Spec. Sprite Racing. By Gary Emery

Gary Emery raced his Spec F Production Austin~Healey Sprite at Texas World Speedway September 8-9. Only 3 SFP cars competed in the 4 races but they shared the 2.9 mile, 15 turn track with a variety of historic cars including Elva Formula Juniors, two 1959 Austin~Healey 3000s, a 1935 MG N Special, a 1961 Morgan and a 1965 Alfa Spyder Veloce among others.

The weekend started off ominously when the transmission of Eddie Dick’s Texas Flag car failed during test and tune on Friday. Eddie bought a transmission at the track and the three SFP drivers, Gary, Eddie and Wes Wigginton pulled the engine and installed the new transmission in time for the first race Saturday morning.

Saturday’s approximately 20 mile races set the pattern for the weekend. Gary came in second to Eddie in the first race by a difference of 0.074 seconds. There were several lead changes during the race and on one, Gary came perilously close to brushing a newly restored Devin Healey. The second race was also hotly contested with Gary crossing the finish line for first place only 1.521 seconds ahead of Eddie.

The outcome of Sunday’s first race was identical to Saturday’s; Eddie won by 0.074 seconds. Sunday’s second race was the points race and promised some drama that didn’t materialize. Gary started mid-grid behind Eddie but passed him on the 3rd turn of the first lap and never looked back. Eddie and Wes tried hard to catch him and spun on laps 5 and 6 respectively. Final result: Gary, Wes and Eddie 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Gary’s total time for this 20 mile race was 17:01.705 for an average speed of 72.611 MPH and a margin of victory of 31.705 seconds.

Next race, Hallett Motor Racing Circuit, Hallett Oklahoma, October 12-13.

Final note, Gary’s Sprite race car may be for sale (absolutely according to his wife; no way according to his daughters) because he bought another one last week. It's a one-of-one 1957 Arnold Special sports racer built and raced in Canada in its early life during the 60’s. It has a tube frame with a hand-formed aluminum body and is powered by a Triumph TR3 engine with dual Weber carburetors. Gary’s hoping it will get him into races like the Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca. Gary made a wise decision. - Editor

James McKenzie offers forth. More of his mini reconstruction.12 & 6 Hr. Chumpcar Races St. Louis 9/21&22. By Bill Fisher

! Well..... We Did It! We not only finished the 12 & 6 hr. races, but - we basically used NO oil!Mark's peripheral oil cooler and and oil filter locations plus, an Accusump of 1.5 qts. kept it cool and alive. Our Tr7 uses a 1.6 Mazda Miata engine & trans. with 2 TR3 SU’s insted of fuel injection.

It didn't hurt that Don Norby, Harry Price & Mark Canaday put in 1hour 20 minute driving stints, I put in 1 hr. In the dark Mark drove a heroic 1hour 45 minutes and putting in the same tight numbers he ran during the day! And that was after having very few hrs. of sleep in the bed of his pick-up!

We were 10th out of 24 on Sat. and 11th of 21 on Sun. Most ahead of us were the usual BMW's & Nissan V-6's.The Triata MX-7 was the slowest car on the track, measured by lap times and lap speeds. However, we were one of the more reliable cars - only spending an extra 8 or 10 minutes in the pits re-hanging a loose and very hot exhaust system.

A fine time was had by all. Team Rat Patrol is planning a 3 race season for 2014. Contact Harry or Mark if you would like to race the TRazda. We'll try to make it a bit faster next year. Harry and Mark keep the driver group small to maximize individual seat time.– Bill

Ohio Morgan Owners Group in Dayton 9/21. By James Mckenzie

On Thursday Sept 19th I took off for Dayton, Ohio to the OH MOG fall meeting. The Ohio Morgan owners have get togethers in different parts of the state throughout the year. Here was a chance to see lots of Morgans and take pictures, learn a lot (hopefully) that will help with the restoration of mine. I got to ride in a Morgan for the first time, in a 57 4/4 and a 66 4/4, both four seaters. The 57 had a TR4 engine, upgraded from the TR3 that came with it. The 66 had a smaller Ford engine. I got to drive the 66 on the last part of a 62 mile rally on Saturday afternoon. There was quite a range of cars and they had different engines, from the TR3, TR4, 1500 Ford, 1600 Ford, 3.8 and 4.0 Rover V8 and a newer Ford V6. Also there was a new three wheeler with a V twin motorcycle engine. Ohio Morgan owners came from all around the state and a few from outside, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Indiana.

