Wim Wenders’ fame stems primarily from his motion pictures such as Paris, Texas, Wings of Desire and Pina, yet the filmmaker admits: “Photography is the other half of my life.” In honor of his 70th birthday in 2015 the Dusseldorf Museum Kunstpalast is exhibiting large-format photographs and landscape panoramas. “When you’re on the go a lot,” Wim Wenders writes, “when you like to meander in order to lose yourself, you can end up in the strangest places. It must be a sort of built-in radar that often guides me into areas that are either peculiarly quiet or else peculiar in a quiet way.” Unlike his work as a filmmaker, Wenders dispenses with modern technical contrivances as a photographer. He prefers analogue photography, without artificial light or tripod. The exhibition catalogue will feature 240 works including some from his series Written in the West, Buena Vista Social Club, Once, Pictures from the Surface of the Earth, and Journey to Onomichi.

The most beautiful photo book on Marilyn ever published, including all the iconic images and an extensive interview with the star.. Marilyn Monroe posed for nearly every major photographer of her day. This pictorial chronicle features pictures by Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Elliott Erwitt, Philippe Halsman, Weegee, and thirty other artists: her early days as a model for ads and pinup calendars, film stills that follow her career from a minor actress to a major star, famous master portraits and shots by paparazzi who trailed her every move. Marilyn emerges in all her moods— young and carefree, sexy and serious, glamorous and girl-next-door. In a fascinating and revealing interview with French writer Georges Belmont from 1960, Marilyn sets the record straight about her early life, her ambitions, fears, and dreams. With an affectionate foreword by Jane Russell, a friend of Marilyn’s and her co-star in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Available again at a special price.

Preparing his movie Paris, Texas in late 1983, German filmmaker Wim Wenders travelled the West equipped with a 6 x 7 medium format camera in search of subjects and locations that would bring this desolate landscape to life. Driving the empty highways of Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California he was transfixed by the vastness of a country saturated with light and colour and energized by the American cowboy mystique – a country that even in the 20th century had lost none of its evocative, mythic power. This collection of lush, colourful photographs displays dramatic, visually arresting images, haunting vistas and the poetic dilapidation of a country touched by man but ruled by nature. An interview with the photographer reveals the many ways Wenders was both moved and bemused by the “heartland” of the American Dream. This revised edition of the 1987 classic, features a new compilation by the author and all images have been newly lithographed.

Through their inimitable mixture of eroticism, subdued elegance and decadent luxury, Newton’s pictures reflect in the highest aesthetic quality an obsession with human vanity – from female exhibitionism to male voyeurism. With technical perfection and a relentless directness, Newton stages the never-ending psychodrama that contrasts glamour with the need for admiration, self-confidence with the desire for self-presentation, and Eros with Thanatos. Private Property was originally a three-part portfolio containing 45 black-and-white photographs, It includes Newton’s best work from the period 1972-1983 – an exquisite assortment of fashion shots, portraits, and erotic motifs which are all based on real locations and luxurious life styles. The entire sequence of pictures from the Private Property portfolio is included in our book which first appeared in 1989. With a text by the American semiotician and cultural critic, Marshall Blonsky.

Compiled by August Sander himself, this book was first published in 1929, with a foreward by German writer Alfred Doblin. On its first publication, it was advertised as follows: “The sixty shots of twentieth-century Germans which the author includes in his Face of Our Time represents only a small selection drawn from August Sander’s major work, which he began in 1910 and which he has spent twenty years producing and adding fresh nuances to. The author has not approached this immense self-imposed task from an academic standpoint, nor with scientific aids, and has received advice neither from racial theorists nor from social researchers. He has approached his task as a photographer from his own immediate observations of human nature and human appearances, of the human environment, and with an infalliable instinct for what is genuine and essential.”

The rich selection of Flore's photographs featured in this book explores the multiple facets of the Middle East, in images soaked in a dream-filled atmosphere. Flore's overview of the East is nourished not only by her own childhood memories – since she spent her early years in Egypt

– but also by an accurate and passionate reading of masterpieces which become a source of inspiration for the photographer. In these images is fixed a longing for a time when travelling towards the East was shrouded in mystery and it was also an “initiation”. Through her timeless images, the photographer offers us an invitation to journey to the Mediterranean basin where she herself travelled from 2008 to 2012 for this series. A French-Spanish photographer and daughter of the painter Olga Gimeno, Flore was born in 1963. She currently lives and works in Paris. Flore’s work is exhibited in galleries throughout the world.

