Foreword However we spell the word – Johrei, Joray, Jyorei, etc. – it means “purifying spirit.” It refers to a particular energy that was channeled through Mokichi Okada (called Meishu-sama, “revered spiritual leader,” by his followers) beginning in the 1930s – the energy, and the healing method through which the energy is applied.
According to Gary Westergren (of www.orientaloutpost.com), the spelling
“should be Romanized as Jourei in the official form of Japanese Romaji” – so, that’s the generic spelling I’ve chosen to use here. My first direct experience of Jourei – the energy and the method – came in the year 2000, via Johrei Fellowship (which is the North American branch of Sekai Kyusei Kyo, the Church of World Messianity).
Sekai Kyusei Kyo was officially founded by Meishu-sama in 1950 – though it was
really the culmination of several previous Okada organizations, dating from 1935: Dai-Nihon Kannon-kai (Great Japan Kannon Society), Dai-Nihon Kenka Kyakai (Great Japan Health Society), Nihon Kannon Kyodan (Japan Kannon Sect), and Nihon Miroku Kyokai (Japan Miroku Church; Miroku referring to Maitreya, the Buddha or Messiah of the future). In fact, even the name Sekai Kyusei Kyo was first given as Sekai Messhiya Kyo.
As if all these names were not confusing enough, other Jourei organizations began
sprouting up and splintering off … and spelling Jourei in various ways (Johrei, Joray, Jyorei, etc.). We can sweep away the apparent confusion, however – because the energy used in all these variations is the same “purifying spirit” energy that was channeled via Meishu-sama through the Bodhisattva Kannon (a.k.a. Kwan Yin, Kuan Yin, Qwan Yin, Quan Yin).
My Jourei Path Six years after becoming a member of Johrei Fellowship, I encountered Quan Yin
Joray – in the person of Nivra Kelley, who then authorized me to initiate others into it. I

didn’t begin initiating others until four years later (2010) because it took me that long to feel that I had enough understanding of what Jourei really is, where it comes from, how it works … and how it is similar to and different from Reiki (which I’ve been practicing since 1991 and teaching since 1999).
I was led to most of that understanding by Rev. Michael Daniel Neary, a fellow
Reiki teacher, who is also a Jourei minister and member of several Jourei organizations. Because I have learned from these various Jourei schools, my understanding and my handling of Jourei is not strictly in accord with the version presented by any one of them. The foundation and the majority of my Jourei experience and understanding has indeed come through a single source: Rev. Henry Ajiki of the Tucson (Arizona) Johrei Center.
Rev. Henry Ajiki: a human treasure Rev. Henry Ajiki was one of two people chosen in 1953 to bring Jourei from Japan to America. He and Rev. Kiyoko Higuchi established a Johrei Center in Honolulu, then in Los Angeles, and then Henry started a Center in Tucson. It was through Henry and the Tucson Center that I became a member of Johrei Fellowship, in 2000. At this writing (July 2010) Henry is now officially retired from ministerial duties, but is still at the Tucson Center and very much involved with Johrei activities. I feel enormously blessed to have received the energy of Jourei and the teachings of Johrei Fellowship through Henry Ajiki, who was initiated and taught by Meishu-sama himself. The Fergusons and Quan Yin Joray Most of the material I received on Quan Yin Joray also came through Henry – because the founders of Quan Yin Joray, Rick and Emma Ferguson, were previously students of Henry, at the Tucson Johrei Center. In some ways, the Fergusons patterned Quan Yin Joray on Reiki – with official levels of training, a certificate given at each level, and giving “Attunements” instead of Focal Points.* ________________________________________________________________________
* See page 10 for more about Focal Points. ________________________________________________________________________ My Version of Jourei I would have been quite happy just to continue teaching Reiki – except that eventually I got tired of being asked by people, “How can I learn to give Jourei? How can I become a member of Johrei Fellowship?” I got tired of telling them, “You can’t – because the only way is to go to a Johrei Center ... and there’s no Johrei Center within ten thousand miles of you!” Then I encountered Quan Yin Joray and was given authorization

7
to teach it – but I didn’t feel right about doing that. I continued to learn from various schools of Jourei, through my friend Michael Neary in New York. For quite a while, I referred Jourei seekers to him – because he offered distant initiation and training. Then one day everything clicked into place for me, and I knew I was ready to initiate and teach people myself. Having collected information from several Jourei organizations, I was able to piece together a more complete understanding of Jourei than any of them seemed to have. Also, my years of teaching Reiki gave me insights into Jourei, and I was fascinated by the similarities and differences I discovered between the two. The very best way to really learn something, of course, is to teach it to others – and so I’m very happy to have finally decided to teach Jourei. I’m even beginning to wonder if Meishu-sama was right in believing that the nature of Jourei energy makes it uniquely suited for purifying us enough to survive the great cosmic changes that are coming to us every day now! I teach only the giving of Jourei energy, not the art of flower arrangement and not Nature Farming. My goal is to offer a strong connection to, and a good understanding of, Jourei energy – freed of all religious trappings and restrictions. In my version of Jourei, I give both a Focal Point and an energetic empowerment (called Reiju – “giving spirit”). Also, a Practitioner certificate and a Teacher certificate. Because of the time involved in teaching and initiating people, I can only afford to do it by charging a fee. There is no fee for receiving Jourei energy, though. I ask that you give Jourei without requesting anything in return. A typical Jourei session takes only 15-20 minutes – and the “giver” benefits from the energy as much as the “receiver” does. If someone offers a donation in gratitude for receiving Jourei, you may accept it, but please don’t request it. Part of our purification/ healing/growth comes from giving service to others without asking anything in return.