On Friday morning there were several of us that got to go over to see an import garage whose owner raced cars and collected cars. What an amazing bunch of cars. We went inside by his office and there were several there, a 1600 twin cam MGA coupe, MG TD, Porsche race car, an original 64 289 Cobra, 265 Ferrari, another Ferrari, 31 Cadillac, 35 Buggatti and a Amphicar. We enjoyed looking at them and taking pictures then went outside to leave. Then we were told we could go over and look at the car collection. We thought we had, but we walked across the parking lot and the door opened to a large metal building, we went in and our jaws dropped. Inside were perfectly parked two rows of cars, in a spotless building. Jags, Aston Martins, Alfa's, Bently, Austin Healey, BMW, MG, one Bugeye, and right by the door a Mazda Miata race car with a 550hp Ford engine, more Porsche race cars, a stunning collection. Some one asked later which our favorite was out of the lot, we couldn't answer. There was a 49 Alfa that won a class at 2008 Pebble Beach. A Jaguar 120 drophead coupe that was just stunning. I haven't ever seen such a nice collection of cars, all of which were in perfect condition and driveable. The weekend went well, I learned a lot and met some nice folks. Morgans are a little like mini's, no two are alike. Also seems like most Mog owners have mini's also!

BIG thanks to Charlie & Melanie Hoch, Mark & Vicki Canaday, and BillFisher for their assistance in coordinating the Saturday night event, aswell as full set up and management of the Driver's Rodeo!

For those of you who were able to participate, THANK YOU!  Your supportmakes this event possible year after year.

The planning committee is excited to set the wheels in motion for nextyear and hope to see many more of you there.

Any and all comments/suggestions are welcome!

I am attaching a group photo taken at a picnic held in Shawnee Mission Park on September 14th 2013. We were celebrating the 31st Anniversary of the founding of the Austin-Healey Club of Kansas City. Fourteen Healeys were present including Gary & Molly Emery's BN7 and my BT7. Unfortunately John Zumbrunnen (BT7) was unable to attend the picnic. The KC Austin-Healey club meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month. If any of our members would like to attend one of their meetings they should contact me.– Ken Bishop

Club Minutes by Susan McKenzie;

MEETING OF September 3, 2013 at Conroy’s Pub

Allen called the meeting to order. There were 22 in attendance. Alan mentioned that he and a few others in the club attended the KC All British Car Show held at Zona Rosa again this year. The event on Saturday night of the car show had the cars out into the mall area and with the public, which was well received. There were 120+ in attendance this year.

James reported that Rowan Green has invited the club to visit his garage. A front-page article about Rowan and his wife, Tanya, recently ran in the Lawrence Journal World. It would be a great place for the club to visit, and is north of Lawrence, in the Perry area.

A Rallye meeting will be called soon. The cost per car is $20.00 and the cost per dinner is $12.00. Cars can begin checking in at 8:30 am on October 13th and the first car will be released at 11:00 am. Mileage will be checked at the beginning and end, with no GPS permitted. Cars must have a pilot and co-pilot and there will be questions that teams need to pay attention to.

The next meeting is on October 1st at Conroy’s Pub.

The Lawrence Region Antique Automobile Club of America car show is on Sunday, October 6th at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. It’s a free show – let’s try to have a good showing for our club and win a participation prize this year!

Several members drove their British cars to this meeting, including Gary and Molly’s racing Sprite, John’s Healey, James Ortiz’ MGBGT, Bill’s TR4, Dave and Debbie’s MGB, and James and Susan’s Bugeye. Sorry if I missed anyone!

The change in venue to Conroy’s Pub seemed to be well-received. The food was good, our meeting room was large enough (complete with bathrooms) and the service was much improved.

Respectfully submitted,

Susan McKenzie
