The Great Indian Blunder

The entire world is advancing, moving forward taking giant leaps, in the field of medicines, space, IT. We Indians claim to be the future superpower, but what really is going on right now, proves to be a global mockery of our country by our own people.

I'm talkin about "Ram Setu" that "the HINDU EXTREMIST" claim was built by Ram, i don't know what is the basis of their claim. They claim NASA footage shows that there is a bridge between India and Sri-lanka. But, the footages that they're using as the basis of their claim, NASA itself backs off from it, n says that "Some people have taken pictures taken by our astronauts to make their claim. No position can be taken on the basis of these photographs in any way,' Braukus said when asked to comment on the controversy surrounding the site of the proposed Rs.24 billion Sethusamudram canal project off India's southern tip.

Now, what point VHP and BJP want to prove by blocking roads? creating a stir across the nation? calling India as a Hindu nation(so, can only Hindus live in India)? They're are just filling our Indian minds with stuffs, that instead of takin us to 21st century will throw us back to the "Ram Era". Then, we can proudly claim that it is our Ram setu, n bluild more like that... I'm wonderin how will they use that bridge? they can't even run their cycle on it, whatever, If we believe in what these so called "HINDU RAKSHAK" are claimin, so be prepared.

If they would have protested on scientific grounds, environmental grounds, it would have made sense, the basis that they are using to protest, jus makes me laugh.

If they claim Ram is a god, n u know what God means. did he only create that Bridge? hmm, if yes, then he's no good god at all, God created this whole world, preserve it, God isnt' the creator of a mere bridge, neither he can be identified with it. Grow up be mature,

Respect Every religion, that is what India is identified as, preserve it's identity

ANDHA KANOON aur ADAALAT kabhi is MR. NATWARLAL ko GIRAFTAAR na kar sake.  Who MAHAAN se NAASTIK ban kar kabhi AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY, kabhi SHARABI, kabhi KAALIA, kabhi COOLIE ban at. Aur kabhi HERA PHERI kar SATTE PE SATTA marta.

Lekin ek din wo KAALA PATHTHAR ek DESH PREMI ban gaya.  Oos MARD me ek SHAKTI jaagi aur wo MUQADDAR KA SIKANDAR samay ki GANGA JAMNA SARASWATI paar kar SHAHENSHAH ban gaya!

Bad spending Habits

Page 3: Joke & Great Treands

Do you have to buy that new dress enticingly displayed in the shop window when you pass it? Do dinner plans mostly involve wine and a dinner jacket?

Do credit cards companies frequently upgrade you to premium cards or keep mailing discount vouchers? If the answers to most of these questions are positive, your wallet is probably biting more than it can chew.

What do you do in such a situation? Read on to gather some pointers on curbing the spending habit.

1. Plan daily expenses Make a list of the number of days in the week you have returned home completely out of cash. Most spendthrifts are only constrained by the amount of money they carry on themselves.

With plastic money becoming the more preferred option worldwide, the sky is the limit for your expenses!

Run through your day in your mind before leaving home, and take money accordingly. Ask yourself before each purchase/ expenditure if it was planned at the start of the day. Do not exceed 10-15 per cent of your daily budget on unplanned expenses, and not more than 20 per cent for the entire week on the same.

For most working people, Rs 300-350 per day is quite sufficient for their day-to-day-expenses. So, even on the safer side, a weekly budget of Rs 3,000 should suffice. Anything in excess of this on a consistent basis might be a cause for alarm.

2. Eating out An absolute inevitability since this is what most plans materialise into. What other options does one have in crowded cities after a hectic day at college or at work?

So, what is a good place to eat at? One with great ambience, a tempting menu or one at a plush downtown location; the answer is not as easy as it seems. A common mistake most of us commit is to expect all these factors together in a single lunch/ dinner experience.

Over a month, split your 'perfect outing' expectations

Page 4: Joke & Great Treands

into separate inexpensive outings. Visit a place known just for its good food once, the week after that focus a little more on the ambience and less on the food. Not only will you have more outings and experiences to recount, they will also be far richer and significantly inexpensive.

Do not indulge in cola drinks/ sodas at restaurants. Avoid ice creams there too, since you needlessly pay a surcharge.

In case of an excessive order, do not feel embarrassed to ask for the remaining food to be packed. Not only will this save you some money the next day, in all probability it will beat your average meal at home hands down.

3. Shopping For a majority of people, shopping basically involves clothes, gadgets and other commodities. Split your shopping into two categories: necessity and splurge. After all, cutting down on expenses does not mean giving up on splurging altogether.

Frequent factory outlets for branded clothes and shoes. Also, do not let the aura of your branded apparel cannibalise each other. Mix and match your branded jeans with a plain tee or that branded tee with a shirt thrown over it.

Being noticed is not a function of your spending, but of how well you flaunt it.

