D BYNNCLUBSJANUARY 10 TO SATURDAY, JANUAR BY TCANBERRA RUNNERS CLUB51 st Ludwig Rabina’s Crackenback Challenge 2019

For the first time in 51 Editions of Australia’s steepest race, this iconic event started at 8.30am on day 2 Sunday 13th of January of the week long Fun and Fitness Festival. The unique challenge is becoming a little tougher with many more bike track courses containing deep ruts scattered across the uphill race. The 8.30am start is cooler with the sun behind you and calm conditions, although dewy grass to contend with, but as everyone knows nothing would stop any of the tough minded and steely eyed competitors who have ever taken on the unique and sensational experience the challenge offers each year. This year’s race attracted a star studded field with world stair running champion Mark Bourne, Olympian Martin Dent, and many world and National Mountain representatives, testing themselves on the high altitude torture course. The legend Dave (Crackers) Osmond, the winner of 16 editions, starting in 1991 with his first win, looked in fine fettle, his longevity is most impressive. The race got under way with 62 determined combatants, Mark Bourne, Marty Dent, James Minto, Crackers Osmond, Richard Sarkies and the consistent Armstrong brothers all charging off like there was no tomorrow with the leading females Elizabeth Humphries and Ashleigh Goldstein chasing hard just behind. Going up the optional grass ski runs or the basically straight up under the seated chairlift often becomes tactical as track surface can vary from year to year. Mark Bourne decided his course as leader with most following him like the pied piper, although no bag pipes were to be seen, the next section is very steep and relentless up to the Kareela Hut restaurant with the equally tough section up through the rocks with the chair lift riders in full voice, giving the much needed encouragement to all competitors or maybe (numbskulls). The last bit section to just short of the Eagles Nest Restaurant, 1980m above the sea level is always daunting but very satisfying as the quads and heart take a battering, again Mark Bourne thrived on the steep challenge wining comfortably (if that is the right word) from Martin Dent, James Minto and Dave (Crackers) Osmond who apart from his 16 wins has never finished worse that 4 th in any Crackenback Challenge. Mark Bourne has now run five times since 2013 and won all of them with his 2013 winning time of 19.07 ranking him 6th fastest, all time behind Paul Crake and Dave Osmond who hold all the other 5 times, Elizabeth Humphries again was extremely impressive being fastest female finishing 8th outright, like last year’s win, although last year’s effort was incredibly sensational because she moved up to no 7 all time, pushing Julie Quin 2005 winner back one place. Ashleigh Goldstein had a very good run for second, several minutes faster than last year. Melissa Clarke 3rd, running 33secs faster than last year, again like the men’s event the women’s field was strong with 4 time winner Elisha Bell managing 5 th place this year.Tell all your friends and fellow runners to have ago next year to see if they can crack Crackenback like the phenomenal 62 humans who did it this year, well done to all, what a ripper. Thanks again to Lois Singer and Mal Nicholson, two of our life members who have sponsored the event for the several years.

Thredbo 6k Fun Run Sunday 12 th January 2019

Due to the expansion of tracks and now very dominant activity of the mountain bike riding in Thredbo, our 6k fun run was re scheduled to 3pm on day 1 of the National fun and fitness week. This allowed our Crackenback Challenge to run at 8.30am on Sunday day2 before the mountain bikes are allowed to start. The consensus of opinion amongst our people is this was a great idea anyway as Thredbo has changed so much in the last 20 years, this year’s race although run in hot conditions would have been worse if the 11am start was still on. Again hundreds of runners, joggers, walkers and pram pushers faced the starter with some hoping to lose a few kilos after the festive season.A group of about 8 runners soon broke clear by Friday Flat with the leading females, Ashleigh Goldstein and Elisha Bell pressing their go fast buttons not far behind. Rounding the bottom turn around at 1500m, 2010 winner Chris Truscott decided it was time to put the pressure on. Chris was looking great and obviously enjoying himself, with all the slower competitors cheering him on as they realised how far ahead of them he was. As he flew down and back for his second lap, he continued to increase his lead, it might have been an optical illusion, but it appeared he was travelling that fast, you could see the smoke coming off his shoes on the hot bitumen road surface. His effort was even more meritorious as he had to keep aware of the extra January holiday makers, day trippers, bike and car traffic. It’s worth mentioning 20years ago, Chris ran 19.39 to be 38th all time in a list of 102 runners to break the benchmark of 21mins. This list has many Olympians, National and State Champions that have competed at a very elite level in athletics, triathlon, cycling or swimming with great distinction.Travis Ey and Pat (the boundary umpire) Jackson, dead heated for 2nd in a close tussle. The Armstrong brothers were next, with Ryan beating brother Chad. Daryl Read was 6th in a P.B, position and time.Ashleigh Goldstein was the first female in the tough conditions and track circumstances, with a P.B. and 9th outright for a superb impressive run. The consistent Elisha bell was 2nd with Annabel Scott 3rd, with a P.B. There were many P.B.’s, too many to list. Well done to all who had a go and had the fun it was meant to be.Thanks to Margaret O’Donovan for her cash prizes and sponsorship and to Phil Aungles and his team of helpers in staging the event.Great to see Rosie Sinkora (Longstaff) running, who is a Thredbo Hall of Famer and long time Kossy Classic and Fun Runner with multiple course records.

