Joining Hearts and Handshas had a very busy andproductive 2007. Due to yourgenerosity and prayers, wehave been able to accomplishmuch in Nyanza and WesternProvinces in the LakeVictoria region of WesternKenya.

Last February we visited atown called Timau near Nyerinorth of Nairobi. There westayed with Sister Joanne ofthe Franciscan Order whereshe is the head of a schoolthat teaches pre-schoolchildren as well as seniorcitizens how to read andwrite. It was in Timau thatwe were able to get a goodidea of how to run a microtailoring shop. Later on in thejourney, we carried that infor-mation to Mbaka OromoPrimary School in Maseno,Kenya for the school commu-nity's tailoring IGLA(Income Generating LearningActivity).

One of our major efforts onthis trip was to establishIGLAs at all of our schools.We are happy to report thatwe are in various stages ofcompletion at three sites. Thehanda school communitychose horticulture and arealready harvesting tomatoesand kale. Lufumbo andhanda are currently buildingshelters for two goat breedingstations and planting crops tofeed the dairy goats. This

initiative is called SIDEBU.The SHIEBU cooperative willbe producing goat milk by thebeginning of the year.

We were also able to visitChrist the King Parish inKatito, south of Kisumu.Christ the King is the futurelocation of Hannah's Hope.Hannah's Hope is an EarlyChildhood Center in honor ofHannah Congdon and herfriends Katie Shirley, BaileyGoodman, Meredith McClureand Sara Monnat.

Off of Lake Victoria is aremote island named Mageta.where we were able to see thedevastation to the families ofthose left behind by the deathof relatives due to HIV/AIDS.Wernet a tiny little girl whograduated from Standard 8and was unable to attendschool due to the inabilityto pay for school fees.Everlyn showed us her reportcard; a brilliant mind whocouldn't further hereducation. One of our travelmates, Christine Buckley

couldn't let this happen and isnow sponsoring Everlyn forher 4 years of high school.Events like this happen everyday in Kenya. The needs areso I!reat and your kindnessI!oesso far.

We visited all of our 37scholarship students,supervised schoolconstruction on three sites andmade connections withorganizations such as KisumuChildren's Remand Homethat is a safe-haven forchildren who are found on thestreets of Kisumu.