What is Jourei?
• A Japanese word, the simplest translation of which is “purifying spirit”. . . .
• A combination of Fire and Water (Sun and Moon) energies, thought to be
channeled through the Bodhisattva Kannon (a.k.a. Kwan Yin, Kuan Yin, Qwan
Yin, Quan Yin). . . .
• A healing method using this composite energy, which can be directed anywhere
in space and time. . . .
• A lifelong Way of spiritual awakening, Self-realization (and of which the healing
effects are secondary and automatic), which also includes the appreciation of
natural beauty, the making of artworks ... and a spiritual approach to the growing
of food, known as Nature Farming.
Meishu-sama and the development of Jourei Mokichi Okada was a Japanese businessman and artist in Tokyo. He was an
atheist/materialist until, after experiencing a series of personal calamities, he joined the
Omoto Kyo religion in 1920. Three years later came the Great Kanto Earthquake* – after
which Okada became much more involved in Omoto Kyo and deeply interested in
learning about the spiritual world. “I realized that human beings enjoy the protection of
spiritual and divine beings,” he later wrote, “and that if one does not know about the
existence of spirits, one is empty as a human being.”
________________________________________________________________________
* At this time Mikao Usui was teaching his “method for achieving personal perfection” in Tokyo, and became renowned for his healing abilities in the days and weeks after the earthquake. ________________________________________________________________________
Mysterious happenings with Bodhisattva Kannon
In the following years, Okada became inextricably associated with the
Bodhisattva Kannon. Several people reported seeing the spirit of Kannon around Okada

9
on various occasions, and a small, ghostly image of Kannon appeared mysteriously in a
1934 photo, in the air above Okada’s head.
Chinkon kishin was a spiritual practice taught for a time in Omoto Kyo, and
Okada used it to invoke the spirit of Kannon. “In my abdomen there is a sphere of light,”
he wrote. “This is the spirit of one of the highest of the divine beings.” And, “Using me
as its instrument, it orders me to help each and every living creature.” Through the
practice of chinkon kishin, he received knowledge and abilities that allowed him to bring
about great healings; in many cases, of things that were thought to be incurable.*
________________________________________________________________________
* Chinkon kishin was actually the combination of two practices, borrowed from ancient Shinto by Onisaburo Deguchi, one of Omoto's founders. Though it brought beneficial results for Mokichi Okada, that was not the case for all members. In fact, the practice of kishin proved quite dangerous for some, who became possessed by undesirable entities – and the practice of chinkon kishin was eventually prohibited within Omoto Kyo. See this page for more details. ________________________________________________________________________
Okada became so busy with this healing work that, in 1928, he “retired from
active participation” in his business, Okada Enterprises. By this time he was also
realizing that his own spiritual growth was taking him beyond the boundaries of Omoto
Kyo – though he did not resign from Omoto until 1934. Shortly before that, he refined
his chinkon method of healing and began calling it Okada-Style Spiritual Finger-
Pressure Therapy (which conjures up a very different image than the way in which Jourei
is given today). The term “Jourei” was not used until much later, 1947.
Meishu-sama
From the 1920s through World War II, the
Japanese government acted relentlessly against new
religions and spiritual organizations. Many spiritual
leaders, including Mokichi Okada, were jailed and even
tortured at various times. In 1934, Okada started a
group in Tokyo called Oshindo. Then, on his birthday
(December 23) that year, he held a “provisional

inauguration” of the Great Japan Kannon Society (Dai Nihon Kannon Kai), at which he
was designated “spiritual leader” (the Japanese word is Meishu, and his followers have
called him Meishu-sama ever since).*
________________________________________________________________________
* In the same way that “-san” is attached to Japanese names as a term of endearment, “-sama” is a term of reverence. ________________________________________________________________________
The official inauguration of the Kannon Society followed on January 1, 1935.
This was shut down by the government the following year, and Okada started the Great
Japan Health Society (Dai Nihon Kenka Kyakai). When that was also shut down, Okada
continued to work and to accumulate followers but with no official organization. After
World War II, the government persecution ended and Meishu-sama formed the Church of
World Messianity (Sekai Kyusei Kyo, literally “World Salvation Sect”), which began
with 100,000 members. It continues under that name today (also known, in the U.S.A.,
as Johrei Fellowship).

Okada, The Light from the East (MOA Productions, 1986), and from “Reminiscences of Religion in Postwar Japan” (on the Nanzan University website).

Jourei is a “channeled” energy. It comes to us through the Bodhisattva Kannon,
via Meishu-sama. It works by “burning away spiritual clouds” – removing impurities
from the spiritual body. The energy of Jourei is a composite of Fire and Water (Sun and
Moon) energies. Meishu-sama channeled this energy from Kannon, and passed it on to
his followers by means of a “Sacred Focal Point” (Ohikari) – a calligraphy of the
Japanese character for “light,” enclosed in a cloth bag, worn under the clothing, near the
heart.* This energy combines with Earth energy in the human body; and these Fire,
Water, and Earth energies bring about purification and healing. (See the article by
Meishu-sama, starting on page 34, for a detailed explanation of this.)

was used. Then, for some time, there were 3 “levels” of Ohikari – Dai Ko Myo, Ko Myo (“Bright Light”), and Ko (“Light”). Nowadays, in Johrei Fellowship, only the calligraphy of Ko is used.

Sekai Kyusei Kyo – Church of World Messianity
Why the name “Church of World Messianity”? Did Mokichi Okada believe
himself to be a Messiah? In the true sense of the word – messiah meaning “anointed” –
yes. “I must indeed have been born with a miraculous destiny,” he wrote. He believed
that his understanding of illness and how to heal it was unprecedented ... and that “the
greatest quality of a savior is to be endowed with an absolute method for perfecting
human health....”
“Though I am not fond of calling myself the savior,” he wrote, “I must confess
that I cannot definitely deny that I am. The appearance of a savior is of unprecedented
importance in the history of humankind and ... one must believe that it will take place
sooner or later, since the sages of the ancient past have prophesied it in such various
forms as the coming of the Messiah, the Second Coming of Christ, and the birth into the
world of the Bodhisattva Maitreya....”
The messianic role extended, in fact, to every member of the Church – through
the giving of Jourei. Meishu-sama foresaw the world undergoing a purification by Fire,
and believed that the purifying energy of Jourei was the only thing that would allow us to
survive it.
[As I write this in 2010, it seems clear that the world is indeed entering a purification by Fire – and equally clear that no external messiah will be appearing to save us. We must each be our own messiah. Likewise, there is no single method or technique, discipline or belief system, that we must use. There are countless roads we can travel, and they all take us where we need to go – to Self-realization.]