1992 is the year of the carnage, Palermo is stunned by grief and rage at the bombs that tore away from their families and country institutional figures, magistrates, police officers and civilians. Names that we’re all familiar with, which we’ll never grow tired of remembering. Palermo reacts. One of the various forms of protest against mafia violence is particularly powerful: for a month eleven women occupy Piazza Castelnuovo, alternating in a fast. They meet, recognize each other and decide to do something extreme, giving up food and letting themselves be overcome by hunger to denounce their “hunger for justice”. These portraits by Francesco Francaviglia testify to the strength of these women, their dignity and their beauty. Twenty-two years have elapsed since then, but nothing of the strength and courage of those days has been even slightly tarnished by time. They are faces that it is wonderful to see again, eyes that challenge silence and fear.

Still photographs and memorabilia document the war experiences of Walter Rosenblum, one of the most decorated photographers of WWII, and allow us to acknowledge and remember the work of all the photographers in WWII who chose to fight with cameras. A photographer for more than fifty years and an important figure in the advancement of twentieth century photography, Walter Rosenblum is the author of the iconic photograph Omaha Beach Rescue on the cover of this book, still very much in use whenever this historic day is recalled. In his essay, Daniel Allentuck provides an accurate account of the context and circumstances in which Detachment 'P' 163rd Signal Photographic Company worked, and clarifies unequivocally the history of this image, supported by the evidentiary proof of original documents.

Luca Campigotto: Theatres of WarTexts by Franco Marini, Marco Meneguzzo, Luca Campigotto et al

Luca Campigotto has specialized in the photography of landscapes and architecture, linked to the theme of travel. He presents in this volume his personal research on the places that were theatres of First World War, on its 100th anniversary. Like a journey across time, Luca Campigotto's photographs offer a glimpse of natural mountain landscapes that have certainly changed yet remain perfectly recognizable. In these pictures, battle and encampment sites become the object of a contemporary work, of visual choices capable of balancing plays of light, shadow, colour and depth, and of exercising sophisticated control over the outcome of the shooting. Campigotto's pictures reveal not only physical traces, that nature has preserved for one hundred years, but even the emotions generated by painful human traces. Up at these peaks, the echo of the Great War still rings with its full intensity, bouncing off the countless tales of war, memories and episodes, the relics conserved in village museums.

This monograph, dedicated to the work of the Dutch photographer, Jan Dibbets, presents a vast and exhaustive excursus among the artist’s most important works, beginning from his debut in the late 1960s to today. Among the pioneers of Conceptual Art, and part of the emergence of Land Art as well as Arte Povera, from the late 1960s Dibbets has been one of the very first to single out a use for photography as a ‘thinking’ tool, carrying out a revolution the consequences of which have been further amplified in the present digital age. In dialogue with some of the most salient moments of Western art culture, from Dutch painting to Italian art, and the relating theories on form and perspective, Dibbets’s inquisitive mind knows how to create an innovative, individual course that has contributed in turn to establishing new artistic languages. The book includes rare works from private collections, and it is completed by the artist’s biography.

The catalogue of a touring exhibition hosted by the Museu da Imagem e do Som in Sao Paulo bringing together a collection of 80 photographs taken over the last 20 years. The show is arranged into two series:

'Things I see'' and “Mexico, On Scene” and represents a journey through Jessica Lange's diary of impressions. Jessica Lange is well known for her acting career, playing leading parts in iconic movies and winning two Academy Awards for Best Actress for her roles in Tootsie, in 1983, and Blue Sky, in 1995. Not until later, at the beginning of the nineties, did she seriously take up photography. Her images are captured on her travels and wanderings –her lens has roamed through countries such as the USA, France, Finland and Italy, although she has a particular soft spot for Mexico, as she herself puts it, “for its lights and wonderful nights “. She says: “I find photography a most mysterious process – capturing that moment in time and space, elusive and fleeting, and crystallizing it. You have made a photograph. It is its own thing now.”