When it comes to gadgets, try looking for devices with multiple features to suit your needs. For example, rather than buying an MP3 player and a stylish phone, you might want to go for a music phone.

If you are a movie buff, a DVD player might be a cheaper option in the long run to catching evening shows in multiplexes.

4. Monthly bills Mobile phones are one of the chief damage causers to most monthly budgets. Choose a tariff plan according to your usage, and keep checking for updated plans. This applies to heavy and moderate users alike. There have

Page 5: Joke & Great Treands

been cases where customers have paid monthly rental costs that exceed their actual phone usage.

Remember that lower call rates and higher tariffs help if you are a heavy user, not generically for all usage patterns. If you operate among a close set of friends, it will prove cheaper if you all get connections from the same service provider.

Air conditioners and boilers/ geysers are a further cause for worry at the end of each month. Set the air conditioner on timer mode and try keeping the temperature around 24 degrees.

Remember to switch off boilers while bathing; unlike geysers, they store hot water unlike geysers and are hence functional for a good few minutes after being switched off.

5. Invest Most people have turned spendthrift these days due to the rise in the disposable incomes; also, everyone is moving up the economic ladder.

Investing is a sensible option on many fronts: be it just saving money, getting healthy returns or tax saving purposes.

If you are a compulsive spender, try splitting your investments month-wise. This will ensure you save some money every month; these small savings add up to a healthy investment at the year-end.

You could choose between SIPs (Systematic Investment Plans) or a more secure government saving scheme.

Over-spending is a matter of habit more than anything else. Maintaining a monthly expense sheet will help you sort out most of these problems conveniently.

To help with the motivation, keep rewarding yourself with a day of splurging for a fortnight well-planned. Unlike what most people may say, over-spending is not a habit one can give up gradually.

Page 6: Joke & Great Treands

Like most bad habits, it has to be nipped in the bud. So take charge, and spend wise.

Insure Wisely

Though agents promote Ulips instead of term policies, the latter make more sense for pure insurance purposes.

Sanjay Khatri, a young telecom professional, was recently purchasing a life insurance policy.

While scouting for the right product through different agents, he found that a large number of agents were very gung-ho about Unit Linked Insurance Plans (Ulips).

"The returns are very good and you get both investment and insurance on a single policy," he was told. On cross checking with his friends, he found that some of them had also bought similar policies.

With his mind made up, he approached his financial planner to scout for a Ulip that matched his age profile. But to his surprise, the planner shot down the basic idea to buy a Ulip.

The advice was clear: "No point in buying a policy that is way too expensive and does not provide adequate cover."

When he sought an explanation, here's what he got: Ulips typically charge you a large number of fees. This starts with premium allocation charge, followed by policy administration charge, fund management charge... the list goes on.

Especially, in the first year, there is a deduction of about over 40 per cent from your premium.

In the next two years, these amounts come down but it is still as high as 20 per cent. Only in the fourth year onwards, it settles at 4 per cent per annum. Compare this with a pure term policy and the numbers are dramatically different -- a mere 7 per cent in the first year.

Also, Ulips do not give an adequate insurance cover. For

Page 7: Joke & Great Treands

instance, a 30-year-old buying a term policy of Rs 50 lakh (Rs 5 million) per annum will have to pay a premium of Rs 15,000 odd per annum while an aggressive Ulip with the same cover would cost over Rs 200,000 per annum.

Says Rahul Aggarwal, CEO, Optima Risk Management Services, "Term policies help people who have modest budgets to get high insurance cover."

So, what makes Ulips attractive? Ulips promise great returns in the long run while in case of a term policy, you do not get any survival benefit. And that is where the sellers get you.

Says Rahul Aggarwal, CEO, Optima Risk Management Services, "Ulips sales are driven by stock market buoyancy." According to him, people who already have adequate term cover and understand stock market risks should only buy these products.

And more importantly, when the insurance broker tries to sell you Ulips, you should simply ask him for his brokerage. A cool 35 per cent in the first year itself. For a term policy, he would barely get 2-5 per cent.

Says Agarawal, "Ulips neither give adequate cover nor are they efficient saving instruments. Since the insurers and the distribution channels have entrenched interest in promoting them, customer education and awareness should become the main tool in controlling fallacious and misleading sales."

Also, Ulips do not allow you to surrender the policy in the first three years. And if you were to do so, the money would only come back after the completion of the third year.

As for the returns, while some companies boast of good Net Asset Values , one can only gauge the actual returns once it is multiplied by the number of units. This is because, insurance companies also deduct some costs from the units that is allotted to you.

In short, remember that the best thing you can buy from

Page 8: Joke & Great Treands

an insurance company is "an insurance policy." And for investments, there are always mutual funds and stocks.

