Joseph Lister was born in Upton, Essex, England, on April 5, 1827.

He was the second of three children born to Joseph Jackson Lister, a very successful wine merchant and amateur scientist.

new drug he improved the cleanliness of the surgeon.

Joseph Lister studied at the University of London and he entered the Royal College of Surgeons when he

was 26.

His greatest contribution to medicine was to promote the use of carbolic acid as an antiseptic.

By 1879 Lister’s ideas had been accepted by most hospitals in Britain.