Face NordPhotographs by Charles DelcourtTexts by Andrey Kurkov

FACE NORD was born out of a walk in ‘the spoil tips valley’, the Nord-Pas-de-Calais coalfield. Charles Delcourt navigated visually, from one spoil tip to another, taking the time to explore, steered by his vision and his training as a landscape architect. He experiences photography as a piece of luggage carried by a traveller interested in other people and produces funny, moving pictures that are sympathetic towards those he meets. Andrey Kurkov, acclaimed writer of Death and the Penguin alongside other novels, translated into 36 languages, discovered Charles Delcourt’s photographs and decided to join him on his tour. He walked along and wrote three previously unpublished texts which reflect the pictures and bring the characters to life. Charles and Andrey, reality hunters, are united with the inhabitants of the coalfield by a characteristic trait: a sense of humour, and a sense of solidarity which knows no bounds.

From Venice to Istanbul, then Jerusalem, Alexandria, Sarajevo and back to Cordoba, Eric Le Brun’s texts rise up and circle around his photographs. He sketches the outlines of a vast sea country, where in the passage of history, tenderness and menace, alternate with each other and spread. Under the cover of the book, ancient songs and poems by Anouar Benmalek – chosen and sung by Emmanuelle Bunel exclusively for Un lion derrière la vitre – merge and reveal the weft of the whole: On the border of legends and tales, both in the east and the west, cities outlive the men who created or destroyed them, just like arrows shot through time.

Saudade Moon is a wonderful and immersive journey across Brazil. The images in this book penetrate the heart and soul, the very existence of this country. Photojournalist Paolo Marchetti captures events, landscapes and people and sees them in a romantic way, or in other words with “saudade”, a Portuguese word which means an emotional state related to nostalgia, melancholy, and bitter sweet longing. Through the photographer eyes which filter reality into his own style we see Brazil and its people in an unprecedented, remarkable and penetrating way. The photographs in this book individually and combined create an ephemeral visual poem that agitates the senses and ignites emotion. Paolo Marchetti has published his works in Internazionale, Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, Sunday Times, New York Times,Time magazine and many others. He has received many awards, he is a four time winner of "Best of Photojournalism", winner of ANI Pix-Palace Award 2013 in Perpignan and also he won the "Leica Photographer Award 2013".

John R J Taylor has been visiting and photographing the historic town of Aldeburgh, famous for its music festival started by Benjamin Britten, on the Suffolk coast of England for over a decade and this book is the culmination of his time there.

“To photograph along the English coastline where one is constantly exposed to mawkish parochial seaside imagery is a challenge I relish. Most of us are aware of the rather etiolated nature of British seaside art and assorted popular imagery that we find in the coastal galleries, cafes and tourist haunts, but like the smell of freshly fried hot vinegary chips somehow we are inexorably drawn to it and never seem to tire of it despite its increasing crudity. All around the English coast one is confronted by clichéd populist imagery. As an artist I could not subscribe to that kind of imagery and so created my own idiosyncratic vision of the town and its environs.”

The Winged Victory of Samothrace is one of the most refined and spectacular examples of Greek sculpture of the Hellenistic period. It has undergone three major restorations since its arrival at the Louvre in 1864, in addition to the latest restoration in 2014. This restoration was a job that required taking into account all of the multiple identities of the Victory of Samothrace, as a masterpiece of ancient Greek sculpture, as a work of reconstruction of the nineteenth century, and as one of the Louvre’s most treasured masterworks. This illustrated volume takes us into the restoration process, but it also retraces the history of the sculpture to the Island of Samothrace and places it within its original context in the sanctuary of the Gods. The historic restoration and its accompanying publication is an opportunity to delve into the secrets of the Nike of Samothrace.

This first comprehensive book on one of the most cherished masterpieces of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels, argues that with his Fall of the Rebel Angels (1562) Pieter Bruegel (died 1569) turned a traditional devotional theme into an innovative commentary on his own time, and situates the painting within the early modern cultures of knowledge and collecting. More particularly, it exposes that many of the hybrid falling angels are carefully composed of naturalia and artificialia, as they were collected in art and curiosity cabinets of the time. This prompts an examination of the world at the time that Bruegel painted the Fall of the Rebel Angels: locally, in the courtly centers of Antwerp and Brussels on the eve of the Dutch revolt, and globally, in the context of the discovery of the New World. Painted as a tale of hubris and pride, Bruegel’s masterpiece becomes a meditation on the potential and danger of man’s pursuit of art knowledge and politics.

