Pope Francis' Prayer to Virgin Mary

for protection from coronavirus

O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Je-sus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

My dear Parishioners, Immediately before this week’s Gospel passage, Jesus warns his disciples against the “leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.” His intent seems to have been to stress fidelity to him and to his new law of love rather than to the archaizing teachings of Jew-ish authori es. This provides the context for Jesus’ probing ques on: “Who do you say that I am?” In Ma hew, Peter emerges as the hero. “You are the Christ,” he says, “the Son of the living God.” That pre y high Christological confession. Even Jesus seems impressed. Jesus then gives a new name to “Simon son of Jonah.” calling him Peter. As is the case with the other God-given name changes in the Bible (such as Jacob to Israel, Saul to Paul), this signals a milestone transi on in the life of the newly named person. Jesus explains by playing on Peter’s new name: “I say to you, you are Peter [“Petros” in Greek], and upon this rock [“petra”] I will build my church. Jesus’ further promise to give Peter “the keys to the kingdom of heaven” and the power of finding and loosing provides the basis for the Church’s belief in Peter as the first pope. This exchange with Jesus does not make Peter perfect - just a few verses later, Jesus will call Peter “Satan” when Peter denies the possibility of Christ’s passion and death. Nor will Peter’s God-given authority spare him from later following his master to death on a cross. Peter will have to exercise his leadership in the Church with humility, relying on the grace and guidance of his heavenly Father, who led him to recognize Jesus as the Son of the living God. Who do we say that Jesus is - and what difference it makes.

Sincerely,

Father Ed