Review of Brian Lenton’s ”Thredbo: 50 Years Running 1968 – 2017’ released at the 2018 Thredbo Fun and Fitness WeekReview by Stephen Yates (a friend of Brian and Linda with no Running Writing experience)

I plagiarise from Brian’s missive with a quote from “Track and Field News” (US) “If you’ve read Lenton’s previous publications you won’t be disappointed. Highly recommended.”

I note that the Forward and Forward is dated 4 December. This date was also the occasion of Brian’s heart surgery in 2014. 4 December is also Saint Barbara’s day and I admire the way the author aligned the dates. Saint Barbara was a martyr and is the patron saint of, among other things, lightening and storms. The allusion to the storms which caused the postponement of the Kosciuszko Classic in 1978 and 1988 and cancellation in 2003, 2007 and 2010 are subtle, but nevertheless appropriate. Also Saint Barbara is credited with 13 miracles and I think Brian has achieved close to that many in 50 years of Thredbo. I could find no reference in the publication to Saint Sebastian the patron saint of athletes, but I am confident it was subtly included somewhere.

This is the author’s twelfth publication and he has promised at least one more. This one contains, as usual, a mountain (ha ha) of statistics, exhaustive lists of records and runners and colourful anecdotes. There is no doubt they are all accurate and true.

I once heard Brian state that he put as many names is his books as he could as he assumed that people would buy a book with their name in it. He has certainly achieved that here, but has also outsourced a number of articles to ensure additional sales to authors and their families. Despite this delegation Brian still managed to contribute over 50% of the articles.

There is some emphasis in the publication Crackenback Challenge and this is appropriate. The 50 year anniversary of the first Challenge, conceived and organised by Ludwig Rabina in 1968, may have been the catalyst for future National Running Week events. The detail the author has provided and the absolute complete lists of winners, times, rankings and records are probably sufficient for a publication in itself.

The contributions by the “guest” writers are interesting and provide a personal perspective on past and current events and tales. It is an indication of the amount of effort and satisfaction from a plethora of attendees/participants who all contribute in some way, always willingly and cheerfully.

The Thredbo A to Z compilation contains exhaustive detail and, usually, truthful reminisces. The stories are interesting and fun to read, except for H. It was a bit exhaustive to read and must have been more exhaustive to write.

Bravery comes in many forms. It does not only manifest in war or emergency situations. It is exhibited in other ways and I consider Brian’s description of himself and his thoughts whilst handling his physical and mental issues shows a bravery of a different kind and it works (I Appear to be the Only Bipolar in Thredbo Village). That he has expressed himself in writing and is prepared to share is courageous. I am not sure if the writing of this long episode of his life, which I am sure not an always pleasant, was a labour of love or of rehabilitation (unknowingly). Nevertheless on re–reading it sounds as though it was cathartic, notwithstanding the bipolar vocabulary that permeates.

Page 10: John Walton - canberra.ymca.org.au€¦  · Web viewFor the first time in 51 Editions of Australia’s steepest race, this iconic event started at 8.30am on day 2 Sunday 13th of

I recommend this book to anyone who has attended National Running Week or Thredbo Fun and Fitness Week over the past 50 years and people living with bipolar issues.

I would encourage the author to make one of his future books an autobiography.

