The namesakes

John Tyler Wines specializes in small production wines from the esteemed Bacigalupi Vineyards in the Russian River Valley.

The first names of John Bacigalupi and Tyler Heck were joined to create this label.

Both the Bacigalupi and Heck families have contributed to the advancement of the California wine industry, helping it to become a leader in fine wine production.

John Tyler Wines is the end result of the John Bacigalupi’s fruit and Tyler Heck’s passion for winemaking.

With now 3 generations involved we hope to continue both of these families’ great legacies by producing unforgettable small lot wines under the John Tyler label.

Family History- How it all began

Over 50 years ago Charles Bacigalupi, John’s father, and Paul Heck, Tyler’s grandfather, met and formed a friendship.

Purchasing Korbel Champagne Cellars in Guerneville in 1953, Paul and his brother Adolf L. Heck Jr. began the renovation and expansion of the modest facility.

Russian River Pinot Noir

In 1956, Charles and Helen Bacigalupi purchased 121 acres on Westside Road, a few miles south of town.

Envisioning the demand for premium wine grapes, Paul encouraged Charles to plant chardonnay and pinot noir and in 1964, Charles began his plantings with six acres of each varietal.

Today the family farms 4 parcels, supplying grapes for some of the regions most prestigious wineries, and now the John Tyler label

The Bacigalupi Family

Bacigalupi Vineyards established in 1956 by Charles and Helen Bacigalupi was the source for the Chardonnay used by Chateau Montelena to wine the historic “Judgment of Paris” tasting in 1976.

The vineyard has a total of 175 acres planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah.

The Winemaker

Tyler Heck

Studied enology, viticulture and agricultural business at both Fresno State and Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. He graduated from Cal Poly with a BS.

Worked in the wine and viticulture industries in the Australia and

several well known wineries in Sonoma County including Dry Creek Vineyard and Iron Horse. California experience includes Sonoma,

Napa and Mendocino counties, the Pacific Northwest, and Europe.

Sustainability Practices

Consistently striving to improve farming practices, I have tried to emphasize environmental soundness, sustainability, and efficiency, all without compromising quality." ~ John Bacigalupi

Some examples of our sustainability practices Every vineyard is planted with winter cover crops intended to hold

precious soils in place while decreasing the risk of erosion on hillside terrain and adding essential nutrients back to the soil all while providing a habitat for beneficial insects.

Precise canopy management including leaf, shoot and cluster removal. This increases air movement through the canopy and better light penetration, drastically reducing the amount of fungicides needed.

Pesticide usage is reduced naturally with the introduction of predator habitats (i.e. owl and bat boxes, bird houses.) Also, native and seeded cover crops help reduce dust thus naturally reducing mite populations.

100% of our water use is reclaimed from rainfall. Water is gathered and stored in our two reservoirs, not used from any municipal source.

All pomace (grapeskins) are composted and are used the following year as soil amendments

We use recycled material for all bottles, boxes and shipping materials. ~Our cellar temperatures are maintained naturally, decreasing our electricity use.

All possible winery waste is recycled including glass, paper, cardboard and office equipment.

Our limited offering of library wines has been designed to exemplify Tyler Heck's unique winemaking style. Our extended ageing process in both barrel and bottle has created Pinot Noir and Zinfandel wines that will grow more supple and luxurious

over time.
