JOIN IN LAKELAND!
Publix – one of the largest supermarket corporations in the country, whose purchasing power could strengthen these human rights gains immensely – has instead stubbornly refused to join this partnership for more than three years. For far too long, Publix has turned its back on the farmworkers who pick its tomatoes. This March 3-17, join us as farmworkers and allies embark on a 200-mile march from Fort Myers to Publix Headquarters in Lakeland to demand that Publix support the fundamental human rights taking root today in Florida's fields.
For decades, Florida's farmworkers faced sub-poverty wages, wage theft, sexual harassment, and, in the most extreme cases, modern-day slavery in order to harvest the food on our plates.
Today, however, a new day is dawning in Florida's fields. An historic partnership among farmworkers, Florida tomato growers, and eleven major food corporations – such as McDonald's, Burger King, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's – is building a new Florida tomato industry that advances the human rights and dignity of farmworkers. Though many challenges remain, this promising new partnership has become a model for social responsibility in the US produce industry.
