Welcome to the Bangkok plan

• The 31st IFATCA Asia Pacific Regional Meeting is a ‘Low Cost’ meeting. There is no Member Association hosting the event and no registration fee. Therefore the meeting is arranged on a ‘user pays’ basis for coffee, lunch and any social activities. However Bangkok is a very affordable city, with good hotels at very reasonable prices, great food at half the price you pay back home and very friendly people !

• IFATCA is greatly indebted to AeroThai for generously providing an excellent venue for the meeting and for their administrative support throughout the meeting.

• Although the meeting arrangements are low cost – the quality of the presentations and speakers will be first class.

• As well as this being the first low cost Regional Meeting, this is also the first time an IFATCA Regional Meeting has been held in conjunction with a meeting of the IFALPA ATS Committee, so there will be many opportunities for you (the service provider) to talk face to face with them (the customer) !

Useful information

2. Climate November is one of the best months to visit Thailand - warm temperatures (daytime 30°C, night time 25°C), low humidity (60%), sunny days with a few showers.

3. Currency The Thai baht is a stable currency and most foreign currencies can be readily

exchanged in banks (0900-1900 Mon-Sat) and money exchange shops (1000-2100 daily). The current rate is approximately 1US$ = 31 TB. ATM machines are plentiful and accept all major international banking cards. Credit cards are accepted in hotels, shopping malls, large restaurants and coffee shops. Cash is used in market stalls, small restaurants and bars.

4. Meeting Location The meeting will be held in the Meeting Hall of the Aerothai Anniversary Building,

located within the Director of Civil Aviation compound, Ngan Duphli Alley, Sathon, Bangkok. A map showing the location and a message in Thai for the taxi driver will be provided.

Accommodation

Delegates should make their own hotel arrangements. There are many hotel bookingagency websites offering an extensive selection of hotels in Bangkok, e.g. AsiaRooms‘www.asiarooms.com’ and Agoda ‘www.agoda.com’. There are many tourist hotels in the Sukhumvitand Sathon districts (Aerothai is in the Sathon area). The following three hotels within easy walkingdistance of Aerothai (the prices are as of mid-August and a 17% tax is added to the quoted price).

Aetas Lumpini Hotel: 4 Star 2800 Baht per night Modern business hotel. Good value. 15 minute walk to Aerothai. Pinnacle Lumpini Park Hotel

3 Star 1400 Baht per nighthotel with big rooms. 10 minute walk to Aerothai

Travel informationTransportBangkok has a very efficient subway system (MRT) and an equally effective Skytrain system (BTS). The ticket machines at the stations all have English instructions. The MRT machines accepts coins and bank notes, but the BTS machines only accept coins. However all stations also have a ticket counter with English speaking staff. The closest stations to Aerotahi are MRT Klong Toei, MRT Lumpini and BTS Chong Nonsi, each about a 20 minute walk.

Taxis are plentiful - there are 150,000 taxis in Bangkok and some of the drivers speak a little English (it is wise to get the hotel doorman to give your destination to the driver). Taxis are cheap – a minimum charge of 35 TB, but because of traffic congestion, journey times can often be long with a consequent increase in price.

After HoursThai food is known throughout the world for being hot and spicy. However there are many delicious Thai dishes that are very mild – on the table there will be a selection of fried chillis, crushed chilli and chilli oil, so you can make your meal as hot as you want ! Many restaurants will prepare dishes with none or little spice (nit nong prit) for visitors. There are many websites giving advice and recommendations on Bangkok nightlife - where to go and what to do. Bangkok has something for everyone !

Meeting RegistrationPre-meeting registration is NOT required. However in order to assess the probable number of delegates, MAs are requested to send to the contact persons (see below) the number of members that will attend the meeting.

Other destinations in ThailandDepending on the time you have available in Thailand you may consider visiting areas to the north of the country such as Chiang Mai or many of the tropical islands in the gulf. Tourism information is provided at the end of this document.
