The name Dolphin Island evokes a tropical idyll, and the tiny dot within a crystal-clear archipelago in Fiji’s relatively remote north delivers on all counts. Step ashore from your private boat or seaplane and your time in paradise begins, surrounded
by azure waters off shore from the tip of Viti Levu. There are just four luxurious guest bure suites on
the island, ensuring privacy, intimacy and utter relaxation for the duration of your stay. Lobster tail served on the island’s floating pontoon? Maybe with a bowl of fresh, fat garlic prawns fresh off the boat? Perhaps a glass of chardonnay, Eden Valley riesling or simply more Bollinger to wash down your fresh seafood feast? To say this resort is indulgent is like saying Bill Gates is wealthy. And like Gates, guests are empowered to call all the shots, for whatever they want and when.
The key to Dolphin Island is its simplicity: while it’s utterly indulgent it’s very much the authentic Fiji with not a marble lobby or kids’ club in sight. Rustic yet refined, it’s all about barefoot luxury, with the bonus of feeling like a castaway on Fantasy Island.
The main bure pavilion is Dolphin Island’s hub of rest, relaxation, dining and fun, where guests gather

to discuss their requirements with island host Dawn Simpson and her team, and of course to unwind and indulge. Staff look after guests as little or as much as they desire, keeping wine glasses filled while serving up an endless feast of curries and seafood. Breakfast, lunch and dinner all feature fresh produce and flavours unique to Fijian cuisine and can be served wherever you please: on the beach, in your bure or even on a boat.
With 14 acres of private island as your playground you are unlikely to feel the need to ever leave, however, while Dolphin Island is a blissful want-for-nothing private escape, you still feel connected to the Sun Coast of Viti Levu. This balancing act is thanks to owner Alex van Heeren, who understands his guests want to be able to dip in and dip out, not just of the water, but of more stimulating activities on the mainland. If you’re the type that tires of endless indolence, cultural visits to nearby villages can be easily arranged, as well as on-island performances that sweeten the taste of feasts cooked underground in a lovo. Local villagers turn up armed with grass skirts and hibiscus flowers for guests, which could sound kitsch and touristy, but is executed with the true generosity of spirit that makes Fijian hospitality so uplifting.
Satiated and sleepy, the bures are soothing to return to because they are luxe, but not in a razzle-dazzle kind of way. The furniture and interiors come in a serene palette of grey and white, created by renowned New Zealand interior designer Virginia Fisher, while the floors are covered with traditional palm mats. The gentle sounds of the island surround you, as does the subtle scent of coconut, frangipani and mango – a scent you’ll want to cling to when you are prised from paradise to return to reality. J

World-class diving experiences await in the waters surrounding Dolphin Island. Both snorkelling and tank diving trips
can be arranged for guests. Pack a picnic and set off on a sea kayak to the nearby islands and see what you can discover. Cruise the warm tropical waters and explore the coral reefs on the island’s
catamaran, with dolphins alongside for company. Take a fishing trip to nearby
sheltered reefs to fish for coral trout, cod, and snapper. All transfers are by private boat and include fishing gear equipment
and refreshments. And when you’re looking to just relax, there are a variety
of spa treatments also available. This 14-acre private island is a 2½ hour drive from Nadi to Rakiraki on the tip of Viti Levu. Then it’s just a 30-minute
boat ride to your own paradise. Helicopter and seaplane transfers are
also available at additional cost. For more information visit

Sonnet 18, William Shakespeare
Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm’d;And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course, untrimm’d:But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st;Nor shall Death brag thou wander’st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st:So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
