ON ThE COvERPyramids of Giza, Cairo featured in Topdeck’s Egypt programs.

A young Aussie vet working in England stumbled upon a paddock of retired Double Decker buses. With just £400, a few bunk beds and a flash of inspiration, Topdeck was born!

Topdeck has been operating trips in Egypt and the neighbouring regions for nearly 20 years and has unrivalled experience. Our new brochure

gives you a wider choice than ever before. This year we are excited to introduce Syria, which we tip to be the next hot spot for travel!

This part of the world is steeped in history and fascinating cultures, and with breathtaking landscapes all around, whichever trip you choose, a memorable adventure is guaranteed.

IT ALL BEGANin 1973…

At Topdeck, we have one overriding passion, to give 18 to 30 somethings the travel experience of a lifetime. And, as we have been doing it since 1973 we know more than a bit on how to do it. All our Topdeck Trip Leaders are English speaking, professionally trained locals with an empowering passion for their own country. They deliver a quality and enthusiasm for you, which can’t be matched by the ex-pat Trip Leaders of other operators. They also offer that added security which means it’s 100% relaxation time for you!

Typical of our Trip Leaders are Tamer & Rafik in Egypt. Tamer has worked with Topdeck since 1989, so he knows our clients as well as he knows his country. Rafik, born in Egypt, spent 15 years living in Australia so he knows the type of experience you want and blends a unique mixture of culture, history and fun to all the programmes. Whichever country you visit, rest assured you’ll get a proper local’s perspective which is key to a great travel experience.

Topdeck rises ahead of other operators in our choice of accommodation. For the majority of our itineraries, we stay in quality 3* & 4* hotels, all with air-conditioning of course! We also offer two trips for those working to a slightly lower budget where we stay in tourist class hotels.

This year, we invite you to Share the Experience with Topdeck!

Fancy a night on a four-star cruise liner? Or on a felucca cruising the Nile? Or camping amongst the stars in the Sahara? With Topdeck, all these are possible. Our hotels are all hand-picked for their quality and location, and range from budget options to four-star properties, depending on the programme you choose.

A highlight of any trip to Egypt is staying on a felucca. These traditional wooden sailing boats give you a unique view of Egypt’s gorgeous landscape. Facilities are basic but this is a true local experience. Sunbathing by day and an evening meal and campfire by night on the banks of the Nile.

hOTEL, FELUCCA OR CRUISEShIPways to stay »

SWISS INN hOTELPlenty of our Egypt trips stay at this gem of a hotel in Cairo. The view from the roof-top swimming pool overlooking Cairo is spectacular!

4 STAR NILE CRUISINGFour star travel at budget prices! These cruise ships have all the luxuries and amenities you’d expect - swimming pool, sun loungers, comfy beds and plenty of shops.

BERBER CAMPSITESleep under the stars in Morocco at a traditional Berber Campsite. Here you’ll join your fellow Topdeckers for a truly authentic experience you’ll never forget.

With so much to do in Egypt, you may feel overwhelmed by the choices available to you! Don’t worry, Topdeck is here to help! Our optional activities are carefully selected to give you the widest range of choice in all price brackets. These are some of our favourites:

A NOTE ABOUT ENTRANCES In Morocco, Jordan and Syria we have included entrance fees in your trip price. We are able to include entrances fees in these countries as costs can be guaranteed and the group prices we obtain are much better than any other discounts offered. In Egypt, the prices change regularly and discounts for groups or students vary. For this reason we cannot include entrance fees accurately and have therefore not included them in your trip price. Your Trip Leader will arrange the most cost-effective option. A guide to these prices is available on our website.,

ABU SIMBEL This destination is so popular, we include it as standard on the majority of trips in this brochure (unlike some others who charge an arm and a leg for the same excursion!). The sight of the amazing temple complex of Abu Simbel will stay with you for life.

vALLEY OF ThE KINGS We want you to see the Valley of the Kings so much, we have included it on nearly ALL our trips that go to Egypt! In modern times the valley has become famous for the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun (with its rumours of the Curse of the Pharaohs!) – what will you discover?

