Introduction

Biographical Information Chester County photographer Joseph H. Thompson was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania in 1914 and died in St Augustine, Florida in 1983. His decades of accomplishments behind the camera include work that allowed him to document the Republican Party campaigns of presidents and local politicians. Although best known for his freelance photography for newspapers, local police, the Republican Party and theatrical personalities, Thompson was also know for his commercial work, portraiture, and wedding photography. Joseph Thompson began his professional career as a photojournalist for the Philadelphia Record and the Philadelphia Inquirer; in addition, he also provided editorial work that appeared in the Daily Local News, Suburban Advertiser, and the Daily Republican. Prior to becoming a freelance photographer, Thompson worked for Shcramm’s in West Chester, Pa. as a commercial photographer. During the 1950’s, Thompson began working with the Republican Party capturing images of their campaigns and closely following the political careers of local and state politicians as well as national political figures. His work with the Republican Party allowed him opportunities to photograph Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower & Richard M. Nixon during their public appearances and campaigns in Chester County. In addition to Republican Party candidates, Thompson also photographed Democrats Robert F. Kennedy & President Lyndon B. Johnson. His work with the Republican Party continued until the 1970’s. As a freelance photographer in the 1960’s, Joseph Thompson had the opportunity to “mingle with the stars1” that came to the area for the Devon Horse Show, the Valley Forge Music Fair, and other events. Some of the celebrities he had the opportunity to photograph include: Duke Ellington, Hopalong Cassidy, Milton Berle, and Eva Gabor. Joseph Thompson’s studio was located on Manor Rd. and 202 in Paoli, Pa. It was also in Paoli where he established the Thompson School of Photography and spent time as a photographic educator. In 1973, Thompson became an investigator and photographer for the Chester County Detectives. He worked with the Chester County Detectives until his retirement in 1979. After his retirement, Thompson moved to St. Augustine, Florida with his wife Winifred. In St. Augustine, he spent time as a volunteer guide for the Lightener Museum and was an active member of the Lion’s Club and the Flagler Memorial Presbyterian Church. Joseph Thompson died in St. Augustine, Florida in August, 1983. 1 Daily Local News August 24, 1983

Most notable are his photographs of national political figures including Robert F. Kennedy, Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower & Richard M. Nixon, and celebrities such as Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Eva Gabor. An additional collection of 21 glass plate negatives, owned by Joseph Thompson, are in the collection and date from 1900-1915. The collection is arranged into three series. Series Descriptions Series 1 Box 1, Files 1-66: Consists of Joseph Thompson’s work following the Republican Party campaigns [1956-1974]. Series contains images of Chester County politicians as well as state and national political figures including Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard M. Nixon, Robert F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Series is organized by date and event, as best as possible, beginning with political campaigns during the year 1956 and ending with campaigns during the year 1974. Dates and events that could not be identified are grouped by subject and located in alphabetical order at the end of the series. Series 2 Box 2, Files 67-101: Series consists of Joseph Thompson’s freelance work and is arranged by event or subject in alphabetical order. Photographs in this series include the Valley Forge Music Fair (1955-1966), aerial views of Chester County, local organizations, and celebrities.

Series 3 Box 2, Files 102-105: Photo reproductions printed by Chester County Historical Society volunteers of glass plate negatives found in Joseph Thompson’s collection. Images are dated 1900-1915 and include views of: Pennsylvania Railroad stations and locomotives, churches, rural villages, people, and businesses possibly located in Paoli, Pennsylvania and surrounding areas. Series is organized by subject. Images are not attributed to Joseph Thompson as they predate his career. About the Collection The collection of over 680 photonegatives by Joseph H. Thompson was donated to Chester County Historical Society in 1991 by Robert J. Thompson, former Pennsylvania State Senator and son of the photographer. Reference prints were created from the original negatives by Colourworks Studio in Wilmington, Delaware. An additional collection of 21 glass plate negatives was donated by Robert J. Thompson in 1988. Reference prints were created from the glass plate negatives and printed by Chester County Historical Society volunteers. Processing of this collection was made possible by a grant funded by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC).
