THE BAROQUE ACADEMY is a program for emerging professional singers and instrumentalists who want to develop their understanding and perfor-mance of Baroque repertoire in a high-powered musi-cal environment. Immerse yourself in 17th and 18th century music and be part of the fabulous community at the Amherst Early Music Festival. Singers choose between two programs within the Baroque Academy. Instrumentalists work closely with leading performers on Baroque style, technique, and ornamentation as they rehearse for concerts at the end of the week. Pitch is A=415.

BAROQUE OPERA PROJECT: Jean-Baptiste Lully’s Cadmus et Hermione (1673). This tragédie lyrique features thwarted high-born lovers, gods and goddesses attempting to control their liaison, and comic servants with amorous designs of their own. Roles for sopranos or higher mezzos, coun-tertenors, tenors, and baritones. Fully costumed and staged with Baroque orchestra and historical dance. Directed by Drew Minter. Rehearsals for singers begin Saturday, July 7. Performance Friday, July 13.

VOCAL SOLOIST PROGRAM: Staged Baroque Cantatas with chamber ensemble. Directed by Jason McStoots with Aaron Sheehan. Focus on style and diction. Instruction in 17th-century stagecraft and effective rendering of arias and recitatives with ornamentation and Baroque gesture. Repertoire by Charpentier, Clérembault, Campra, and others. All vocal ranges welcome. Rehearsals begin July 9, performance Saturday, July 14.