Reviewer’s Note: Saint Barbara is also the patron saint of artillerymen, which I was in a previous life. Hence my knowledge of 4 December, rather than any religious bent.Armstrong Alpine Adventure &Quiz Results 2019

The Quiz

Over the years I have been accused of unfairness, bias, and maybe even nepotism when my daughter (Kirana) ended up on the winning team.  This year the same slanderous accusations came thick and fast after my son’s (Jaya) maiden victory.  A few years ago he realized that being ultra specialized in Minecraft limited his usefulness to the team effort.  A couple years of dedicated study of “Have You Being Paying Attention?” meant that questions such as “For what running based activity did Andrew Macintosh gain notoriety for during the year?”* were no trouble.Joining Jaya Armstrong were Anne Dorey, Graham Atkins, Doug Robertson, Jennah Murray, and Lochie Whan.  In the post celebration interviews Anne was asked about her strategy for the night “Team selection is very important.  You need to bribe Warwick to ensure your team has a good mix of ages. I’m just there to answer the single obscure English royalty question.” Lochie was more controversial “I knew when I avoided being on a team with Mum or Dad that my odds went up”.The new venue has proven very popular, with 86 participants, with all very comfortably arranged on cushioned seats.  We considered the night very successful when the biggest complaint of the night was the overly aggressive air-conditioning!* He was the poo jogger of course.

Armstrong Alpine AdventureWhen the names of Jack Read, Grace Read, and Noah were announced as the champions, Jack was incredulous: “Surely there must have been a mistake?  Surely we couldn’t have won?!?” A quick recount confirmed their total of 404 points.  Parents Daryl and Wendy were less surprised “We always expected with our genetic input, plus our ability to pass on keen insights, that a win was inevitable”.  Although, later Daryl was later heard to mutter “Perhaps I made the wrong choice teaming up with Flynn?”

10

Second placers of Elisha and Marty Bell were very magnanimous after a rare defeat (just 2 points behind on 404) “Where the hell was #22 on the tree!?!  We ran all around the lake”.

Sorry guys, you were on the wrong side of the creek.Equally excuseless where the third place pairing of Nicki Taus and Annabel Scott on 381 points.  “Was #27 missing?  We ran up and down the track, everything seemed to match perfectly”.  It was down low, and on the right.  Pretty tough in hindsight. All up we had 91 teams, 209 participants, and not at all co-incidentally, 209 barrel draw winners.Chad Armstrong

2019 Thredbo Invitational Mile

An exciting Mile Handicap race was held with a huge number of nominees this year. There were many new runners to the event this year as well as the return of previous two-time winner Madi Gordon who was under the close examination of the handicapper.

Australian representatives Mark Bourne and Martin Dent, as well as 20-time Australian Championship participant, Philo Saunders were among the male standouts. Freya Dess led a very talented young group of females who toed the line.

The out marker was fairly quickly absorbed into the field and a tactical race ensured with a big front group until the final lap when Richard Sarkies established a break and cruised to an easy 6 second win in front of Alex Gordon and a quick finishing Ryan Armstrong who ‘snuck’ through on the inside of Grace Read, Annabel Scott and Elye Dent. Behind them was a log jam of runners with back markers, Philo Saunders and Martin Dent basically ran into a wall of athletes going up the final hill to the finish. In a great finish, 12 runners finished with 9 seconds from 3rd through to 13th.

The biggest burglar was race winner Richard, and the most penalised athlete was Richard’s wife Kirsten.

2019 Thredbo GiftAnother very popular event in 2019 was the Thredbo 60m Gift sponsored by the very generous Alfresco Pizzeria. The preliminaries had invitational races for primary-aged athletes, followed by the very competitive (and sometimes tactical) heats of Juniors, Open and Masters’ Men and Women. The heats produced 12 qualifiers and after some complex mathematics allowing for the recorded heat time, and also the perceived efforts being made, the selected athletes were given distance handicaps based on a predicted winning time of 6.8 seconds. It was a clean start although there were a few slips. 10 m from the finish it was anyone’s race with near back markers Philo Saunders and Ryan Armstrong making a huge run on the left-hand side of the course. They were, however, brought down to earth by their gap being completely closed by converging athletes. 5m from the finish, it was the right-hand side front markers, who looked like they would make it. Out of the middle of the field, though, flashed Jack Read who had actually slipped at the finish, but he was still able to win in a ‘blanket finish’. The remainder of the places took the judges many minutes to work out the results.

