CHER(E)S PARTICIPANT(E)S, Il me fait grand plaisir de vous souhaiter la bienvenue à la Conférence biennale de la Société canadienne d’économie écologique, organisée conjointement avec l’initiative Economics for the Anthropocene. Depuis plus d’un an, le comité de planification,travaille de pair avec les conseils d’administration de la SCANÉÉ et de E4A pour faire de cet événement un succès. Depuis le début de cette aventure, notre objectif est de faire en sorte que la conférence puisse être,une vitrine pour des travaux de recherche et de réflexion de notre discipline, mais aussi un moment où des nouvelles rencontres se font, des idées s’échangent et des projets porteurs se dessinent.Vous savez comme moi que nous traversons une grave crise écologique. Cette évidence est connue et malgré tout, les constats d’échec en environnement se multiplient. Le choix du mot « révolution » dans le titre de la conférence prend ici tout son sens. Notre avenir commun passera par de nouvelles avenues et pour nous y mener, nous avons besoin de le penser en dehors des cadres établis, en confrontant les idées reçues et les modèles en place. Les conférences comme celles-ci constituent des moments privilégiés où nous pouvons discuter ensemble d’alternatives fortes et probantes. DEAR PARTICIPANTS, It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the 2017 Canadian Society for Ecological Economy's biennial conference, organized jointly with the Economics for the Anthropocene initiative. For more than a year, the Conference Planning Committee, has been working with the boards of CANSEE and E4A to make this event a success. Since the beginning of this adventure, our goal has been to make sure that the conference can becomes a showcase for research and reflection in our discipline, but also a time for new encounters, exchanges of ideas and a place of inspiration for promising new projects.Today we are going through a serious ecological crisis. The evidence has been known for several decades and despite everything, our failures to manage the environment continue to mount. The choice of the word "revolution" in the title of this conference takes on its full meaning here. Our common future will push us into new avenues and force us think outside established frameworks, confronting many of our well-accepted ideas and models. Conferences like these are special moments when we can come together to discuss strong and convincing alternatives to these changes. I would like to thank you all for your participation in the conference. Evolution and revolution are both urgently needed in our time –the Anthropocene. And Ecological Economics can and must deliver both. The evolution is revealed in careful learning and applying methods like systems dynamics to understanding how living systems can thrive and flourish. The revolution is found in the emerging field of Ecological Macro-economics where growth is questioned and set aside as the principal goal. Beyond this is the deep reimagining of the human compelled by the cosmic scientific paradigm which bore fruit in the last decades of the 20th century. We are pleased to have you join us in Montreal as we focus on respect for life’s commonwealth.

Welcome to the 11th Biennial conference of the Canadian Society for Ecological Economics (CANSEE), where we will be focusing on Economies in an Age of Limits: A Time for (R)evolution. We are thrilled to be hosting this conference with Economics for the Anthropocene (E4A), a graduate training and research partnership between McGill University, York University and the University of Vermont, which is designed to improve how the social sciences and humanities connect to ecological and economic realities and challenges of our time. We are living in a most crucial time. Political and environmental events are causing many of us to acknowledge the need to redefine ecological and social justice. CANSEE is committed to developing new approaches to understanding our economy, its interdependence with biophysical systems and issues of social justice that our current economic system is inadequate to address. To this end, we hope to engage you in discussion, collaboration and debate regarding different visions and tools for fuelling change our five main themes. CONFERENCE HOSTS HÔTES DE LA CONFÉRENCECANADIAN SOCIETY FOR ECOLOGICAL ECONOMICS Recognizing that economies are embedded in and dependent upon the ecosphere, and that economic activities are the most evident and pervasive aspect of that dependence, the mandate of CANSEE/SCANÉÉ is to develop and promote understanding of the nature and implications of this dependence through research, education, policy analysis, communication, and other means. The purposes of CANSEE/SCANÉÉ are to:

/ Foster transdisciplinary discourse among the social and natural sciences;

/ Provide a Canadian node for activities in ecological economics;

/ Research and disseminate information globally, nationally and locally on policies for sustainability; and

/ Promote education, graduate research and research funding in ecological economics.

