What to Expect from Your Emergency Department V isitþFamily-Centered Care

The Pediatric Emergency Department at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital is committed to providing family-centered care by supporting patients and family members alike. We have highly-qualified and specially-trained nurses and providers. Our providers are physicians and advanced practice nurses (APNs), and as a teaching hospital, medical residents may also contribute toward your child’s care. We have extensive experience in caring for infants, children and young adults with urgent needs. We are open 24/7, and our physicians are board-certified or board-eligible in pediatrics, with many of them also board-certified in pediatric emergency

medicine.

þArrival/SortingOur arrival team, which is comprised of a pediatric registered nurse (RN) and clerical associate (CA), work together to quickly register your child into our electronic patient tracking system and do a rapid assessment to prioritize your child’s care. In order to do this, the CA will search for your child by name and date of birth in the computer. To confirm you/your child’s identity, the CA may also ask for your address and phone number. This will help us ensure we have the cor-rect medical record or assist us in creating a new

one, if a medical record does not already exist.

þFull TriageOnce “sorted,” a second RN will do a more

detailed assessment to include your child’s

temperature, blood pressure, heart rate and other

necessary vitals. The RN will document these

findings into your child’s electronic medical

record in the computer.

þWaiting AreaAfter your child is fully triaged, you may be placed

in a designated patient waiting area until a treat-

ment room/area becomes available. Patients are

seen in the order of severity of illness and not in

order of arrival. We will make every effort to have

you evaluated by a provider as soon as possible.

þMedical Screening Exam

Once in the treatment area, your child will be evaluated by a medical provider and may have necessary tests ordered, some of which include:

X-ray, urine and blood testing, etc.

þRegistrationAfter your Medical Screening Exam, a registration representative will ask you for basic information (address, emergency contact, medical insurance, etc.). At that time, you will be informed of any financial obligation, such as Emergency

Department visit co-payments.

þDischargeOnce the treatment is complete, your nurse will review your discharge instructions with you and

answer any questions you may have.

þCourtesy Follow-up CallAfter discharge, you may receive a call from a transitional care nurse who will ask you a few questions about the care you received. Your feedback will help us provide the best possible patient experience.

þParkingValet parking is free, but if the parking attendant

did not valet your car, please stop at the clerical

desk on our unit to obtain a parking pass.

PLEASE NOTE:The most seriously ill patients are brought into treatment areas first.