Paradise on Earth
Meishu-sama had a vision of what he called “Paradise on Earth.” It was based on
3 main elements: (1) spiritual purification through the giving and receiving of Jourei; (2)
purification of the Earth, and the growing of food crops, through Nature Farming (a way
of agriculture that uses no pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers, not even compost); and (3)
the appreciation and creation of beauty, through observing and enjoying Nature, and
making works of art.
Okada saw the #1 enemy of humanity as illness. Burdened by illness, a person
could not work – which led to poverty. And poverty led to conflict with others.
Therefore, his top priority was the healing of illness and the maintenance of health,
primarily through the giving and receiving of Jourei.
Before the end of World War II, Okada purchased land in Hakone, and began
transforming it into “Sacred Grounds” – a prototype of what he envisioned as “Paradise
on Earth ... a world of complete truth, virtue and beauty.” This was followed by another
prototype at Atami, and a third at Kyoto. The Sacred Grounds at Hakone represented the
energy of Fire; Atami represented Water; and Kyoto represented Earth.
The Fundamentals of Meishu-sama’s Teaching Mokichi Okada left volumes and volumes of writings on many subjects. Only a
small part of them has been translated from the Japanese. There are various Jourei
organizations, and different ones have acquired different parts of Meishu-sama’s
writings. And the Okada family have kept great amounts of information secret from
everyone. Still, the fundamentals of what Meishu-sama taught are well known.
The Cause of Disease
Meishu-sama taught that disease (and every other kind of suffering) arises when
we are not living in accordance with cosmic law. The source of such discord is not only
our present lifetime, but all previous lifetimes and all discord we have inherited from
ancestors. Our way of living has created “clouds” (impurities) in our spiritual body.

13
These spiritual clouds manifest in the physical body as disease – and Jourei returns us to
health by dissolving or burning-away the spiritual clouds.
The primary understanding in Jourei is that “the spiritual precedes the physical.”
Everything arises first in spirit, and then is manifested physically. Meishu-sama
described spirit as “the primary component and the very substance of all matter.”
Pasteur and the Germ Theory
We all know the story of Louis Pasteur and his Germ Theory – which has been
endlessly trumpeted by mainstream Science and Medicine. It's the very bedrock of the
mega-billion-dollar pharmaceutical industry, and every schoolchild is religiously
indoctrinated with it. But, parts of the story always seem to be missing from the
mainstream version:
Two of Pasteur's peers – Antoine Béchamp and Claude Bernard – repudiated his
assertion that germs were the cause of disease. Bernard made the famous statement "The
terrain is everything; the germ is nothing" – in other words, germs do not harm a healthy
body – and, to demonstrate, he drank a glass of water teeming with cholera and suffered
no harm. Béchamp (whose scientific credentials dwarfed Pasteur's) agreed with Bernard.
And Pasteur himself, on his deathbed, admitted that Bernard had been right ... though this
part of the story is what gets scrubbed from the history books and medical schools.
Pasteur had instructed his family never to release his laboratory notes; however,
they were released, almost a century after his death, and they showed that some of his
experiments did not even demonstrate what he had claimed at the time.
[For more on this topic, you might like this article about Pasteur, and/or this one, The
Lost History of Medicine, and/or this one, Béchamp & Pasteur – Clash & Consequence.]
Meishu-sama went even a step further than Béchamp and Bernard – to say not
only that bacteria do not cause disease, but they are the result of disease, and also part of
the healing process. That our spiritual clouds create disease, which manifests as physical
toxins in the body – and bacteria then arise, in order to eat the toxins. This kills the
bacteria, and they and the toxins are then excreted from the body. These excretions are
what we recognize as symptoms of illness – though we can say, more accurately, they are
symptoms of healing!

14
In several of his writings, Okada discussed the following: • Bacteria are "the result of disease, not its cause" • "It is human beings themselves that create bacteria" • "Spontaneous generation of bacteria" (from viruses)
The Process of Purification and Healing
The giving and receiving of Jourei energy allows us to dissolve our spiritual
clouds much faster and more effectively than we can do through such things as
meditation and good thoughts and deeds alone. The divine light of Jourei, channeled
through the Bodhisattva Kannon, burns away clouds in the spiritual body and raises its
vibration. This manifests in the physical body as the dissolution and excretion of toxins.
Heat is created in the body, dissolving the toxins, which can then be removed through the
body’s channels of elimination. This elimination process gives rise to our symptoms of
disease – which, as mentioned already, are really symptoms of healing.
Three Sources of Spiritual Clouds
Meishu-sama taught that our spiritual clouds come from three sources:
⎯ The present lifetime (caused by our improper thoughts and feelings,
words and deeds; by contaminated foods and medicinal toxins; and by the
pollution of soil, air, and water)
⎯ Previous lifetimes (residual clouds, not completely dissolved in the spirit
world between lifetimes, because of our premature reincarnation)
⎯ Ancestors (inherited clouds)
Our spiritual clouds are related not only to physical and mental health, but to all
aspects of our lives – including financial, emotional, personal relationships, etc. And the
nature of the spiritual clouds will be reflected in the nature of our purification.
Meishu-sama said that 30% - 50% of our spiritual clouds can be dissolved by
receiving Jourei, and the remaining 50% - 70% by our service to others. Also that, in
addition to working directly on the spiritual level with Jourei, we purify ourselves

