Making Disciples Who Make Disciples Go Getter’s News From Your Pastor

Lent, a season of preparation by many Christians around the world to observe and celebrate the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, began Wednesday, March 6. Most Baptists do not observe Lent but many Christians particularly Methodists, Lutherans, Episcopalians and other denominations do. I have found that observing Lent helps me to focus on the real meaning of “Easter”. It helps me better understand and appreciate the sacrifice God made by allowing His own Son to receive the full penalty and punishment for all our sin. It also helps me better understand and appreciate the love God has for me (and others) in that “even while we were still sinners Christ died for us”! As pastor Stephen has been preaching a series on “Spiritual Formation”, I wanted to invite you to join our brothers and sisters in observing Lent (in whatever way God leads you) over the next few weeks as we approach Easter. One way to observe Lent, which will aid your own personal spiritual formation, is to practice “spiritual disciplines”. Spiritual disciplines include prayer, fasting, Bible study, meditating on God’s Word, solitude and worship. I will be sharing more about “spiritual disciplines” when I preach for pastor Stephen next Sunday. I hope you will be there and learn how you might add some of these “tools” to your spiritual toolbox and grow in your personal spiritual formation. I pray that God will grow your faith as you focus on Him during Lent! Immeasurably More!

Ephesians 3:14-21 Lee Howell, Family Ministry Pastor

I have been reminded lately that there are a lot of people around me, in my family and in my Deer Park family, that are experiencing hard times. So many people are battling illnesses, family issues, grief, and countless other difficult circumstances. Each Wednesday night in Prayer Meeting we take time to go over the many names on our prayer list and normally several more are added before we pray together. Each Wednesday I am overwhelmed by the needs of those on our prayer list. With that in mind, I want to share two verses of Scripture that I read this week that will help us as we pray for and comfort others.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 teach us, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” The Message version uses the words “hard times” instead of “affliction.” God has comforted and will comfort each one of us as we experience “hard times” and He expects us to comfort others with the same comfort He has given us. I pray that you and I will recognize God’s comfort and praise Him for it, and that we will recognize those who need comforting and show it to them in the same way it has been shown to us.

I love being a part of a church family that prays for one another and comforts one another. I pray that we will take the teaching of Scripture and use it as we minister to each other.

I Love Being Your Pastor! Stephen

Hope you didn’t miss our meeting this past Tuesday. It was a fun evening with a great gospel music program by Tony Stephens and Family.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at 6:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall. We have invited Jack Sehrt to bring us his spontaneous songs and jokes. Jack is Membership Chairman at Bethany United Methodist Church in Summerville. This should be a fun time for all. As usual bring a dish to con-tribute to our “potluck” dinner.

The ministry kit item – For this meeting, we plan to support the “Prisoner Packets” by bringing writing tablets no larger than 5”x8” (make sure they do not have any wire binders or clips, and no composition books).

Travel News – Below are three trips we are planning for 2019 through Carolina Tours. We hope that you will consider traveling with us on one or more of the trips.

>May 9, 2019 – For those signed up for the day trip to Flat Rock Playhouse & Hendersonville to see “Country Royalty” showcasing the music of Patsy Cline & Hank Williams, you should have already paid for this outing. If not, please call Carolina Tours (803-356-3000) now to make your payment. Cost: $125 (was due March 15th).

>August 5, 2019 – “Taste of Greenville” which is a one day trip to Greenville. We will have a guide in Greenville who will take us to some great places where we will taste some of Greenville’s best and most popular foods. These are very popular trips through Carolina Tours, and we thought you would enjoy experiencing one of these “taste” trips. We presently have 16 signed up and we need a minimum of 25 to make it a “Go”. Cost: $145 which is due by June 15th.

>November 13-16, 2019 – Motor Coach trip to Orlando to visit “The Holy Land Experience” and other attractions. This will be our Christmas outing for this year. We need a minimum of 25 and we presently have only 10 signed up which puts this trip in jeopardy. If you haven't signed up yet, please do so soon so we can continue to plan for this trip. Cost: $653 pp/double. $200 deposit due by May 1st with final payment due by September 15, 2019.

Contact Fran Bath (843-572-1862) or Judy Rush (843-553-1844) for questions about any of the trips.

Mark your calendars for church-wide workdays for Operation Christmas Child. These workdays are scheduled for the 5th

Saturdays of the month to help count, sort and organize! Those dates are March 30th, June 29th and August 31st

from 9AM-12PM.

Also, be on the lookout for the donations ideas for March: cotton fabric with lace, buttons, thread, scissors and fleece by the yard.

Please contact Cindy Watts at [email protected] for more information.