The Cappella Maggiore of the Franciscan basilica of Santa Croce in Florence was created at the end of the fourteenth century. The commission was awarded to Agnolo Gaddi, the last in a family of painters boasting direct artistic descent from Giotto.

Culturally and artistically, the decoration of the chapel, comprising a magnificent cycle illustrating the Legend of the True Cross, has many meanings in the context of Florentine milieu at the time. From the theological perspective, the choice of one of the themes dearest to the Franciscans was linked to the dedication of the church to the Holy Cross, but it was also connected to the Franciscans’ role as the so-called Custodians of the Holy Land. From the artistic point of view, this cycle concluded the grand arc of Florentine painting that originated with Giotto. For all of these reasons, it was important to take a new look at this primary text upon completion of its restoration in 2010. This volume present the findings of the group of experts from different disciplines.

This show at the Estorick Collection, London, celebrates the work of Renato Guttuso (1911-1987) one of Italy’s most widely respected modern painters. Towards the end of the 1930s his powerful brand of expressionist realism vividly conveyed the angst of a generation which wanted its art to reflect and engage with the urgency of contemporary life. Rejecting both the formalism of abstract painting and the naturalism advocated by those on the far right of Fascism’s cultural establishment, Guttuso played a key role in forging a style that would go on to dominate Italian art during the immediate post-war years. Guttuso aligned himself with the Corrente group, which sought to create an art free from rhetorical overtones, and adopted an increasingly critical stance toward Mussolini’s ailing regime. Resolutely

‘popular’, his work continued to chronicle Italy’s frequently turbulent political life, and the changing face of its society, for over forty years. Among Guttuso’s most enduring subjects were the landscapes and inhabitants of southern Italy, their vitality being celebrated in works employing a suitably rich and vibrant palette reflecting the intense colours of his native Sicily.

This is the catalogue of a major solo exhibition of the work of Cecily Brown, featuring some fifty works including paintings, works on paper, gouache and watercolours. At first glance Cecily Brown’s painting looks like an enormous coloured anthill, with thousands of insects following each other, climbing over each other, hiding and reappearing, leaving colourful traces of their movements. Her exploration proceeds along parallel paths between the conceptual analysis of the visual narrative and the linguistic structure capable of supporting this process, between areas of sophisticated visionary quality and a muscular vocabulary of signs and colours. Her paintings are rich of cultured references to the history of art with countless echoes of images by the grand masters. Cecily Brown, born in London in 1969, lives and works in New York and her paintings are included in numerous public collections throughout the United States, among which the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Gagosian Gallery and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and at the Tate Gallery, London.

This is the first monograph to focus exclusively on the prolific collage output of Sergei Sviatchenko, a leading figure in the contemporary collage world. Edited by Rick Poynor, who provides a critical overview, it gathers Sviatchenko's most significant work from the past 10 years and shows little seen collages from his early years in Ukraine before he moved in 1990 to live and work in Denmark. The severe reductiveness of Sviatchenko's interventions sets them apart. Collages from his long-running Less series consist of only two or three elements floating on a jarringly bright background. The fewer fragments he allows himself to work with, the more crucial the acts of selection, excision and montage become. Depthless backdrops deny his constructions a sense of location and push them forward as graphically sculptural objects. His strangely dislocated interventions offer moments of unexpected balance and repose in the turbulent image-stream. This beautifully designed monograph is illustrated with 165 images selected to bring out salient themes in Sviatchenko’s continuing development as one of the most rigorous and provocative collage artists working today.

Egon Schiele saw himself as a visionary and prophetic artist, František Kupka painted spiritualized abstractions, Joseph Beuys called for a social revolution through art, and Friedensreich Hundertwasser created the first of his famous spirals. These groundbreaking artistic developments would not have existed without their encounter with the life and work of prominent artists-naturists. The significance of the rise of these artist-naturists, who also considered themselves religious dissenters and social revolutionaries, is a little known and largely underreported part of the history of modern art. Today, the names of Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach, Gusto Gräser, Gustav Nagel, as well as Friederich Muck-Lamberty and Ludwig Christian Haeusser are all but forgotten in the art world, even though they were well known and highly esteemed during their lifetime, particularly in avant-garde circles. Through the exhibition and book, including some 300 works by artists such as Schiele, Kupka, Beuys and Hundertwasser as well as diverse documentation materials, unexpected connections are revealed within modern art in a far-reaching artistic and cultural context.