15
mentally and emotionally through the appreciation of art and Nature, and physically
through eating wholesome, naturally grown foods.
Viruses and Bacteria
Like everything else, viruses and bacteria originate in the spiritual dimension. At
some point, according to Meishu-sama, a spiritual cloud becomes dense enough to
precipitate inorganic matter ... which then becomes organic matter, in the form of a virus.
Then viruses transform into bacteria. This was also discovered by Béchamp, before the
word virus was coined. Béchamp called them “prebacterial particles” or “microzymes.”
He said they were the very origin of life, and that their form depended on the health
condition of the host organism.
The Law of Purification
Every living thing in our world generates waste products, which must be removed
or purified if healthy functioning is to continue. This is a fundamental cosmic law – and
this purification proceeds in two stages. The first stage includes normal, daily
eliminations through kidneys, bladder, sweat glands, etc. It also includes the movement
of toxins to other areas of the body – mostly nerve centers – which we are normally not
aware of. There the toxins accumulate and harden, until the body is ready for the second
stage of purification.
When our vitality is high enough, the second stage begins; that is, the dissolving
and removal of these accumulated toxins. The body dissolves them by creating a fever,
and then removes them however it can. This is the point we generally call “sickness” –
though, understanding what is really happening, we can see it as “healing.” We can be
very grateful for it, even though it’s unpleasant.
In Cellular Awakening: How your body holds and creates light,* Barbara Wren
describes a hierarchy of bodily organs in the purification process, which can be helpful to
know. The first organ of purification is the skin, she says. If there are too many toxins
for the skin to eliminate, or if elimination is blocked there, the next organ of purification
________________________________________________________________________

16
is the colon. If that is blocked, the next organ is the liver ... then the kidneys and lungs ...
then the heart and brain. We can see that, at each step, this hierarchy moves deeper
inside the body and higher.
Some especially damaging toxins, which most of us greatly underestimate, are
emotional toxins. We create these every time we feel angry or fearful, depressed, worried,
lonely, frustrated, resentful – anytime we are not at peace in ourselves.
Blocking Purification
Meishu-sama wrote vehemently against the medical approach to disease – that is,
the suppression of symptoms, which blocks the purification process. He wrote
specifically about antibiotic drugs – which kill bacteria (the agents of purification), and
stop the transformation from viruses to bacteria, thereby stopping the whole purification
process. In addition to that, he said, the drugs add their own toxins to the body; toxins
that weaken the immune system, increase allergies, and are themselves very difficult to
remove.
Since then, of course, the pharmaceutical industry has mushroomed exponentially.
Antibiotics have grown ever stronger, and tens of thousands of other drugs have joined
them – all of which work by suppressing symptoms, because their creators mis-
understand the entire process of disease and healing.
The purification process can also be suppressed by the taking of so-called
nutritional supplements (mineral, vitamin, protein, etc.) – which are quite unnatural and
confusing to the body (despite advertising claims to the contrary).
Anything that blocks the natural purification process creates an increase of toxins
in the body, which leads to chronic and degenerative disease, mental depression, and
fatigue.

Vital Points for Giving and Receiving Jourei Energy
Feelings of pain or stiffness or fever anywhere in the body are indications of
toxins there. In places where fever is felt, the toxins are dissolving already. If these
places are on the back of the body, the application of Jourei will facilitate and speed the
purification (because the natural movement of energy through the body is from back to
front; it comes in the back and goes out the front). If fever is felt on the front, giving
Jourei there is probably “too much of a good thing” – likely to irritate the body more than
help it. We can help by giving Jourei at those locations only from the back. In places of
pain or stiffness, without fever – front or back – the toxins may not have started
dissolving yet, and Jourei may be applied beneficially to dissolve them (still, in some
cases, it may be preferable to give very little or no Jourei in the front, at these spots).
Sometimes, when people are sufficiently ill, they may feel no pain or stiffness or
fever – in which case the toxins have become solidified so much that no purification is
occurring. In these cases Jourei is beneficially applied to both front and back, and
frequent treatments will eventually dissolve and remove the toxins.
Most of us, most of the time, are not aware of symptoms of illness, even though
the process of purification is going on. Receiving Jourei frequently is an excellent way to
accelerate purification, to improve our health and advance our spiritual awakening. For
general purposes, a series of “vital points” has been identified, and giving Jourei at these
points constitutes a sort of “standard” treatment. Below is information about these
important areas of the body.
The Head
We give Jourei first to the forehead, for approximately one minute. This area
includes the brow chakra. We then give Jourei to the crown for one minute. This, of
course, includes the crown chakra. If we draw a line vertically through the crown chakra,
and a line horizontally through the brow chakra – following the energy flow through
these chakras – we see that the place of intersection is at the pineal gland, in the very
center of the brain. (The pineal gland, so named because it is shaped like a pine cone, is
the “master gland” controlling all other glands in the body.)
Copyright © 2010 Don Beckett http://johreiki.net
18
The frontal part of the brain is used for intellectual functions; the back part is
activated when we feel emotions such as excitement, anger, or sadness. When we worry,
intellect and emotion are both involved, causing toxins to accumulate in the interior of
the crown.
The Hindbrain
The hindbrain is the back part of the brain adjacent to where the spinal column
enters the skull. It controls autonomic functions and equilibrium. It is a gathering place
for toxins from the upper half of the body, and a “gateway” for toxins entering the head.
Eyes:
All illnesses of the eyes involve hardened toxin in the eyes. The toxin creates
pressure on blood vessels, impeding circulation to the eyes. This causes myopia,
astigmatism, or other distortions of vision. Toxin accumulating on the back of the eyes
causes glaucoma, cataracts, weakness or loss of vision.
Ears:
The hindbrain is the main vital point associated with ringing in the ears. The
parotid gland area, on either side of the head, is another vital point for this. The parotids
are the largest of the salivary glands, located just under and in front of each ear.
Nose:
Toxin flows through the hindbrain to the forehead, then to both sides of the nose,
where it accumulates, causing sinusitis. For this condition, Jourei can be given to the
sinuses, in front, though mostly to the hindbrain and the nape of the neck.
Insomnia and Dizziness:
These result from hardened toxin in the hindbrain compressing blood vessels.
Cerebral Hemorrhage:
This is caused by sudden liquefaction of a large quantity of hardened toxin in the
hindbrain. If the toxin is kept from accumulating so much, it can flow back down and be
eliminated in the form of bloody feces or hemorrhoids.
Copyright © 2010 Don Beckett http://johreiki.net
19
The Neck
Toxins in the neck area are associated with the following:
Tonsillitis:
When the neck area purifies, toxin gathers in the tonsils.
Headache in the Forehead:
caused by the dissolving of toxin in the cervical lymph nodes and parotid glands.
Anemia:
caused by a large amount of toxin accumulated in the neck area.
Arms and Lungs:
Toxin dissolving from the neck and flowing down into the arms may cause illness
in the hands and arms. If it goes into the lungs, it may result in tuberculosis, pleurisy, or
intercostal neuralgia.
Shortness of Breath:
caused by toxin from the neck flowing down to and surrounding the chest and
diaphragm, and solidifying there.
The Shoulders
The shoulders are major vital points for giving Jourei. The primary cause of
tuberculosis is toxin in the shoulders and upper back area. This toxin is expelled by the
lungs, in the form of phlegm.
Stiffness in the left shoulder may indicate a developing heart condition – in which
toxin eventually descends to the heart and solidifies, compressing the heart muscle. In a
similar way, toxin descending and accumulating in the diaphragm area may cause
asthma. And receiving Jourei on the shoulders is also important in cases of stomach
illness.