ECONOMICS FOR THE ANTHROPOCENE PARTNERSHIP Economics for the Anthropocene (E4A) is a graduate training and research partnership designed to improve how the social sciences and humanities connect to ecological and economic realities and challenges of the Anthropocene. Overarching goals are to articulate, teach and apply a new understanding of human-Earth relationships grounded in and informed by the insights of contemporary science. For this reason, the LSRC brings together researchers from the Faculty of Arts and Science, the John Molson School of Business, the Faculty of Fine Arts, and the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science. When the LSRC was first approached by the Canadian Society for Ecological Economics and Economics for the Anthropocene to host this conference, we were immediately struck by the synergy between this conference and our goals as a research centre. ABOUT THE CONFERENCE À PROPOS DE LA CONFÉRENCE

In an age where our Earth limits are increasingly perceptible, how can our economic systems take them into account? By recognizing the need to redefine ecological and social justice, this conference aims to highlight the current ecological and social challenges, the different visions and tools that fuel change, as well as paths to be undertaken to transform our economic system.

CONFERENCE THEMESBIOPHYSICAL LIMITS

One of the main objectives of ecological economics is to re-center economies within the ecological limits of the Earth. This conference invites you to discuss the state of these limits, the capacity of our planet to support our economic activities, and the ecological challenges specific to the Anthropocene. The subjects suggested for this theme are: the study of planetary boundaries, the study of socio-ecological metabolism, material flow analysis, case studies on the effects of anthropogenic activities, and on multiple scales, among others. The objective of this theme is to better understand the ecological challenges of the Anthropocene.

À l’ère où les limites de nos ressources sont de plus en plus perceptibles, comment nos systèmes économiques peuvent-ils tenir compte des limites biophysiques de la planète ? Devant la nécessité de redéfinir une justice écologique et sociale, la conférence aura pour objectif de mettre en lumière les défis écologiques et sociaux actuels, les différentes visions et les outils qui alimentent le changement, ainsi que les chantiers à entreprendre pour une transformation de notre système économique.

THÈMES DE LA CONFÉRENCE

LIMITES BIOPHYSIQUES

L’un des objectifs principaux de l’économie écologique est de recentrer les économies à l’intérieur des limites écologiques de la Terre. Les thèmes suggérés pour cette thématique sont : l’étude des limites planétaires, l’étude des métabolismes socio-écologiques, l’analyse des flux matériels des économies, des études de cas sur l’effet des activités anthropogéniques, et ce sur de multiples échelles, entre autres. L’objectif de cette thématique est de mieux comprendre les limites écologiques et les défis présents dans l’anthropocène.


ÉQUITÉ, JUSTICE SOCIALE, ET BIEN COMMUN Les défis sociaux et les défis écologiques se combinent dans l’Anthropocène pour constituer un type nouveau de crise d’une complexité accrue. Nous vous invitions à discuter l’état de ces limites, la capacité de notre planète à soutenir nos activités économiques, et les défis écologiques propres à l’anthropocène. Les thèmes suggérés incluent les effets de l’inégalité économique, l’étude des conflits socio-écologiques, le racisme environnemental et les injustices climatiques, le néocolonialisme et les impacts de l’extractivisme chez les peuples autochtones et autres communautés marginalisées, entre autres. Nous souhaitons explorer la relation entre les crises écologiques et sociales pour dégager les causes structurelles qui les caractérisent.

MOUVEMENTS ET DISCOURS ALTERNATIFS Un avenir durable reste à imaginer et celui-ci est soutenu par des mouvements, des visions et des discours alternatifs. La conférence invite les participants à partager des études de cas sur les alternatives existantes mises en œuvre au Canada et dans le monde entier. Nous souhaitons également nous pencher sur les visions novatrices d’un avenir socialement juste et écologiquement viable. De plus, cette thématique nous permet de nous questionner sur comment différentes épistémologies et connaissances offrent différents récits et constats sur les l’économie et les relations socio-écologiques. Finalement, nous vous invitons à réfléchir sur le rôle des économistes écologiques (et de la discipline) dans la redéfinition des relations entre les peuples et l’environnement.