EAST BANK Home to Karnak and the Luxor Temples, the East Bank of Luxor is a must-see – our excursion is standard on the majority of our trips.

QUAD BIKINGHang on to your seat and set out on a desert safari on quad bikes - the best way to see the desert!

RIvER NILE DINNER CRUISECruise down the Nile on our dinner cruise where you’ll enjoy great food and be entertained by a belly dancer, live music and Darwish dance.

GIFTON ISLANDWe think Gifton Island is one of the most beautiful islands in the world. Think stunning coral reefs, colourful fish and amazing wildlife. Our day excursion to Gifton includes lunch and is sure to delight.

NUBIAN vILLAGE & DINNERTravel by boat (and camel!) to an authentic Nubian Village for an unforgettable day out. Meet the villagers, learn some local language skills and end the day with dinner in a local home. The memories of this day will last a lifetime.

4 DAYS FROM dAHAB

DAY 1 Cairo – Petra. After breakfast we transfer to the port of nuweiba and catch the ferry to Aqaba, situated on the tip of the Red Sea. From Aqaba we head to beautiful Petra where we stay overnight ready for our visit the next morning.

DAY 2 Petra – Wadi Rum. We have most of the day to enjoy the awesome Rose city carved out of the mountain. Petra’s importance grew due to the caravan trade, but with the development of sea trade it dwindled and by the 14th century was effectively lost to the west, only being rediscovered in 1812. Our local guide will make the city come to life.

later in the afternoon we head off to Wadi Rum, an amazing area made famous as the base for the Arab revolt during WWI and the filming of lawrence of Arabia. This maze of rockscapes rise from the desert floor to a height of up to 1750 metres. We then travel through stunning desert landscape en route to stay in a desert camp and enjoy a traditional dinner. (B,d)

DAY 3 Cairo. After breakfast we transfer to Aqaba Port and catch the ferry back to newaba. Here we meet our transfer back to cairo where the trip finishes. (B)

DAY 1 Amman. Arrive at Queen Alia International Airport and meet our Topdeck representative. A transfer to the hotel is included.

DAY 2 Amman. We head north through the olive groves to the ancient city of Jerash. Our local guide shows us around the complex. See Hadrian’s Arch, built to commemorate his visit in 129Ad. The hippodrome, which hosted the chariot races, could hold 15,000 spectators, and the colonnaded main street still has the ruts made from the chariots. From Jerash we visit Ajloun castle with spectacular views over the Jordan Valley. We arrive back in Amman for the evening. (B)

DAY 3 Amman – Petra. We travel to the town of Madaba, the christian centre of Jordan, famous for its mosaics. From here it is not far to Mt nebo where Moses is said to have seen the Promised land. Then we head off to the Mujeb Valley, known as the Grand canyon of Jordan – the valley is 1km deep and 4km wide. We also stop at Karak one of Jordan’s most famous castles before arriving in Petra (B).

DAY 4 Petra. A full day to enjoy, and take in, the awesome Rose city. Petra’s importance grew due to the caravan trade, but with the development of sea trade its importance dwindled and by the 14th century it was effectively lost to the West, only being rediscovered in 1812. Our local guide will make Petra come to life. (B)

DAY 5 Petra – Wadi Rum. Today we head off to the desert stopping first at ‘little Petra’. This maze of rockscapes rise from the desert floor to a height of up to 1750 metres. We transfer to 4x4 Jeeps for a journey through stunning desert landscape. Tonight we stay in a desert camp. (B,d)

DAY 6 Petra – Amman. Heading for the western side of Jordan we travel to the dead Sea. The high salinity of the water means you literally bob about on the surface. We spend time here swimming, and relaxing before heading back to Amman late afternoon. (B)

GOT A QUESTION?hOW MANY PEOPLE IN MY GROUP? Experiencing a new country with people who have the same outlook on travelling as you, really adds to the enjoyment. With an average group size in 2009 of 25 in Egypt, 15 in Morocco and 10 in Jordan and Israel, you easily get to know everyone and long-standing friendships are made. And there’s no issue if you are travelling alone. With over 50% of our passengers starting their trip alone, Topdeck is great for single travellers so you don’t have to worry about being without some good company – and better still there is no compulsory single supplement.

