Welcome to YOU CAN!

Hello, I’m John Von Achen, the author of YOU CAN. I wanted to personally welcome you to this book pre-

view and let you know I am glad you are here. Before you begin reading, I thought it would be a good

idea to let you know what you can expect because YOU CAN is a very unique book, probably unlike any

book you have ever read.

The reason is because YOU CAN is a book of HOW, spe-cifically how to improve your personal performance and achievement. There is no hype in this book, no filler and

YOU CAN is based on a proven methodology for producing maximum results I have been teaching

organizations and individuals for over 10 years from countries all over the world. And, in this book, I will

take you through the same proven methodology, step-by-step, explaining HOW in detail along the way.

HOW?HOW (to succeed, achieve, win and move forward) is a pretty important question for all of us. A question on the mind of most people regularly, if not daily. More spe-cifically, I believe most people are regularly looking for answers to these HOW questions:

• HOW do I obtain what I desire? • HOW can I improve my performance and situation?• HOW do I achieve my maximum potential?• HOW do I create the life I really want? • And, HOW do I move forward, especially when

I feel I am stuck?

Important questions to be sure, and you would think the answers would be abundant. When you consider we live in a world today that is full of information and so-called “ready solutions” connected to success and achievement, there should be HOW answers everywhere! Unfortunate-ly, that is not necessarily the case.

Please do not misunderstand me . . .

I am not suggesting the world is devoid of ideas, solu-tions and information concerning personal achievement that is valuable, practical and relevant. Quite the oppo-site is true.

Throughout my career, I have had the honor of lear ning from many wise men and women. They have each taught practical components of how to reach a “measure” of achieve-ment in life. Still, from my vantage point, a large portion of the information available today connected to success and achievement is primal, watered down, hyped up and fails to deliver on “The Promise.” The Promise? Yes, this promise.

Success and achievement IS POSSIBLE for all of us.

To be clear, The Promise does not suggest that success and achievement are necessarily easy. Nor does The Promise suggest we can always control all of the circumstances in our life. Or that success and achievement are without a price; there is always a price.

However, the promise suggests success and achievement in any endeavor is a learnable skill; one we can duplicate to some degree.

That is the promise, isn’t it . . . isn't that what all the experts tell us?

Two of my favorite quotes are from the great Jim Rohn and both have everything to do with the truth that suc-cess and achievement can be learned, duplicated and are possible for all of us:

Success is neither magical nor mysterious. Success is the natural consequence of consistently

applying the basic fundamentals.

Page 11: John Von Achen - seattleclouds.comseattleclouds.com/.../book_YC_Calameo_singl_pages.pdf · 9 HOW? HOW (to succeed, achieve, win and move forward) is a pretty important question for

11

Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines practiced every day.

There is no question that success and achievement  in  anything is something that we can all learn and dupli-cate. I know this, not only through my own experience of personal achievement, but also from the success and achievement of others I have had the privilege of ob-serving and working with.

Throughout my career, I have personally worked with hundreds of organizations on change-related projects that included coaching thousands of executives, busi-ness owners and professionals. Based on this experience, I have had the opportunity to learn what it takes to mani-fest real change that produces results.

So, I know for sure that success and achievement can be learned and duplicated because I have seen people from all walks of life (in over 40 countries) with all levels of experience and education actually do it!

Unfortunately, most people do not attain the measure of   success they are looking for and do not reach the level of achievement they are capable of. For almost my entire career, this has really bothered me. Relentlessly, I have tried to figure out why this is the case.

Obviously, there are many reasons why people do not suc-ceed and achieve more, including a number of limiting beliefs, improper actions and poor decisions. That is the easy part to figure out.

everything right, but just can’t reach the

level of achievement they long for?

13

I am sure you know of the people I am referring to. In fact, you might be one of them. I know I was. So here is the big question . . .

Is there something missing from their approach to success and achievement? And if so, what is it?

I have come to a conclusion I would like to share with you. I am convinced that the number one reason capable people cannot achieve success is because their approach to suc-cess and achievement, what ever it may be, is missing a key component.