20
The heart, lungs, and stomach are important and interrelated organs. By giving
Jourei to the shoulders, the heart and lungs will improve. And, because of their
relationship with the stomach, it will also function better and the appetite will improve.
Toxin in the shoulders also affects the liver, kidneys, and blood sugar. And, if it
accumulates sufficiently, it can ascend to the cervical lymph nodes and the hindbrain.
The shoulders are the most important vital points for giving Jourei in the upper
half of the body. Their condition is a good indicator of one’s fundamental vitality. If the
shoulders are soft and flexible, the person can recover easily even from a serious illness.
On the contrary, if the shoulders are stiff, a mild illness can become severe. It’s
important to receive Jourei on the shoulders daily – from the front, the top, and the back.
It helps very much to keep us healthy, and it accelerates the recovery process in many
illnesses.
The Kidneys
Kidney function includes the secretion of two hormones (Erythropoietin and
Calcitriol) and an enzyme (renin), as well as the removal of uric acid from the blood.
They cannot dispose of foreign substances, however, without undergoing the process of
purification. Therefore, various toxins naturally accumulate in the kidneys.
These toxins affect the kidneys’ ability to eliminate uric acid – which leads to
accumulation of uric toxins. These move upward, on both sides of the spinal column, to
the shoulders – where they become a source of illness for the heart, lungs, and stomach.
The toxins may ascend even further – to the cervical lymph nodes, to the head, eyes, ears
and nose, creating illness in those areas. They may also accumulate in the gums, causing
pyorrhea.
In some cases these toxins may flow downward, into the abdominal area, causing
peritonitis, appendicitis, or gynecological disorders. They may descend even into the
legs, causing heaviness or edema. A large surplus of uric fluid in the body even creates
an overweight condition!
In the extreme condition of renal atrophy, the loss of vitality is so great, the
kidneys are not able to produce their hormones and enzyme. Kidney disorders are
related to many illnesses. The kidneys are the most important vital points in the body.

The Back
At the very top of the back (base of the neck), at the place of the 5th Cervical
vertebra, is the throat chakra. The traditional Jourei treatment doesn’t mention chakras
by name, but it treats all the major ones except throat and heart – and I like to include
those too.
Instead of the heart chakra, the traditional Jourei treatment treats the area of the
physical heart – slightly above the back of the stomach and between the spinal column
and left shoulder blade – and emphasizes giving Jourei to this area in cases of
hemorrhage, electric shock, or drowning. By doing so, it’s believed, the person receives a
“spiritual transfusion of blood.” This area is also related to illnesses of the stomach, the
lungs, and the head.
The area behind the stomach – the solar plexus – is a major spot for the
accumulation of medicinal toxins. It is the main vital point for stomach illness, and also
related to liver illness, asthma, and diabetes. When purification begins, toxins flow into
the stomach, causing pain.
The Front
Though most vital points for Jourei are on the back, and Jourei is typically given
for twice as long on the back as on the front, there are some very important vital points in
the front of the body.
Pit of the Stomach:
This is the solar plexus chakra. Jourei is given here and on the left side for
stomach illness – and on the right side for liver problems, jaundice, or gallstones. Giving
Jourei to the diaphragm will help eliminate phlegm in cases of asthma.
Abdominal Area:
This is the lunar plexus or sacral chakra. Purification in this area usually takes the
form of phlegm or diarrhea, or leucorrhea in the case of gynecological problems. In case
of constipation, the toxin comes from the back and accumulates in the lower abdomen.

22
This is often treated by giving Jourei first in the back, around the kidneys and sacrum,
and then to the front.
The Groin Area
This is where the legs join the body. Jourei given here is directed to the string of
lymph nodes on either side. When toxins from this area dissolve, they can surface as
boils on the legs or buttocks. This area is also a vital point for hemorrhoids, as the toxins
can flow into the rectum.
The Genital Organ Area
The upper and lower halves of the human body have a heaven and earth
relationship. The forehead and genitals are heaven and earth facing each other. There-
fore, sexually related illnesses have a relationship with the forehead.
I was taught to treat the genital area by beaming Jourei upward, from below the
root chakra, as the recipient was seated on a chair. You may feel comfortable doing this
with some people, but I never have – and I don’t recommend it. I think it would feel in-
vasive to many people. What I do instead is to hold my hand, palm upward, behind the
back of the recipient, and feel or imagine that I’m giving Jourei from below the root
chakra. This accomplishes exactly that, without making the person feel uneasy. Even
better, I think (though in Johrei Fellowship I was taught never to use both hands at once),
is to hold one hand palm upward and the other palm downward – the two facing each
other, with maybe two feet of space between them – and then to bring the lower hand
slowly up, feeling the energy between the palms, with the intent and imagination of
clearing the central channel in the recipient’s body, from root to crown.
This makes a nice ending to the session – sort of “closing the circle” that was
opened in the beginning by beaming Jourei downward through the crown chakra. At the
end, we can bring the hands together in this way, and then immediately into gassho
(prayer) position for the ending affirmation (see description on page 32).