WhAT IS ThE LOCAL PAYMENT?To give you the best value we have arranged that an element of your trip cost is paid locally. This amount is listed on each itinerary page.

This payment should be paid in cash in the currency mentioned at the arrival meeting on day 1. This payment is not used for any specific expense and forms part of the total package price of your trips. By paying locally, we are able to keep costs down for you and this allows you additional time to save money for your trip.

WhAT IS INCLUDED WITh MY TRIP?Loads of things! Check out the What’s Included box on each trip page. Everything that is included within the trip price such as accommodation, meals, sight-seeing and modes of transport are

listed here. Breakfast is included daily and will vary between cooked and continental. Lunches and dinners are included where listed on the trip itinerary.

ARE ENTRANCE FEES INCLUDED?In Morocco, Jordan and Syria we have included entrance fees in your trip price. We are able to offer this as entrance fees in these countries can be guaranteed and the group prices we can obtain are much better than any other discounts offered.

In Egypt, the prices change regularly and discounts for groups or students varies. For this reason we cannot include entrance fees in an accurate manner and have therefore not included them in your trip price. Your Trip Leader will arrange the most cost-effective option on your trip. A guide to current entrance fees is available on our website.

WhAT TYPE OF ACCOMMODATION WILL I STAY IN?For the majority of our itineraries, we stay in superior quality 3* & 4* hotels, all with air-conditioning of course! You also have the opportunity to stay in a tent in the stunning desert landscapes of Jordan or Morocco – a unique experience!

We also offer trips for those working to a slightly lower budget where we stay in tourist class hotels. Perfect for leaving a bit more cash to spend on some of the great optionals available. Look out for the ‘budget’ symbol.

hOW DO I GET TO MY DESTINATION?Because our passengers fly in from all over the world, and to give you the chance to grab great flight deals locally, we do not include flights with our packages. You’ll be able to source the best deals either from the internet or your travel agent. We include a meet & greet at the airport and transfers to your hotel at all our destinations, which means a stress free start of your holiday!

CAN I EXTEND MY STAY?As well as being able to arrange pre and post-trip accommodation for you, there are also bolt on packages that you can add to your holiday. Spend some more time in bustling Cairo, visit the rose city of Petra and the stunning scenery of Wadi Rum or take an excursion to historic Alexandria. Or add on some hiking in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and visit the Berber villages.

CAN I LEARN TO DIvE?Topdeck’s Learn to Dive in Dahab is the perfect trip for people learning to dive. All equipment (with the exception of the dive manual) is included in the trip price.

If you are an experienced diver and need a refresher course, these can be booked for an additional USD$30. Guided dives are also available for passengers who already have an Open Water Licence and had been for a dive within the last six months (supplement applies).

WhAT KIND OF TRANSPORTATION DOES TOPDECK USE?From 1st Class recliner seat trains, to 4*luxury Nile cruise boats, to the latest model air-conditioned mini-buses – our choice and quality of each mode of transportation (all included in your trip price) will ensure you arrive at each destination feeling refreshed and ready to explore.

Please note that for operational reasons we sometimes substitute private luxury coaches in place of overnight trains in Egypt. This will not affect your itinerary or places visited.

WhAT ShOULD I BRING?It’s mostly dry and varies between hot days and mild nights in the summer months to warm days and cool nights in the winter. Lightweight cottons and linens are recommended for the summer with some warmer clothing needed for winter. For trips that include a felucca sail, it is important that you bring a sleeping bag with you. Be sure to bring a swimming costume with you (although for winter departures this isn’t as important!).

Local currency is easily available from the numerous cash machines but you should have some cash (US$ or GBP) with you on arrival. Tipping is expected for quite a few things (carrying your luggage etc) but you only need to give a small amount and your Trip Leader will advise you.