Twelve books that changed the world

1.The Origin of Species

When Charles Darwin's book went on sale to the trade on November 22, 1859 the stock of 1,250

Page 15: Joke & Great Treands

copies was oversubscribed.

His theory: Evolution was by natural selection, not a divine process.

The most enthusiastic response came from radical atheists, who hailed Darwin as "the greatest revolutionist in natural history of this century" but clerics were pained at his theory which entirely ruled out divine intervention and destroyed the idea that all creatures were immutably made during the seven-day Creation.

2.The FA Rule Book In 1863, the Football Association's First Rule Book set out a list which regulated the game in and around London, though for quite some time the provinces clubs continued to follow their local rules.

The FA Rule Book forms the basis for the modern rules of the game.

1st game played under the rules: January 9, 1863 at Battersea Park in south-west London.

Page 16: Joke & Great Treands

3.Shakespeare's 1st Folio

The first collected edition of William Shakespeare's plays was published in 1623.

Collection: 36 plays, 18 of which were published for the first time, thus saving such works as The Tempest and Macbeth from probable extinction. Collected by: Actor editors John Heminge and Henry Condell.

These plays were not attributed to Shakespeare until the date of publication, seven years after his death.

4.Principia Mathematica

Isaac Newton in his Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, published on July 5, 1687 describes

Page 17: Joke & Great Treands

the universal gravitation and, via his laws of motion, laid the groundwork for classical mechanics.

Generally regarded as one of the most important works in the history of science, it also contains the Hypotheses non fingo ("I do not assert that any hypotheses are true").

5.The Wealth of Nations

The Scottish economist Adam Smith's groundbreaking book, published in 1776, is the first complete system of political economy by the articulator of laissez-faire capitalism. It set the foundation for modern economics.

He supports the theory that the less government interferes with business, the more prosperous the nation will be.

Page 18: Joke & Great Treands

6.Wilberforce's speech

On May 12, 1789, the Tory MP William Wilberforce made his first speech against the slave trade.

It was a speech that changed history.

Wilberforce said: "...having heard all of this you may choose to look the other way but you can never again say that you did not know."

Until then it was possible for people in Britain to say that they did not know the truth about slavery..

Secrets of Job-Hopping

Whoever said, 'A rolling stone gathers no moss', certainly didn't belong to our times!

A few years ago, three or four jobs hops in 24-36 months on a resume would have spelt doom.

But the rules have changed.

A rolling stone now reaches faraway lands and for the good!

Says Astad Dhunjisha, manager, HR, ICICI, "The average job tenure has gone down drastically. Job hopping is not stigmatised anymore."

Page 19: Joke & Great Treands

Jeevanand, web consultant with a leading portal, says, "The scene has changed so drastically that if you have been with a company for long, people begin to question your credibility."

That might be quite the other extreme.

But the fact remains that, these days, employers are much more tolerant to job-hopping.

When is it fine to job-hop?

Sherry, assistant manager, HR, Percept, says, "Job-hopping is more frequent and acceptable at the junior levels. Besides, it is seen as an asset or a liability, depending on the position applied for."

Meltan D'Costa, assistant GM, Hathway, seconds this, saying, "Job-hopping might be looked upon as an asset for a sales/ marketing position, which requires exposure to various markets. But for an operations/ accounts position, the job demands someone who has a more stable track record."

So hoppers, if it adds value to your job profile, go for it!

What motivates a hopper?

HR professionals and employees agree unanimously that the top reasons for quitting a job are: a better paying job, better job profile and career growth opportunities.

But besides these obvious positive motivators job dissatisfaction, untimely appraisals, odd work hours and personal problems are catching up as negative motivators.

Many believe that job-hopping in the initial years helps you test the waters.

Ritesh*, senior systems analyst, with six job hops in six years, says, "Job-hopping in the early years helps you explore various options, learn what you are cut

Page 20: Joke & Great Treands

out for, experiment with different genres and expose yourself to various work cultures before you makes a final decision to settle down."

Can HR do anything about it?

Job-hopping leading to the decrease in the overall life cycle of a job isn't exactly viewed as an ugly-faced monster.

Most believe that a moderate attrition rate is a necessary evil.

HR personnel across industries agree that a full-fledged retention strategy will bring down attrition rates.

Besides monetary compensations which can be matched easily by competitors, a competitive environment, a diverse profile where learning is possible and sense of fulfillment go a long way to make employees feel valued.

Says Manisha Kelkar, senior manager HR, WNS Services, "Youngsters need to be educated and made to realise that if they are looking to craft a career, they have to look beyond meagre monetary changes."

Job hops that seem frivolous could affect your career advancement in a big way.

How does one know when to hop?

For those who need adhesives to help them stick on to their jobs, there is something called a decent minimum interval, which makes it safe to roll on.

But the general rule that both employees and employers agree on is a minimum interval of one year at the junior level and two to three years at the senior levels.