The inaugural Thredbo Basketball 2019 by Scott YatesThe idea for the basketball competition was inspired by my school boy days when we would often play basketball of a lunchtime. This conjured visions of joy and laughter on a sunny lunchtime. After agreeing to organise the event it soon dawned on me that during my youth there were only half a dozen mates playing basketball whereas the Thredbo Fun and Fitness week ends up with substantially more people at events. Coupled with this we were likely to have a vast difference in ages, heights and skill levels. So, playing games of basketball was out of the question due the somewhat physical nature of the game. What to do? One of the drills I loved as a kid was the around the world shooting competition. At Thredbo Leisure Centre they have hoops at different heights, so this could work well, a short hoop for the primary school, medium for high school and full size for adults. As this was the first year the event was being run it really was a suck it and see kind of exercise. We had a plan, now it was a case of seeing if people were interested, well we had over 60 people sign up on the registration night. Hmmm this could take a while to get through the shooting rounds and may not be exciting to watch. It was during a discussion over coffee with friends that the idea of a relay was put forward. During the week we allocated people to teams of four one primary schooler, one high schooler and two adult one male and one female (we did this wherever it was possible). We made sure each primary schooler had either mum, dad or an adult they knew on their team. Organising large groups of people is often like herding cats, but the competitors at Thredbo Fun and Fitness Week have been well trained over the years by Brian, Linda and Phil and we soon had the teams sorted. The first exercise was the relay event, to paint the scene there were four teams of four, the first person from the team would dribble the ball to their hoop, shoot until they scored a basket and return to their team, the next person would then take off, once the last team member was back your team would sit down. Now I am not sure if it is the nature of basketball, relays, Thredbo competitors or the fact we put parents on the same teams as their children but these relays would have to have been some of the most hotly contested events of the week. We had great big smiles on people faces, lots of shouts of encouragement, lots of laughter when some people in their eagerness to get back to their team missed shot after shot. After the relays we had the shooting rounds, where each player had five shots at the basket from the five around the world shooting positions, the players scoring a point for each basket scored. At the end of the day there can only be one winning team and this was Scott Gilkeson, Cameron Yates, Patrick Yates and Emily Gearside. You may notice my brother and youngest son were winners, this was not due to favouritism but superior genetics, actually, to be honest, I think Emily carried the team being one of the highest point scorers on the day. Well done our winners, we look forward to seeing everyone next year.

The 44th Kosciuszko Classic 19/1/2019

Another excitng edition of Australis’s highest mountain race was runing almost good conditions, compared to most years, when hail, extreme winds, horizontal rain and below zero temperatures can confront competitors in the over 20klm of walking, jogging and running. This year’s race drew 33 runners, more than double last years entry of 13. The unique event starts at the bridge on the old snowy road , the race’s lowest point. If you scan around before you start, you see glimpses of Charlottes Pass. The daunting and breathtaking view ahead of Seaman’s hut about half way up at a higher level, even much higher up is the mighty Mount Kosciuszko, our finishing point, it can be seen on a clear day at 2228m above sea level. The fire trail is very rocky, dusty, sandy and ridgy with water course crevaces makes the running track of 5klm to the top very difficult and takes immense concentration just to stay upright, but thats why people do it. (its there someone has to do it). The race got under way with a slighly cautious start with about 6 runners grouped together for the first kilometer, but by the time the leaders past the iconic Seaman’s hut, Travis Ey had established a lead wit 15years old Rohan O’Grady and Ryan armstong, James Watson,Chad Armstong and leading female Kathy Dent all chasing hard. The next stage up to Rawson’s Pass seems to go on forever with the quads starting to burn it’s always tough. Travis Ey’s training for much longer races was proving advantageous as he was thriving on the challenge. The third stage containing the looped rugged section to the top didn’t phase Travis and he went on to be an impressive winner by 1min 14secs, although slower than his 2016 win. The heavy work load he had had may have contributed l believe if he put his mind on the type of race and keeps speed training up, he could threaten Dave Osmond’s long standing record of 20:07, set in the year 2000. The eye catching run came from first timer 15yrs Rohan O’Grady who finished 2nd following up from his great 10th place Crackenback Challenge and 7th Place fun run. Lets hope he trains smart and comes back next year, he can only improve.3rd was last year’s winner Ryan Armstrong who shows great consistancy in any race like his brother Chad who was 5th this year with another previous winner James Watson splitting the two brothers for 2019.Kathy Dent being first female and 6th outright again ran an extremely high quality race, her time of 26:32 would place her 7th all time, but she holds the fifth fastest all time at 25:55 in 2006.2nd home was first timer Susie Spague who becomes 27th all time, 3rd was Naomi Lees and 4th Michelle Wells, they also now make the all time top 40 in 37th and 39th respectfully. It ws another exceptionally pulsating event, with Phil Aungles and helpers , like kevin Chapman who continues Year after year carrying runners gear to the finish line, making it all run smoothly.Congratulations again to the Dess and Walton familes for the mystery draw prizes,Please put this event on your list for next year, it is an unforgetable ripper of gigantic proportions
