Masthead – The Masthead is a unique style and the font appeals to the target audience of the magazine, teenagers, young adults and the secondary audience middle-age adults. It is behind the main image because font style alone is audience familiarity, so the full logo doesn’t need to be seen to know that the magazines ‘Kerrang’. It is white on a black background making it the dominant contrast, and follows the colour scheme of the magazine. It follows the conventions of a magazine mast head because it covers all the top of the page.

Main image – The Main Image is a picture of Billie Joe Armstrong, this appeals to a wide audience, because Green Day is a very popular band. He has been given a black leather coat, which is a stereotype of a rock star and black symbolises danger and darkness, which is usually what Rock Bands sing about. His face is also the dominant contrast because it’s white on a black background; this matches the colour scheme of the magazine, white, black, yellow and blue. Ideology is also used on this front cover, because he’s every young ‘rockers’ hero, everyone wants to be him.

Model credit – The Model credit is a quote from Billie Joe Armstrong, this quote gives the audience an idea that he isn’t as tough as he is seen by everyone and people can relate to him more because he’s sharing his feelings, “sometimes I feel secluded…” This appeals to a middle-age audience because they want to know about music news. The name Green Day is the dominant contrast because people know him more by his band name than his actual name, which is why underneath his name is smaller.

Coverlines – The cover lines are blue to make it stand out on the black background catching the attention of the audience. It also encourages the consumer to read the magazine by using words like WIN, this shows the audience what the small articles of the magazine are.

Main cover line – The biggest text on the page other than the mast head is the main cover line, the colour and size shows us that it is supposed to be the dominant contrast and that audience is supposed to see it. It is aimed at the teen to young adult audience because of the band, green day is a band more aimed towards the younger audience. Photography Lighting - The lighting is bright on his face to make him the dominant contrast, this is quite conventional when it comes to music magazine covers. The Target audience bought the magazine for the main story, more than the small stories that are scattered around the cover.

House Style – The colours used, white, black, yellow and blue are consistent throughout the front cover, this makes it look professional but the skew of words and headings, plus the fonts used make the magazine informal, which appeals to the audience and the connotations of rock, it is very unlikely to see a rock star dressed very formal.

Target Audience - The target audience of Kerrang is a young teenage audience leading up to an older young adult audience. It is easy to tell because the fonts and other things on the front cover show that it appeals to a younger audience rather than someone retired, plus Kerrang is based more around newer bands.

Design Principles Used? In this music magazine, they do a very good job of following the Guttenberg design principle, with the dominant K and win, being in the top left. The image used also follows the rule of thirds with the main stories being in the main optical area. This is informal balanced