Says Dharmesh, systems analyst, at a leading web site, "Job-hops help quick raises in the salary, but

Page 21: Joke & Great Treands

don't help you move up the ladder. But hanging on to your job works exactly the other way around."

So hoppers, choose what is important to you and roll with it!

Job hopper dos and don'ts!

Here are things you must keep in mind if your resume looks more like the central railway map with a halt at every station!

1. Don't change jobs for a meagre increase in salary (a few thousands), unless it is absolutely critical to your health.

2. Don't ever make the reason for your change of job seem trivial or unnecessary, but a rational conscious decision taken with caution.

3. At an interview, justify every career move in a rational way when asked.

4. Don't drop out jobs from your resume that you think will convey a negative impression. Highlight the positive outcome of each job shift. Masking your resume doesn't really help.

5. Always make a cost-benefit analysis of working with your present employer vis-a-vis working with the future one. The points to focus on are: money, designation, growth opportunities, work hours, work environment, etc.

If four or more are in favour of your new job, you can safely quit.

6. If you have hopped for positive reasons, highlight the achievements, the experience gained with the exposure, the personal and professional growth achieved, and employers will be more than eager to take you in.

7. Never belittle or defame your previous employer or your company and you mark them as the reason

Page 22: Joke & Great Treands

for your leaving the job. This attitude reflects lack of professionalism.

And, finally, remember: you can't keep hopping all your life!

Is there a stop to the hop? What comes to mind here is the vision of a future so beautifully sketched by Alvin Toffler in his Future Shock.

As he sees it, in the world of the future, the job turnover rates will reach an all-time high.

An average 20-year old will change six to seven jobs in a lifetime.

People will not just have a career but serial careers, so to speak.

The job that each person does will be measured not just in terms of his/ her present job, but the 'trajectory' his/ her career has had.

Shocking? Not really!

Do U Know

English Bloopers: Tips to ace those tricky adjectives!

Adjectives spice up our speech and enhance our writing. They help us describe the people, places and things around us. Unfortunately, adjectives in English can be quite a challenge. They are full of exceptions and confusion, especially for those not familiar with the language.

Thankfully, 26-year-old Praveen Madhukar Naik from Bangalore, sent us a lengthy list explaining their proper use. He writes:

Every adjective can be written in an absolute (small), comparative (smaller) and superlative form (smallest).

There are four ways in which the comparative form can be used:

1. In some cases, 'more' and 'most' is added before the adjective, for comparative and superlative respectively.

Take a look at the following sentences, where the wrong comparative form of the adjective has been used:

Page 30: Joke & Great Treands

This flower is beautifuler than that flower. The tiger is the beautifulest animal in the world! In the future, be honester. My mother is the honestest lady I know.

Instead, use:

Correct : This flower is more beautiful than that flower.

Correct : The tiger is the most beautiful animal in the world!

Correct : In the future, be more honest.

Correct : My mother is the most honest lady I know.

2. In other adjectives, just add 'er' for comparative and 'est' for superlative.

Wrong : He runs more fast than you.

Wrong : He is the most fast boy in my class!

Wrong : Have you ever received a more warm reception?

Wrong : This is the most warm I've ever felt!

Try this:

Correct : He runs faster than you. Correct : He is the fastest boy in my class!

Correct : Have you ever received a warmer reception? Correct : This is the warmest I've ever felt!

With some adjectives, as in the case of good and bad for example, the whole word changes.

Wrong : She is a gooder student than me.

Wrong : She is the goodest cook in Mumbai.

Page 31: Joke & Great Treands

Wrong : He is a badder chess player than you.

Wrong : He is the baddest author on the planet!

This should be:

Correct : She is a better student than me. Correct : She is the best cook in Mumbai!

Correct : He is a worse chess player than you. Correct : He is the worst author on the planet!

4. In some cases, the adjective can be written in comparative and superlative form in more than one way.

Wrong : Be more gentle with the kitten. Wrong : Your sister is the most gentle person I know!

Wrong : We were more quiet than mice.

Wrong : Is this the most quiet you've ever been?

This is also correct:

Correct : Be gentler with the kitten!

Correct : Your sister is the gentlest person I know! Correct : We were quieter than mice.

Correct : Is this the quietest you've ever been?

R S Swaminathan from Mumbai shows what happens when we misplace adjectives. The 50-year-old was attending a function and the speaker presented an award to someone. He said, 'As a token of our small appreciation, we present...'

Obviously, Correct : he meant to say, 'As a small token of our appreciation, we present..'

As you can see, adjectives have many rules and exceptions in the English language. Don't despair; with practice and constant usage, you'll soon be a master.

Page 32: Joke & Great Treands

And if you make the occasional mistake, don't worry!

Even native English speakers sometimes slip when dealing with these pesky adjectives.