We’re told NOT to give Jourei to the root chakra in cases of pregnancy,
because doing so may cause a miscarriage. I don’t know that this is actually true, and it
seems a little doubtful to me – but I’m not going to risk finding out! Better safe than
sorry!
A Typical Jourei Session
As mentioned already, if there are signs of active purification (fever, pain,
excretions, for example) on the front of the body, Jourei is not usually applied at those
locations. Without signs of purification, the standard procedure is to give Jourei half as
long on the front as on the back. This is because the natural direction of energy
movement in the body is from back to front. (Another way to say this is that the back
represents the spiritual dimension, the front represents the physical – and, as we know,
the spiritual always precedes the physical.)
Following is my “standard” sequence of locations for giving Jourei (subject to
modification in every case, of course : ^ ):
F R O N T —
(30 seconds each – except for *)
1) forehead / brow chakra* (60 seconds)
2) crown chakra* (60 seconds)
3) front of left shoulder
4) front of right shoulder
5) throat chakra
6) heart chakra (and/or location of physical heart)
7) solar plexus chakra (stomach)
8) navel
9) sacral chakra (lunar plexus)
10) left side of groin (lymph nodes)
Copyright © 2010 Don Beckett http://johreiki.net
24
11) right side of groin (lymph nodes)
12) front of left leg
13) front of right leg
(It seems natural to me to sweep the energy down the legs, from groin to foot,
several times.)
B A C K —
(60 seconds each)
1) upper hindbrain / occipital bone
2) lower hindbrain / back of neck
3) top of left shoulder
4) top of right shoulder
5) back of left shoulder
6) back of right shoulder
7) left side of neck (lymph and parotid glands)
8) right side of neck (lymph and parotid glands)
9) throat chakra (at 5th Cervical vertebra)
10) heart chakra (and/or location of physical heart)
11) solar plexus (stomach)
12) navel
13) lunar plexus (sacral chakra)
14) left kidney
15) right kidney
16) root-to-crown movement, “closing the circle” (see description on page 22)
(I do this not necessarily for 60 seconds, just however long it takes the hands to
come together.)
If you follow this list and the suggested time span for each position, the whole
treatment will take a little more than 22-1/2 minutes. You can shorten the times even
more, if you like, and do a good treatment in 15 minutes. Jourei is very concentrated
energy! Remember to spend twice as long on the back as on the front.

If you don’t have time for a full treatment, the following locations are generally
the most important:
⎯ forehead
⎯ crown
⎯ lower abdomen
⎯ hindbrain
⎯ shoulders
⎯ kidneys
The kidneys are THE most important points.

Procedures for Giving Jourei
In person:
Typically, the giver and receiver sit in chairs
facing each other, with a slight space between – as shown
in the photos below. Meishu-sama giving Jourei
Rev. Henry Ajiki giving Jourei
Different Jourei groups have different ways of giving Jourei – various distances
between giver and receiver, for instance, or various positioning of hands and arms. Some
groups insist that Jourei must never be given with both hands at once; others use both
hands at once on some positions (shoulders and sides of neck and kidneys, for instance).
Some insist on beaming the energy, while others include physical contact and even
stroking or massaging (for some points, at least). It’s worth noting that Meishu-sama
27
himself originally used physical contact. He called his method Spiritual Finger-Pressure
Therapy. The reason it was later changed to beaming was to avoid harassment by the
government.
Other ways of giving Jourei
Yes, even to MICE!
The way I was taught, in Johrei Fellowship, was to position the hand by putting
the elbow out to the side somewhat. This brings the hand in front of the body at an angle

of maybe 30-40 degrees from the horizontal. I was taught that the hand should be in a
state of “relaxed attention” and usually in the range of one to three feet from the
recipient.
One hand or two?
As mentioned, some people give Jourei with both hands at once, at least on some
points. Johrei Fellowship teaches not to do this – and I agree, with one exception. Other
than using both hands for the root-to-crown movement (described on page 22), involving
both hands at once in Jourei simply does not feel right to me. More will be said about
this in another manual.
The photos below illustrate positions you may like to use for giving Jourei:
for upper positions for mid-level positions

29
for low-level positions (option 1) for low-level positions (option 2)
The important thing is to be relaxed and comfortable when giving Jourei. If
your muscles are tense, your own energy will be blocked. And, if you’re not at ease – for
any reason – you won’t be fully focused on what you’re doing. So, let your own comfort
be your guide. You can give Jourei to some points while sitting, for instance, and to
other points while standing. (You can give Jourei with no hands at all, in fact – because
the mind is what is really directing the energy anyway : ^ )
I was taught to start each Jourei session with a silent prayer of gratitude ... and the
recipient may do the same, if so inclined.
To keep my hands and arms from getting tired, I switch hands every time I move
to a new Jourei position. For example: I start with the right hand beaming Jourei to the
forehead. I count (mentally) 60 seconds. Then I stand up and put the left hand in
position above the crown, as I remove the right hand from its position. After 60 more
seconds, I move the left hand and sit down again, as the right hand goes into position in
front of the recipient’s left shoulder. And so on . . . . (Standing is natural for doing the
crown and, later, the tops of shoulders and sides of neck.) You can switch from one hand
to the other at any time, even in the midst of giving Jourei to one point.

