Reflection – Professional Value
The final segment of my internship entailed much more research than the first two parts.
Additionally, I made several more trips to Capitol Hill and dipped more into the public affairs
side of Qorvis/MSLGROUP, whose clients include Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Fiji, Cyprus and
Bahrain. This was actually a great insight into my own professional preferences, as I definitely
didn’t enjoy the public affairs aspect of my job nearly as much as I liked my public relations-
related duties. I was entrusted with much more important research, too, and with creating media
lists for larger and more prominent clients. However, it makes a huge difference in my own
marketability to say that I have been involved in both public affairs and public relations, as well
as hybrid practices.
Reflection – Personal Value
Wrapping up my internship at Qorvis was definitely bittersweet. I made a lot of great
connections at this company and learned so much about the agency lifestyle and its high
demands. I definitely feel more prepared to work in an agency in the future, and working in this
environment has only motivated me to work harder to make myself more marketable and to earn
a position in an agency like Qorvis. I was definitely able to at least mostly fulfill the goals I had
set forth for this internship, as well as meet other benchmarks important in my public relations
experience and education.
Major Connection
One public relations theory that I thought was especially apt to apply to the final part of my
Qorvis/MSLGROUP internship is Grunig’s excellence theory. The excellence theory “specifies
how public relations makes organizations more effective, how it is organized and managed when
it contributes most to organizational effectiveness, the conditions in organizations and their
environments that make organizations more effective, and how the monetary value of public
relations can be determined.” This theory definitely champions the function of public relations
and it was very clear to me how critical public relations is after working for this particular
company.
