9 am Special Service of Installation

Please join our four congregations of the Northwoods STaR Minis-

tries—First Ogema, First Westboro, First Prentice and Zion Brant-

wood for a special joint worship service on Sunday, October 13.

Pastor Evelyn Weston and Pastor Steven Weston will be installed

as pastors for Northwoods STaR Ministries. Assistant to the Bishop,

Randy Olson, will be presiding over the service.

A fellowship coffee time will be held after the service.

This will be the only worship service on Sunday, October 13.

From The Westons...

Dear friends in Christ,

We are slowly settling into the parsonage in Ogema and can hardly wait to begin ministry with

and among you! Here is a little about us and our family.

Steve: I was born and raised in the Seattle area. I went to college at Pacific Lutheran University

in Tacoma, Washington, majoring in math. After that I served four years in the US Air Force, sta-

tioned at a base near San Antonio, Texas. From there I went to Luther Seminary in St. Paul, where

I met Evelyn. I was ordained in 1993.

Evelyn: Hibbing, Minnesota is my hometown. I majored in Theatre Arts and English at Concordia

College in Moorhead, Minnesota, and then worked in Minneapolis... until God called me to

study at Luther Seminary, where I met Steve. I was an Associate in Ministry in the ELCA until I real-

ized God was calling me to become a pastor for rural churches. After more seminary classes, I

was ordained in 2002.

We have three sons. Sam (26) and Ben (24) share an apartment in Duluth. Jon (19) is in his sec-

ond year at Augsburg University in Minneapolis.

Evelyn: I enjoy singing, traveling the USA by car, following the Minnesota Twins, and connecting

with friends in real life and on Facebook. In the past, I have enjoyed sewing, knitting, cross-stitch,

cooking, and canoeing. My ministry gifts include youth ministry, caring for community, and dis-

cerning where God may be leading us.

Steve: I’ve had a variety of hobbies and interests at various times: chess, math, science, word

and logic puzzles, canoeing, sailing, tinkering with computers and other electronic things, and

most recently writing hymns. My ministry gifts include teaching and pastoral care.

We have served churches in the NW MN, SW MN, and NE MN Synods, serving parishes of 1, 2, 3,

& 7 churches. We have served separately and together, but always feel we do our best when

we are ministry partners. We look forward to getting to know you as we all move ahead into the

future God has in store for Northwoods STaR Ministries.

First Lutheran Church-Prentice is offering something new. We have added electronic

giving through Vanco, for those who would like to automate their offerings. Electron-

ic giving offers convenience for individual congregation members and provides

much-needed donation consistency for our congregation. As you contemplate fu-

ture contributions, please consider electronic giving. Authorization forms and addi-

tional information are available from the church office.

There are three (3) different ways for you to choose from.

#1 By filling out an authorization form and bringing it to the church off. You will be able to set up auto-

matic giving from either your checking or savings account.

#2 You can go to our Facebook page and click on the URL provided to set up your account, set up an

automatic donation plan, change your donation plan, make a one-time donation and view your

online donation history.

#3 Donate from your smart phone

There is also a mobile version of our online giving page to make it easy for you to give anytime from

your smart phone. Just go to the “APP Store” on your phone, search for “Give Plus+” and download the

Vanco App. I have screen shots from an iphone to show you the steps if you want to stop in the office

and pick one up, or I could email it to you also. You can make changes anytime you want, frequency,

amount and what fund you want it to go to.

A GREENER APPROACH TO GIVING

Churches were among the earliest organizations to embrace electronic giving as a way to automate

contributions. Today, electronic giving in all its forms provides convenience for frequent check writers

and donation consistency for churches. A less frequently discussed benefit of electronic giving is its pos-

itive impact on the environment. An enormous amount of natural resources are consumed in the pro-

duction, transportation, processing and disposal of paper checks. That’s why paying bills electronically

always ranks high on any list of actions an individual can take to improve the environment. The trend

toward electronic payments has already produced more than a 50% decline in check use since the

year 2000. As you consider the payment method you use to make your regular offering, we hope that

you will think about the unique connection between financial stewardship and environmental steward-

ship.

New Confirmation Year Begins!

An orientation for this year's Northwoods STaR Ministries Confirmation

program will be on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at 6:30 pm at First Lu-

theran Prentice. There will be an explanation of this year's program and

registration. Students who will be starting to attend Confirmation and at

least one parent or guardian should attend this orientation meeting

The NSM Confirmation program is for students from all four of our congregations, as well as any

friends who might want to participate. It is currently being redesigned as a two-year program

starting in 7th grade.