Since 1912, and the appearance of “Hommage à Picasso”, the Cubist Picasso Portrait by Juan Gris, the work of Pablo Picasso has been a challenge and incentive alike for a wide variety of artists. For generations, “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” (1907) or “Guernica” (1937) have been adapted, are appropriated in the most diverse ways, no matter what approaches the respective artists themselves might otherwise have pursued thus far. It is the inexhaustible imagination and scope in Picasso’s work that challenges artists, between abstraction and figure, artistic creativity and politically intended statement, to ever-new exciting dialogues. The voluminous book is published to accompany the reopening of the renovated Halle für aktuelle Kunst at the Deichtorhallen, and features works by Francis Bacon, Jean-Michel Basiquiat, Brassaï, Rineke Dijkstra, Robert Doisneau, Richard Hamilton, David Hockney, Thomas Houseago, Asger Jorn, Martin Kippenberger, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Louise Lawler, Dora Maar, Jonathan Monk, Robert Motherwell, Claes Oldenburg, Sigmar Polke, Richard Prince, Thomas Schütte, Cindy Sherman, Andy Warhol and many others.

This catalogue of Henry Moore's (1898-1986) work presents once again one of the great innovators of 20th century sculpture with selected works, among others from the collection of Tate Britain, London. The motto “Great Art is Not Perfect” refers to Henry Moore's basic principle of observing and working alongside nature, and realizing his sculptural ideas in line with the true nature of the material. Moore was one of the most popular English artists, not only during his lifetime. Like no other, he stands for an explicitly humanistic idea of man. The exhibition at the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern aims to bring back to memory the achievements of Henry Moore whilst spanning a bridge to the work of Paul Klee. Although the two artists had never met, they appear very closely related in their anti-academic stance. Both avoided the debates of the avant-gardes regarding figuration and abstraction, and both were concerned with combining abstract and surrealist as well as classical and romantic elements.

Famous for his nudes and portraits as the “painter of the flesh”, the interest in Lucian Freud has again in recent years increased immensely. Freud, who spoke of his human models as “animals dressed”, has also dealt in detail with nonhuman animals in his work. He made no distinction between his models; with both – animals and people – he was in search of their true nature. Selected works in this book highlight three phases in Freud’s work: at the beginning the shaping of dead bodies; then the animal as a companion, connected with the turn to portraiture; at last the English subjects with dog and horse representations. By focusing on depicting animals, the exhibition aims to encourage a new consideration of the artistic development and creative process of Lucian Freud. The exhibition and the accompanying catalogue encourage a re-evaluation of the work of the ninth laureate of the Rubens Prize awarded by the City of Siegen in 1997, whose work is represented at Kunstmuseum Siegen with permanent loans from the private collection Lambrecht-Schadeberg.

We approach the astonishing works by Thilo Droste rather helplessly until he takes us by the hand and leads us into his not so roundabout world. The first comprehensive exhibition catalogue of the Berlin-based South German artist (born 1977) begins with a photo of a granite slab. This creates a nice contrast to the commemorative medal for Hans Holbein the Elder at the entrance to the Holbein house, the location of the solo exhibition of Thilo Droste’s work by the Augsburger Kunstverein. During the private view, it can only be entered by whoever has the guts to walk across a large, loosely laid out mirror glass surface measuring 25 square meters; otherwise there is only the back entrance. Beyond the mirror surface is a table with old, disused china, the classic paraphernalia of the wedding-eve party. Ever since the Affichistes, Pop artists, minimalists and conceptualists have given the original meanings of each appropriated or used object a nudge, sometimes even added a dent. Thilo Droste expands on this with astonishing variations.