30
The eyes of the recipient may be closed or open during the treatment. Tradition-
ally, when you finish giving Jourei on the front, the recipient turns his/her chair around,
to receive Jourei on the back. (The recipient turns, not the giver, because the giver is
positioned with his/her back in front of a Jourei scroll (calligraphy) – see photo of Henry
Ajiki, above – so that the divine light emanating from the scroll enters the back of the
giver!)
If the chair has a back, the recipient may prefer to turn the chair only 90 degrees
(instead of 180), in order to sit with nothing between his/her back and the beam of Jourei
energy. However, if the recipient prefers to lean against the back of the chair for support,
the Jourei beam will pass through the back of the chair with no problem.
A Jourei session ends, traditionally, as it started – with giver and receiver both
saying silent prayers of gratitude for the healing that has been received.
Remotely:
Jourei can be given to anyone, anywhere, anytime – not just to someone currently
sharing your space-time coordinates. One method for giving Jourei to someone in a
different place and/or time is to feel or imagine them sitting in front of you, and simply
give Jourei as you normally would ... but with a clear intent that it be perceived by the
recipient at the desired time and place. (If you prefer, you can feel or imagine yourself in
the place and time of the other person, giving Jourei there and then.)
It may be helpful to look at a photo of the person during the session. A proxy
recipient can also be used. This can be a doll, a stuffed toy, a pillow ... another person (in
which case, you’ll be giving Jourei to two people at once – or to a whole list of them, if
that’s your intent).
My way of doing remote Jourei is usually to connect with the recipient (through
imagination and intent) and to visualize the whole session mentally, without using my
hands in the normal way. I hold my hands just in front of me, palms vertical, fingertips
pointing forward – with a little more space between the palms than the width of my body
– and I bring the palms slowly toward each other as I do the treatment. Feeling the
energy between my palms in this way seems to put my whole being in a state of Jourei,
Copyright © 2010 Don Beckett http://johreiki.net
31
making it easy for me to feel the energy going to the chosen recipient, at each vital point.
And almost always, I feel the energy permeating the same points in my own body, as if
someone else were giving Jourei to me.
The purpose of using my hands in this way is just to feel the energy – so it’s not
important how much distance is between them at any time. Moving them just a little
helps me to keep feeling the energy ... and sometimes, when they are getting fairly close
together, I move them apart again and start over from there. At the very end of the
session, for the root-to-crown movement, I put the hands in the vertical position
(described on page 22), as if doing an in-person treatment.
One of my students uses this procedure with a slight variation: Instead of
visualizing the other person in front of him, he uses his own body as a proxy, directing
the Jourei to himself. He uses my technique of palms facing each other, in front of him –
and he raises or lowers them, to more easily feel the energy at different points (holding
them at the level of the heart, for instance, then at the solar plexus, etc.).
You may have your own intuitive way of giving Jourei remotely. If so, please go
with it! Whatever feels most “right” to you will be most effective for you. Your own
intuition is your best pathfinder, not only in Jourei but in Life generally!
To yourself:
You’ll notice right away, it’s not very easy or comfortable to give yourself Jourei
as you would give it to someone else – especially to the positions on the back : ^ ! Even
so, I was not taught an alternative way of giving self-Jourei ... but the following one is
what suggested itself to me:
Merely sit, in a meditative way, and feel or imagine someone giving Jourei to
you! Simple as that. And the someone can be anyone you choose: It can be yourself, or
me, or Meishu-sama, or even Kannon.
When I do this, I use my hands in the same way as for a remote session (see
above) – putting me fully in a state of Jourei, and making the visualization/feeling very
easy for me.

Your Jourei Focal Point
As mentioned earlier, Meishu-sama’s way of passing the Jourei connection to
others was by giving them what he called an Ohikari – a “Sacred Focal Point.” This was
a calligraphy (originally of Dai Ko Myo, “Great Light Sun-and-Moon”) on a sheet of
paper, which was folded and placed inside a cloth bag worn under the clothing, near the
heart.
You will receive such a Focal Point, as well as an energetic Jourei empowerment
(through a procedure called Reiju). Some Jourei groups have many rules regarding the
Focal Point – that it must be worn at every moment (except while bathing or having sex);
that it must be handled in a certain, exact way; that no one else be allowed to touch it –
and, if it is ever dropped or lost, for instance ... well, hmmmmm . . . .
My feeling in this regard is to steer a middle course. Yes, the Focal Point is
sacred – and so is everything else. We need to be attentive and reverent with everything
in our lives. I feel that’s a better approach than putting certain things on a pedestal and
making strict rules about them.
For several years I wore my Focal Point day and night, as I had been instructed.
Then one day I woke up feeling a great urgency to take off the Focal Point! Almost as if
I would smother if I left it on for another second!! So I removed it, and never wore it
again (and was still able to channel Jourei enegy). A couple years later, my friend
Michael Neary (a Jourei Minister) made a Focal Point for me, and I wore that one ... until
I decided to make one for myself. Now I wear the one I made – except when the weather
is too hot for me to wear clothing over it (which is right now, and throughout the summer
in the Arizona desert). When I’m not wearing it, my Focal Point hangs on the wall, in its
own place. I treat it with reverence, but without going to extremes.
My Prayer / Affirmation
I start and end the Jourei session with a prayer or affirmation – a way of stating
my intent and giving thanks for the fulfillment of it. I start by feeling my personal self
dissolving into the one Self – and there I make conscious contact with Kannon, with

