Departing their home at Belleville, Illinois 10 April 1855, they traveled to Mormon Grove (near Atchison), Kansas. There they joined the John Hindley Co. which departed Mormon Grove, Kansas on 7 June 1855 and arrived at Salt Lake City, Utah on 3 September 1855. During 1851, at the age of about seven (7) his Parents and six (6) children made their way to Liverpool, England and embarked aboard the sailing ship Olympus, along with 245 others. They arrived at New Orleans, Louisiana 27 Apr 1851 and made their way by riverboat to St. Louis, Missouri. The family stayed on in St. Louis area to earn funds for the remainder of their travel to Utah. During October 1851 his Mother, Mary, died. His Father, Thomas Tanner, married Sarah Newman on 10 October 1852. At the time, the Stookey & Child families lived in Belleville, Saint Clair Co., Illinois (across the Mississippi River from St. Louis).It is possible the families were acquainted at that time. 1853 his Father acquire a wagon and ox team and, with other LDS members from the Newbury Branch from England, made their way to Montrose, Iowa; opposite Nauvoo, where wagon train Captain Claudius V. Spencer was camped. After organizing the group they stared across Iowa traveling onward toward Salt Lake City, Utah where they arrived mid September 1853. His family settled at Tooele, Tooele Co., Utah When Joseph Tanner was about eleven or twelve (1855-56), a gentleman stopped him and asked him if he knew a boy who could help drive some cattle, and Joseph said that he could. This gentleman was Enos Stookey. Joseph worked for Enos for many years; he lived with the Stookey Family and later lived with Christian Christensem & Robert Young in Clover

September 16, 1872, he married Isabel Stookey in the Endowment House. They were parents of five children: Joseph Junius, Isabelle Maude, Jemima Rowena, Alfonzo Z, Vard Loren. In 1882, Joseph Tanner built a nice log house near his orchard. "It was plastered and white washed outside and inside painted, stained, and grained which was unusual out there. The house had a veranda, also a porch running full length of the front of the house.

In 1897 this house burned down and [ Joseph Tanner] rebuilt the same year. He then built another house across the street (on Stookey Lane). He homesteaded a place at Clover, where he built a large reservoir for storing water. Isabel died of pneumonia March 18, 1889. She was buried in the Stookey Family Cemetery. Joseph married Mary Jane Jordan on December 11, 1889 in the Logan Temple. Mary Jane was the daughter James Francis and Sarah Cannon Jordan, born in Gosport, England, January 8, 1851. With her parents and sister she emigrated from England to Utah during 1855. Joseph and Mary Jane had two boys: Asael Cato, and Cleo Clement. Mary was a fine looking woman, who was loved and respected. She came to Rush Valley with her parents and was some of the early settlers. She had a very colorful life; she was the only person in Clover who learned to make gloves for any who wanted them. She cured deer shives which she had bought from the Indians. She also gave up the man she loved for her religion, and never married till she was near 40 years old.

Joseph ran the mail for about 8 years in the 1880's into the 1890s from Stockton to Vernon and back. In the early 1890's he hauled freight and men for Angus M. Cannon to his mine at Dugway (West of Cover through Johnson’s Pass) over very bad roads. Joseph Tanner had an orchard which still bears fruit and is excellent condition today. The Tanner family was the first family in Clover to grow lilacs. Joseph Tanner and Foster Gordon played accordions for dances at the Stookey barn. Mary Jane died February 2, 1921. Mary Jane are buried in the Stookey Family Cemetery. Joseph died in Layton in April 19, 1923. Joseph, buried in the Stookey Family Cemetery.