A cruel, zombiistic terrifying artist, interactions with paint, goo and deceitful flattery – so were the headlines to the first exhibition by Daniel Richter in Austria at Galerie im Taxispalais in Innsbruck. Since 2006, the artist has been Professor at the Studio of Expanded Pictorial Space at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Daniel Richter, now considered one of Germany's most important contemporary artists, in his work not only reflects the fundamental transformation that the medium of painting has gone through in recent years, he also captivates with his sensual as well as intellectually alluding statements and analyses of art and society. The volume accompanying this small retrospective presents Daniel Richter’s creative production since the turn of the millennium, with major works and, among the 23 selected images, several new works that are reproduced here for the first time. The mostly large-scale works refer not only to media images and set pieces from popular culture, but reinterpret art historical motifs, and exact a completely unique reading.

In 1966, when Kuehn first exhibited the work “Melt Pieces” at the legendary Bianchini Gallery in New York, he noted in his sketchbook:

“Butter in the sun. What could be more fatal?” This brief consideration signifies one of his basic principles: the procedural aspect. Kuehn rebelled with his early work against the authority of the rigid stable form, as was represented by the then predominant Minimal Art. The ideal cuboids seem to have started to melt like ice or butter. Physical processes, often associated with external forces, transform intact geometric shapes. Kuehn experimented with different materials (tar, fiberglass, latex, metal, wood) and an incredible breadth of creative possibilities. Deformations and transformations, the basic form remaining intact, become visible and produce a narrative as well as a metaphorical moment. This book, which was created in close collaboration with the artist, gives an insight into the diverse sculptural, painterly and graphic works from five decades, and includes interviews and texts from the artist.

Published to accompany an exhibition at Hauser & Wirth in London in January 2015. Working from the artist’s archives, this show will feature a large selection of monotypes, which were central to Schendel’s artistic career. It will focus on the ideas of writing, invisibility and ephemera. The book, full of facsimiles of Schendel’s delicate monotypes printed on rice paper, fully engages in the Brazilian artist’s aesthetic. A text will feature from the exhibition’s curator, Taisa Palhares from the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, who acted as a co-curator of the Schendel retrospective that began at Tate Modern in 2013. Mira Schendel is one of Latin America’s most significant and prolific post-war artists who created a vast and unique oeuvre that addressed themes of existence, language and meaning and comprised paintings, drawings and sculptures. Born in Zurich in 1919, Schendel emigrated to Brazil in 1949, settling in São Paulo, where she was part of an intellectual circle of psychoanalysts, physicists, critics, and philosophers. She died in 1988.

On a brightly colored wave, Carl Ostendarp (born 1961) has installed the exhibition of the Rolf Ricke Collection at MMK 2007 in Frankfurt, presenting his own paintings and those of his colleagues in a large-format two-tone wall piece. This “refreshes the way of seeing”, decontextualizes the familiar, and decouples the works from anything closely related, thus allowing comparisons at a distance. His little artist’s book “Book” repeats this situation; now the viewers, however, are free to project their own imaginary selection onto Ostendarp’s book(pages)walls. It might be his simple biomorphic forms, his words in bright colors, through which he merges, in a rather humorous way, Modernity, Pop, Colour Field and Minimalism. Just as he explores the banality of everyday life in his own work, the wave extending across all pages – one edition in red, in the other in blue – also quite sarcastically raises the question of complexity in the simplicity of painting.

Renate Wiehager provides us with the essential pointer regarding the working method of Luca Trevisani, born 1979 in Verona, now living in Berlin, by bringing Le Corbusier into play, whose amorphous architectures had been inspired by artefacts found at the boundary between nature and culture. However, Luca Trevisani’s associatively gathered world of forms draws from broader sources: graphic and product design, scientific maps, literature, arts and crafts techniques, art history, materials and elements of nature, photographs and materials of the world of fashion. Luca Trevisani subjects this material to a continuous process of reading and re-reading, translation, deconstruction and construction. Artificially created blue crystals, for example, resulting from certain chemical reactions, dominate one of the current groups of works. Dried plants, such as corn cobs, partially covered with light reflecting crystals in Yves Klein-blue, turn into haptic forms from the twilight realm of nature and art. This beautifully presented volume, designed in collaboration with the artist, provides an extensive overview of his work.