Meishu-sama, with my eternal child-self and my present self, and with the desired
recipient of the Jourei session. I feel us altogether, dissolved in total brightness, and I say
mentally: Greatest Awareness ... Healing ... Empowerment ... Realization ... in and
through each of us ... Now, For Ever, All Ways ... through this Jourei (and then I feel the
kototama of “Jourei” – O E I – reverberating through my body).* If I’m doing the
session remotely, I then add: perceived by this dear (name of recipient) in (location of
recipient) this day (22 July 2010, for example) starting at (10:00 p.m., for example).
________________________________________________________________________
* Kototama (literally, “spirit language” or “spirit of the word”) are fundamental, primordial sounds, believed to bring things into manifestation. ________________________________________________________________________
“... In and through each of us ...” – this stipulates that the awareness, healing,
empowerment, realization are filling not just the ostensible recipient, but myself (in
current and childhood forms), Meishu-sama, and Kannon ... and affecting (through us)
everyone we interact with!
Having made this affirmation, I then give thanks for what I have affirmed, and
end by saying (mentally): So it is ... done! At the word “done,” I feel a pinpoint of black-
ness at the center of my heart chakra – as if planting the affirmation there – and then it
explodes into a series of brilliant spheres of light, each one increasingly gigantic, growing
out, out, out, filling all imaginable space, each one echoing So it is ... done! And, indeed,
I feel that the entire Jourei session is done at that very moment. What comes after that, I
feel, is really just “going through the motions.” But they are motions that the recipient
and I have agreed on – so we do them! Going through the motions gives both of us Time
... to receive and accept and real-ize the healing that has already occurred.
At the end of the session, I bring my palms together in gassho (prayer position)
and say, mentally: Dear (name of recipient), bless you, thank you. Greatest Awareness,
Healing, Empowerment, Realization, in and through you, Now, For Ever, All Ways,
through this Jourei – O E I . . . . So it is ... done!
I offer this detailed description of my process only as an example. You can use
it if you like, but the important thing is to come up with a process that feels right for

34
YOU. That’s always the important thing – not any technique that you learn from some-
one else!
Further Reading The following article by Meishu-sama is very helpful in understanding how Jourei actually works:
Johrei and the Three-element Composition of the Internal Organs
Among the internal organs, the function of the heart, lungs, and stomach has the
greatest importance to human life. I shall now explain how they act in terms of the three
fundamental elements of fire, water, and soil.
The heart absorbs the fire element, the lungs the water element, and the stomach
the soil element; the heart corresponds to fire, the lungs to water, and the stomach to soil.
But the way in which medical science has explained this matter has been totally
inadequate. Science has pointed out the way in which oxygen taken into the lungs
purifies the blood, but this alone fails to reach the heart of the matter. I shall now explain
the situation according to the medicine that has been divinely revealed to me, but I must
first begin with an explanation of the true nature of the spiritual world. It is impossible to
understand this true nature without realizing that, though it is imperceptible to the five
human senses, the spiritual world is actually the fundamental source of all things.
The principle that water causes fire to burn and that fire causes water to flow is
the key to the solution of all things. A prerequisite to an understanding of the invisible
spiritual realm is an explanation of the realm of air. Oxygen, familiar through modern
science, is the spirit of fire; hydrogen is the spirit of water; and nitrogen is the spirit of
soil. These three maintain their individual identities but when they are unified they form
the essence from which all things rise. The ineffably mystical action of these three
elements results in a situation in which extremely hot, extremely cold, and temperate
climates are each suited to the needs of the creatures living there. Hypothetically, if all
the water element were removed, the world would explode at once. If all the fire element
were removed, everything would instantaneously freeze. If all the soil element were
Copyright © 2010 Don Beckett http://johreiki.net
35
eliminated, everything would crumble to nothing. This principie should make clear the
basic significance of the function of the heart, lungs, and stomach. In other words, the
heart absorbs the fire element from the spiritual world; its operation is the pulse. In a
similar way, the lungs absorb the water element; their operation is respiration. The
stomach absorbs the soil element from the physical world; its operation is intake of
nutrients.
The liquefaction of the hardened toxins that cause all illnesses demands heat. This
is the first step in the purification process. Interpreted as a pathological symptom, this
heat, which is necessary in large quantities, is fever. At such times, in order to
accommodate this heat, the pulse rate increases greatly. Since heat concentrates in the
affected region, it tends to decrease in other parts of the body, thus bringing about
unpleasant chills. At such times, the lungs absorb large quantities of the water element,
causing the respiration rate to increase, stimulating the activity of the heart, and
preventing dehydration.
The spirit of fire is, of course, emitted by the sun, the spirit of water by the moon,
and the spirit of soil by the earth.
Principal among the three major organs is the heart, which activates the lungs,
which in turn activate the stomach. Though insufficiency of food in the stomach does not
mean immediate danger to life, survival is possible for no more than a few minutes if the
lungs become inoperative and for only seconds when the heart fails. This is clear from the
custom of medicai science of always giving heart failure, not failure of the lungs or
stomach, as the cause of death.
When a person dies, the heart first stops operating. The body then becomes cold
as the spirit, the element of fire which had previously filled it, departs to return to the
spiritual world. Then the lungs cease respiration, and the element of water which had
permeated the body returns to the realm of air, initiating a process of drying up.
Obviously the stomach also stops operating and the impossibility of obtaining drink and
food causes the body to become rigid.
Since the human body is composed of an amalgam of the three elements of fire,
water, and soil, curing illnesses that beset the body is rational only if it relies on the
powers of those three elements. This is the principle of Johrei.

36
Johrei depends on power from the Supreme God, a transmitting of light. It is a
spiritual light, invisible to the human eye, whereas the visible light of the sun, a lamp, or
an electric bulb is the physical manifestation of light. The essence of light is a close union
between the elements of water and fire. The greater the amount of the fire element, the
stronger the light. However, the power of light composed of fire and water is insufficient.
The element of soil is also necessary. Inclusion of the element of soil perfects the union
of the three-in-one, which emits a light with wonderful healing powers. Waves of this
light penetrate the body and eliminate polluting clouds in the spirit. The effect of this
process is transferred to the body in the form of therapeutic effects.
As for the practical means of carrying this out, I write, as I have so often
explained, the character for the word light on a piece of paper, which is then folded and
worn inside the clothing. The spirit of light waves pass through my arm and through the
pen to permeate and condense (though I use the word condense, the process is difficult to
explain). A connection is then established between the character for light and the source
of light within my body by means of spiritual cords along which a supply of light waves
passes ceaselessly. The spiritual link between the Supreme God and myself is similar; an
infinite amount of light waves is transmitted to me for the sake of the salvation of
mankind.
As this explanation should have made clear, a therapeutic method making use of
the power of the three-in-one composition of the human body is true therapy, and as is
only to be expected, such therapy is capable of manifesting unprecedented healing
powers.