EQUITY, SOCIAL JUSTICE AND THE COMMONS Our second theme will be devoted to identifying the social challenges and crises that are deeply linked with the ecological challenges of the Anthropocene. Suggested topics include the effects of economic inequality, the study of socio-ecological conflicts, environmental racism and climate injustice, neo-colonialism and the impacts of extractivism on Indigenous peoples and other marginalized communities, among others. We want to explore the relationship between ecological and social crises to identify the structural causes that characterize them.

ALTERNATIVE MOVEMENTS AND DISCOURSES Thirdly, this conference aims to present the movements, visions and discourses that help us imagine the alternative and sustainable future. We invite participants to share case studies on existing alternatives in Canada and around the world. We also want to look at the innovative visions of a just and environmentally sustainable future. Moreover, this theme allows us to question how different epistemology and knowledge offer different approaches, observations and directions on the type of socio-ecological relationships we want. Finally, we invite you to reflect on the role of ecological economists (and the discipline) in redefining relationships between people and the environment.


FINANCE, MARCHÉS ET MACROÉCONOMIE ÉCOLOGIQUE Dans sa quête visant à ré-encastrer nos systèmes socio-économiques dans leurs limites biophysiques, l’économie écologique n’a pas encore développé une vision commune quant au rôle essentiel joué par la monnaie et la finance. Des investissements colossaux et potentiellement atypiques sont nécessaires au financement de la transition. Dans le même temps, la tendance intrinsèque au secteur financier à s’émanciper de dimensions économiques, sociales et environnementales, renforce la fragilité systémique. Ces défis sont abordés depuis des perspectives variées et souvent divergentes, allant de l’évolution de la régulation financière et des politiques monétaires et fiscales, à l’idée d’une révolution dans la nature même de la monnaie. Tandis qu’une approche cohérente reste à trouver, les crises actuelles nous rappellent qu’il est urgent de transformer notre rapport à la monnaie, la finance et la dette, alors que nous entrons dans une ère d’incertitude généralisée et de faible substituabilité.

LES VOIES DU CHANGEMENT : OUTILS ET STRATÉGIES Finalement, un aspect de la conférence sera consacré à la cartographie des propositions susceptibles d’induire le changement recherché. Comment pouvons-nous, en pratique, sortir des crises socio-écologiques que nous traversons et atteindre la révolution économique? Les thèmes suggérés pour cette session sont: la théorie du changement, les transformations socio-écologiques, les études de transformation critique, la gestion de la transition, l’engagement avec les mouvements sociaux, entre autres. Il reste encore beaucoup de chemin à parcourir. Nous pouvons initier une réflexion collective sur le rôle du milieu académique dans le processus de transformation : souhaitons-nous devenir des agents de changement ? Si oui, comment pouvons-nous être plus stratégiques dans notre travail et nos collaborations afin de maximiser notre impact?

FINANCE, MARKETS AND ECOLOGICAL MACROECONOMICS In its aim to re-embed the global socio-economic system within its biophysical boundaries, the field of ecological economics has yet to develop a common vision of the critical role played by money and finance. Massive and potentially atypical investments are needed for the transition. At the same time, the financial sector’s inherent tendency to emancipate itself from economic, social and environmental dimensions, is increasing systemic fragility. These challenges are addressed through various and often divergent perspectives, from the evolution of financial regulation and monetary and fiscal policies to a revolution in the very nature of money. While a common ground is yet to be found, the current crises call for an urgent transformation of our relationship with money, finance and debt as we enter an age of rampant uncertainty and weak substitutability.

PATHWAYS TO CHANGE: TOOLS AND STRATEGIES Finally, the conference will also be devoted to mapping our proposals on how to create change. How, in practice, can we emerge from the socio-ecological crises we are going through and how can we imagine the economic revolution we need? Suggested topics for this session are: theories of change, socio-ecological transformations, critical transformation studies, transition management, engagement with social movements, among others. We still have a long way to go. We invite conference participants to think collectively about our role as academics in a process of transformation: do we want to become agents of change? If so, how can we be more strategic in our work and collaborations to maximize our impact.
