Men’s Basketball program is to utilize our actions

and words to be established as an ideal

intercollegiate basketball program by exemplifying

the standards of a championship organization in

our various communities, in the classroom, and on

the basketball court. We intend to achieve national

status as a program through continued hard work

and dedication, while being committed to the integrity

Since 1998, JWCC’s main campus has grown significantly. In 2002, two new buildings, approximately 103,000

square feet in size, were opened, offering the latest in technology in classrooms, labs and support areas.

A fourth major building for the main

campus, the Paul Heath Community Education and Fine Arts Center, opened in the fall 2004. This 52,000-square

foot

facility houses the College’s community education and adult education/literacy programs, the workforce

development center, the fine arts program, and the Adams County RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program).

Academic Success Program

We take pride in our accomplishments in the

classroom. Our team sets a yearly goal of a 3.0

cumulative team GPA that we calculate at the end

of each semester. Our academic success

program utilizes three things:

1. Study tables throughout the season.

2. Grade check forms distributed twice a semester.

3. Constant contact and interaction with our faculty.

John Wood Community College has an active Student Support Services Department

that is available for tutoring and study skill sessions.

Good players make basketball plays. They understand when to be aggressive and

when to pick their spots. Good players are instinctive in their game, yet understand

the entire system. Good players defend each play like it is their last and protect the

basketball at every opportunity. Good players are tough minded, coachable, and

want to play within a system that allows 5 players on the floor to play as one.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING“Win the point of contact!” is a phrase often heard in individual workouts and team practices. John Wood basketball puts time, effort,

and tremendous pride in their commitment to the weight room – adding and sustaining strength.

Using a year round commitment to ‘power training’ and speed training, developing an athlete’s ability to transfer weight room power to

the basketball floor, JWCC athletes become accustomed to the weight training right away.

INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENTHead Coach Brad Hoyt and his coaching staff are dedicated to developing each student-athlete through small group, individual, and

team workouts. Individual and small group attention is a constant throughout the entire year and in all 4 seasons – preseason,

regular season, postseason, and summer.

Defensive breakdown, shooting, ball handling, passing, and several other skills are developed throughout the year as a result of the

dedication of both the coaching staff and the players of John Wood basketball.

TIME: Everything is either a TEACHING or COMPETITION Drill

12:30-12:35 5 man weave – 3-on-2, 2-on-1, 1-on-1

12:35-12:45 3 Man Pressure Pass Drill and Ball—You—Man Drill. Emphasis is on using peripheral vision

and close out with both hands high.

12:45-1:05 Offense/Defense Breakdown – Coach Hoyt with defense, 3 on 3 quarter court

Coach Witherspoon with offense, 5-on-0 situations

1:05-1:20 Defensive/Rebounding Breakdown-Coach Hoyt 2 on 2 deny wing with help and rotations.

Coach Witherspoon -2 on 2 block out toughness drill

1:20-1:30 4 on 4 shell-Progressive-stationary, iron curtain- cutters-screeners

1:30-1:45 4 on 4 on 4 to 4 points (losers run suicide)

1:45-1:50 3 minute free throws

1:50-2:05 5/2 Block Out and Transition Drill. (losers run suicide)