The component I am referring to, for the most part, is  rarely emphasized and regularly overlooked by most who teach others how to succeed and achieve. Further-more, I am convinced the lack of this component is why so many people are not able to get a hold of the HOW.

And to be clear, this component is so critical to your success and achievement that it may very well change your life forever.

This is because if you learn and understand how this component works, YOU CAN realize the HOW of whatever it is you want to achieve. And, this component will help to guarantee you attain the results you want.

And what is this critical component to success and achievement?

Momentum.

MOMEnTuM?I would guess this is not the first time you have heard that momentum is directly connected to one’s ability to  suc-ceed and achieve. Still, most people I meet are unclear of what momentum really is and how it specifically plays a part in their success and achievement.

My goal here it to explain momentum in a way so that you can embrace it, use it and benefit from its power. So to be-gin with, the first step is to define momentum.

The easiest way to initially define momentum is like this; momentum is “mass in motion.” What this means is that any mass (a car, a wave, a cloud, and yes, you) has momentum if it is moving.

I think that is pretty understandable. What I also believe is understandable is something we are taught about mo-mentum in physics (and if you never learned anything about physics, I know you will still get this).

A mass in motion will stay in motion unless it loses its initial energy or is acted upon by an outside force.

For example, if you are driving a car, traveling at 60  miles per hour, the car is propelled forward by its own momentum, and will continue to move forward

It’s All About Momentum Chapter 2

Page 18: John Von Achen - seattleclouds.comseattleclouds.com/.../book_YC_Calameo_singl_pages.pdf · 9 HOW? HOW (to succeed, achieve, win and move forward) is a pretty important question for

unless you take your foot off the accelerator, run out of gas or another car or large object hits the car (or you hit something).

Another example of momentum is commonplace in sports. For example, if a football team (or any other sports team) is said to be “in momentum,” it means they are on the move, advancing forward. And, it’s really go-ing to take some serious effort from the opposing team to stop them from winning. And why is this the case?

It is because the team is MOVING FORWARD. And here-in lies the power of momentum concerning your personal success and achievement. Practically, momentum works like this:

1. As long as you are moving forward, your forwardmotion moves you

2. At the same time, your forward motion drawspower from the motion created by moving for-ward, creating even more motion

3. This multiplies the results on every additionalforward motion taken

To better understand how momentum works in prac-tice, consider the following example. If you double a penny every day for 30 days, after 30 days, you will have over 1 million pennies. The doubling action cre-ates a “multiplier effect.” Another example would be  if you push a small snowball down a hill, by the time it  reaches the bottom off the hill, it  will have become a huge snow boulder; that also is a “multiplier effect in action.”

Page 19: John Von Achen - seattleclouds.comseattleclouds.com/.../book_YC_Calameo_singl_pages.pdf · 9 HOW? HOW (to succeed, achieve, win and move forward) is a pretty important question for

19

What is happening in both cases it that the penny and the snowball initially use their own motion to move forward, but as they move forward they also draw power from the motion they create by moving forward, which creates even more motion, which in the end, produces a  much larger result in a shorter period of time. Let me say this again, specifically for you . . .

As YOU move forward, YOU CAN draw power from the motion YOU create

by moving forward.

That will create even more motion for you, which will produce larger results

in a shorter period of time.

What this means to you is that if you can tap into the pow-er of momentum, every forward motion you take can lead to larger and faster results. And, as long as you continue moving forward, it gets easier to keep moving forward.

In most cases, momentum will help you to become more efficient, get more done in less time and become more productive. And, in the process, usually you will set better priorities, and make better choices. Ultimately, if you have momentum, it will positively effect all as-pects of your life!

Just consider this . . .

Have you ever noticed that when something begins to go right in one aspect of your life, often that tends to have a positive impact on other aspects of your life as well?

It’s All About Momentum Chapter 2

Page 20: John Von Achen - seattleclouds.comseattleclouds.com/.../book_YC_Calameo_singl_pages.pdf · 9 HOW? HOW (to succeed, achieve, win and move forward) is a pretty important question for

20

Well, that’s momentum in action.

Have you ever had a time in your life when you were able to run over obstacles in your path, like they were nothing, like they weren’t even there? That, too, is momentum in action.

