Message from Eliyahu’s FamilyBy Netanel Tuito, Eliyahu’s Brother-in-law

In this week’s portion of Beha’alosecha the Torah informs us that while in the desert the Jews encamped and traveled at G-d’s bidding – when to travel, where to travel, and how long to encamp at any given location.

There were times that the Jewish people would abide for long periods of time in pleasant locations, where water was plentiful, while at other times they would sojourn for long periods of time in unpleasant locations, where water was scarce. The Jews were powerless to make their own decisions as to when and where to travel and where to stop; it was all according to G-d’s com-mand.

The events that transpired with our forefathers are signs for their children. Every Jew has his own individ-ual pathway and road that G-d chooses for him through-out his entire life. At times he must scale great heights; other times the road is flat and smooth; at times he is blessed with an abundance of physical plentitude, while at other times he has great difficulty making a living. A

Jew believes that all events are directed by G-d’s hand.

I want to share with you a bit of the life and times of our dear brother and brother-in-law, Eliyahu, of bless-ed memory. Eliyahu was a talented lad. Beloved by all; always joyful and causing others to rejoice as well, con-stantly creating a joyful ambiance.

He was extremely kindhearted, always lending a help-ing hand to people; the first to offer assistance to others.

Like all Jews, he experienced good and pleasant peri-ods during his life, similar to the Jews’ encamping near wellsprings of fresh water, while at other times he had to struggle to climb and traverse steep mountains, or encamp in locations bereft of any assistance.

Even during the most difficult periods of his life, he was always filled with hope that events would take a turn for the better and he would yet enjoy good and happy times.

Indeed, Eliyahu finally achieved this period in life, and thank G-d, married.

During this period of time G-d sent Eliyahu the good

Page 6: Journal Addendum

angels Dr. Walder and his dear wife Shira Malka, who infused him with much faith and confidence in his new ascendant path.

It was in their merit that Eliyahu was able to fulfill his dream and begin studying law, and for the first time in his life was able to be truly proud of his achievements.

He would tell all his friends and acquaintances, “I have a father and a mother to whom I have pledged to complete my studies and become a lawyer.” To our great chagrin, he did not merit to conclude his studies, for he sadly suddenly took ill and passed away.

Nevertheless, Eliyahu serves as a paradigm of how it is possible for a person to raise himself from the lowest of depths to the greatest heights, never to give up and never to lose hope.

My wife and I have arrived from distant Israel, not only to cherish Eliyahu’s memory,

But also, and primarily, to thank dear Dr. Walder and Shira Malka for their unique and most personal sup-port that they extend to each and every child and young

Page 7: Journal Addendum

person. They literally delve into each and every detail as to what is best for this child to study, what is the best means of employment for this individual, what is the best place for this particular person to live.

And most important of all: What hidden talent and aptitude lies dormant and latent in you, that you will be able to actualize.

It is wholly to their credit that Eliyahu’s sisters have undergone a transformative change in their degree of togetherness, and in their ability to hear out and under-stand one another.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Eliyahu is partaking in this special and moving event – the establishment of a Yeshivah named after him; a Chabad Yeshivah, the Chassidic movement that Eliyahu so loved and admired. Eliyahu sends his heartfelt thanks.

The Rebbe quotes the verse "Educate a child according to his way; even when he becomes older, he will not depart

from it." He therefore concludes that "we must work towards these goals, 'raising up many students,' who will, in turn, themselves attract other students and

thus, reveal, in an apparent way, how each Jew is, 'the work of My hands in which to take pride."

Tonight's award recipients, Dr. Yosef and Shira Malka Walder, Rabbi Shalom and Chana Bergovoy, represent the dedication and Torah-living of all the educators and

others who have given themselves, not only to bring about the success of tonight's simcha, but to help shape

the words of the Rebbe into a reality that not only enriches the lives of the young men and women who

have, and will continue to grow and flourish as a result of their efforts, but will influence others in the same way

so as to change the world the way G-d wants it to be.

We join in saluting the entire dedicated leadership of Mesivta Lubavitch Chicago

and congratulate them for another wonderful year, one of real development and taking things to the next level

in such a big way, begashmius uveruchnius.

Mazel Tov to the singular patrons of Torah and yiddishkeit Dr. Yosef and Shira Malka Walder

on your enabling the Mesivta to see the implementation of its dreams and reach for even greater.

Last week (Bamidbar, 3:1) the Torah tells us via Rashi that "Any who teaches the child of another is considered as if he

birthed him" The Rebbe elucidates that unlike a physical father, of which

there can be only one, spiritual birth (life) through Torah is a continual process

without which one cannot survive, hence "Any" and even many who provide it can gain this merit

with the same person.

The Rebbe also teaches that the greatest sign of life is growth. L'chaim to the growth and life of the Mesivta. We appreciate what you are doing and thank you

for our son's three wonderful years in your beautiful moised.
