President’s Message

Dear Rotarians:

A very special thank you to all Rotary Club of Greenville Charity Golf Tournament Committee members, sponsors, and players who contributed to the success of our first charity golf tournament! Jeff Fuller provided leadership for the tournament, and we will thank him and members of committee at our next meeting. Funds were raised for Alzheimer’s research (C.A.R.T), End Polio Now, and Rotary Charities! Yes, I was really excited because of my personal experience with Alzheimer’s and polio! I was a witness at the Hole in One, and I enjoyed greeting each team. Despite a short but torren-tial downpour, we had a lot of fun! At each of the remaining programs for this Rotary year, you will hear a presentation on one of our service projects, including international service, the character education program- EarlyAct FirstKnight, tutoring at the Greenville Literacy Association, youth services, Rotary

grants, and the Rotary “Service Above Self” Scholarship. Sarah Beattie reported on the Read-to-Me special project--Josh the Otter Literacy and Water Safety Program--at our last meeting. The theme for Rotary this year is “Engage Rotary, Change Lives,” and Rotarians have been sharing their time, talents, skills, and expertise to change lives through our service projects! This is an excellent time to invite a prospective member to visit our club not only to hear a great speaker but also to learn about our service projects. We need to bring in 8 new members by June 30th, 2014. If you know a prospective member, please be sure that he/she has an application. We are close to achieving our goal of 35 new members this year, and with your help, we will reach that goal. If you are not engaged with a service project, we will inform you during these presentations about how to become involved! Judith S. Prince, President Rotary Club of Greenville

Brock Koonce won a new golf bag at the Rotary Club of Greenville Charity Golf Tournament!

Jeff Fuller, Chair of the Inaugural Rotary Club of Greenville Charity Golf Tournament

Recent purchase of resource materials both in print and electronic on-line seats through a Rotary District Grant are getting rave reviews from Rotarian tutors and students alike. Math, reading, writing, social studies and science study materials were purchased, complemented by 25 on-line study seats that allow students the opportunity to do independent study in preparation for the new 2014 GED test. Because the GED test encompassed significant changes in content and delivery (on-line testing only), it required all new training materials and made computer literacy training a necessity.

Greenville Literacy will serve over 1,400 students in 2014 so books are purchased as “classroom sets”. This allows the resources to be used by multiple tutors and classes. To make classroom sets more effective, four small camera/projectors were purchased that allow tutors to project a single page onto a white board for all to see easily. The tutor can then write on the whiteboard over what is projected to facilitate learning. Feedback about the effectiveness of this new technology in the classroom has been swift and positive. Several Rotarian tutor have tested the camera/projector and found it to be extremely helpful. Also included in the materials purchased were advanced English language workbooks and teacher study guides for ESL classes. These materials are targeted at students who have become proficient enough in English to begin

transitioning into the ABE classes, studying for their GED test. GLA works in concert with the Department of Adult Education to transition ESL students into ABE classes. Their goals are either job attainment or acceptance into higher education. Greenille Literacy is thrilled with these new resources and places a high value on the on-going partnership with Rotary Clubs in Greenville. Rotarians who tutor students one-on-one or teach classes, frequently share their success stories and talk enthusiastically about benefits they receive personally from the connections made with GLA students.

Andre Jamar is a long time member of our club (1983) and lives permanently in Belgium and makes up there, but retains membership here. He visits us once or twice a year. He broke his hip last year and just had an operation on his other leg. He was moving very slowly, but determined to come to our club meeting today. That is dedication!