And, have you ever been working on something and everything seems to go easier than normal, as you move forward? Again, that is momentum in action.

For example, if you decide that you want to lose weight, and you begin to, what else happens? Most likely, you start to feel more confident, which improves your atti-tude and because you project more confidence, people might respond to you more positively, which invariably further increases your self-esteem and motivates you to continue losing weight.

The one action of just losing the weight can set off a chain reaction of events that ends up positively affecting other aspects of your life!

And here is the best news about momentum . . .

You can tap into and use momentum to help you suc-ceed and achieve MORE in any area of your life, regard-less of who you are, what you do or where you are from. This is how different kinds of people can use momentum:

• Leaders can use momentum to move pastmistakes or problems quickly, and overcome any kind of change, ultimately accomplishing the impossible.

Page 21: John Von Achen - seattleclouds.comseattleclouds.com/.../book_YC_Calameo_singl_pages.pdf · 9 HOW? HOW (to succeed, achieve, win and move forward) is a pretty important question for

21

It’s All About Momentum Chapter 2

• Business owners can use momentum to bringinnovations to market faster and accumulate customers easier.

• Parents can use momentum to improve the development of their children.

• YOU CAN use momentum in your life to enjoysuccess and achievement faster and to a greater measure than you have now.

And, YOU CAN tap into momentum, if you know how;  all  the time in everything you do and any-time you want, making momentum a regular part of your life.

That is, as long as you move forward regularly.

It is important to remember what we have already learned about momentum: “a mass in motion will stay in motion unless it loses its initial energy or is acted upon by an out-side force.” This means that to tap into momentum, you need to regularly move forward.

But that is not always so easy to do, is it?

There are many situations, circumstances, issues, events and people (including ourselves) in life that can definitely prevent us from moving forward and can cause us to lose our momentum.

I'll bet you’ve been in situations when you have tapped into momentum, and then, out of nowhere you’ve lost it! So, to keep moving forward in order to keep your momen-tum up can be a challenge.

Page 22: John Von Achen - seattleclouds.comseattleclouds.com/.../book_YC_Calameo_singl_pages.pdf · 9 HOW? HOW (to succeed, achieve, win and move forward) is a pretty important question for

23

And this brings us to the HOW:

• HOW do you make sure that you are movingforward so you will be able to tap into momen-tum?

• HOW can you begin to move forward if you havegotten stuck?

• HOW do you begin to move forward if you havenever actually started to move forward?

• HOW do you get beyond that paralysis that robsyou from getting started on moving forward in the very beginning of any endeavor?

That sure is a lot of HOW. So, I guess now would be a good time to begin keeping my promise of showing you HOW practically.

It’s All About Momentum Chapter 2

Page 24: John Von Achen - seattleclouds.comseattleclouds.com/.../book_YC_Calameo_singl_pages.pdf · 9 HOW? HOW (to succeed, achieve, win and move forward) is a pretty important question for

When my son Ben was young, one day he came home from school and announced he was learning how to add. Since he seemed pretty excited about it, I asked him to get his workbook and show me what he had learned.

We sat together at the kitchen table and he began to write down the various addition formulas he had learned that day, 1 + 2 = 3, 1 + 3 = 4 and so on. For some reason, he neglected to begin with 1 + 1, so I asked him, “What about 1 + 1 Ben? What does 1 + 1 equal?”In response, Ben quickly wrote down 1 + 1 and then paused.

1 + 1 = 11 . . . BrIllIant matH!

Page 25: John Von Achen - seattleclouds.comseattleclouds.com/.../book_YC_Calameo_singl_pages.pdf · 9 HOW? HOW (to succeed, achieve, win and move forward) is a pretty important question for

I guess he had forgotten that formula. After looking at what he had written, he guessed the correct answer must be 11 (to his credit, it does look good on paper).

I learned an import lesson that day. Even though my son’s calculation of 1 + 1 = 11 is incorrect in mathematics, his answer is very often correct in life when you tap into the power of momentum. Remember, one of the great advantages of momentum is you always get more.

You gotta love tHat kInd of matH!