In 2014, Japan and Switzerland celebrate the 150th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. On this occasion, the museum Haus Konstruktiv realizes, in cooperation with the Japan Foundation, the exhibition project “Logical Emotion – Contemporary Art from Japan." Based on the constructive-concrete and conceptual heritage of the Zurich Museum, Director Sabine Schaschl and Kenjiro Hosaka from the Museum of Modern Art Tokyo, curate an extensive group exhibition on contemporary Japanese art. Their presentation focuses on logic and its supposed counterpart – emotion. The curators use various media as their source: painting, installation, video, photography and architecture, right up to applied art and manga drawings. In addition to recent Japanese art, internationally already renowned positions are shown as well. The result – in the sense of the eponymous oxymoron

“Logical Emotion ” – is a bipolar representation spectrum that ranges from the solely rational comprehension of the world, to a purely sensual experience.

Can a masterpiece emerge from a dictatorship? The Große Neeberger Figur – a central piece in European artwork – stands as an icon of DDR sculpting, having been created in the early 1970’s by Dresden native Wieland Förster (b.1930). The Gerhard-Marcks-Haus now juxtaposes Förster’s piece with other sculptures from East and West Germany in a so-called Single-Image-Exhibit. The brilliance of this central sculpture shines across four halls as visitors explore the art landscape through themes such as abstract figure, disrobing, realism and pain. Although the sculpture’s form initially calls to mind the human body it is before all a sculptural construction and in that sense Förster creates a noteworthy tie between the notions of realism and the development of western European sculpture. Surrounding the Große Neeberger Figur stands a kaleidoscope of images that further explore the presentation of the human form around 1970.

The exhibition catalogue “after nature” shows a special aspect of the artistic approach to nature: not the depiction of it, but rather how sculptors apply methods taken from nature. On display are four different positions. First, the cast from nature; second, the working of organically growing material; third, defamiliarisation through hybrid forms; and fourth, abstraction of forms found in nature. Works in three dimensions are exhibited by four contemporary artists: Anne Koskinen from Finland, Reiner Maria Matysik from Berlin, Martin Schwenk from Düsseldorf, and Thomas & Renée Rapedius from Berlin. To attest that this kind of engagement with nature is not just a theme of contemporary art but follows in a notable tradition, art-historical key works by artists including Max Ernst, Gerhard Marcks, Bernhard Heiliger, Hans Arp, Thomas Grünfeld and Berlinde de Bruyckere are also part of the exhibition and catalogue.

Most of the artists chose the flattest, smoothest surfaces for their piece whilst Choules went straight for a crumbling, crooked and semi hidden wall (the last place you’d choose if you wanted people to see your work). He then set about utilising the crumbling stone and peeling paint, lifting it out further with his trademark black flourishes. With the onset of the Spanish Civil War, he moved to Paris and opened his couture house on Avenue George V in August 1937. Within two years, he was being lauded as a revolutionary, and his designs were highly sought-after.On the 120th anniversary of the birth of Balenciaga, the Cite de la Dentelle et de la Mode have dedicated an exhibition to the works of the couturier. The accompanying catalogue will present the lacework of Balenciaga in all of its forms, while displaying the designer’s stylistic ingenuity and originality at the forefront of fashion design throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Full ensembles, accessories, hats, gloves, shoes, come together with photographs and sketches from the workshop to recreate a vast panorama of the creative output of Balenciaga in relation to the history of lace.

Show Me LisbonLisboetas present their city in a book and documentary film.Rita Sousa Tavares

Available: April 2015ISBN: 9789899919105Price: £35.00Format: Hardback, with DVDPages: 290Illustrations: 250 colourSize: 295 x 225 mmCategory: TravelRights: Worldwide except.Portugal.

Show me Lisbon reveals the city as seen by thirteen people from Lisbon. They are Lisboetas by birth or by choice and represent different generations, areas and livelihoods. The final result is a dynamic, informal and realistic portrayal of Lisbon that considers themes such as the definition of ‘being Lisboeta’, the Tagus, light, gastronomy, sounds, history, ethnic mixes, fado or the city’s façades. The personal tips and choices of those Lisboetas are compiled at the end of the book, with different sections for restaurants, tascas, fado houses, museums, viewpoints, hotels, routes and special things to see and do, resulting in a complete and unprecedented insider’s guide to Lisbon. The book features the work of the well-known photographer João Pina, who lives in Buenos Aires. His work has been published in periodicals such as the New York Times, New Yorker and El País, with exhibitions in major galleries around the world. With a detachable foldout inside with map and directory of street addresses and a DVD containing a 52-minute documentary.
