Responsorial Psalm
Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
First Reading ~ Isaiah 60:1-6
Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the LORD shines, and over you appears his glory. Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shining radiance. Raise your eyes and look about; they all gather and come to you: your sons come from afar, and your daughters in the arms of their nurses.
Then you shall be radiant at what you see, your heart shall throb and overflow, for the riches of the sea shall be emptied out before you, the wealth of nations shall be brought to you. Caravans of camels shall fill you, dromedaries from Midian and Ephah; all from Sheba shall come bearing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the LORD.
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Gospel according to Matthew 2:1-12
When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, "Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage." When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Je-rusalem with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel." Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star's appearance. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage." After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were over-joyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Second Reading Letter of St. Paul to Ephesians 3:2-3, 5-6
Brothers and sisters: You have heard of the stewardship of God's grace that was given to me for your benefit, namely, that the mystery was made known to me by revelation. It was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
The Epiphany of the Lord January 3, 2021
FOCUS: The Epiphany points the way toward life.
Today the Church celebrates the Epiphany of the Lord: the manifestation to the Gentiles (in the persons of the Magi) of the life of God himself. God, who in the person of Jesus, shared in our humanity in order to allow us to share in his divinity forever. Like the Magi, each person’s journey to Christ has its own direction and trail; and for each who pays Christ homage and offers the treasures one holds, the reward is the same: a path away from the dangers of sin and death and toward life.
LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, the prophet Isaiah calls the people to rise up because the light (God) has come and they will praise the Lord with overflow-ing hearts. In St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, we hear that the mystery which was not revealed to other generations has been made known and that all are co-heirs and co-partners in the work and promises of Christ. Today’s Gospel is the ac-count of the Magi who journey far as they seek out the long-awaited Christ, encountering King Herod in Jerusalem along the way, and then finding the child Jesus in Bethlehem. REFLECTION: Foreigners led to the Christ child’s home do him homage. National boundaries and differences dissolve when we respond to God’s invitation to come to Christ. We are always welcome into God’s presence and in gratitude our commitment is to Christian hospitality throughout this year – to welcome visitors as we would welcome Christ. So we ask ourselves:
How do I practice hospitality?
Have I ever been treated as an outsider?
Do I treat any people or groups as outsiders?
#179 4
Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
(all bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I con-fess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Dear God, Thank you for helping us to make it through this difficult year. Thank you that you’ve carried us through the uncer-tainty of deep waters, through the flames of trials, and
through the pain of hard losses. We are constantly aware of how much we need you, your grace, your strength, your power working through even the toughest days.
Help us to remember that the gift of Christ, Immanuel, is our greatest treasure, not just at Christmas, but for the whole year through. Fill us with your joy and the peace of your Spirit. Direct our hearts and minds towards you. Thank you for your reminder that both in seasons of celebration and in seasons of brokenness, you’re still with us. For you never leave us. Thank you for your daily powerful Presence in our lives, that we can be assured your heart is towards us, your eyes are over us, and your ears are open to our prayers. Thank you that you surround us with favor as with a shield, and we are safe in your care.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
Roman Catholic High School is pleased to announce the following students from our parish have achieved Academic Honors for
the First Quarter of 2020-2021. First Honors: William Wranovsky
Second Honors: Thomas Hirst, Joshua Iamuri, Edward Kiely, Andy Cruz, Christopher McLaughlin, Ryan O’Neill
Saint Cecilia School NewsThroughout the years, many foun-dations and organizations have provided financial assistance to the students and their families attending our school. We want to acknowledge them and share with you the amount of their generosi-ty. For the 2020-2021 school year the following have provided sup-
port to our students and their families.
Children’s Scholarship Fund Philadelphia $170,756.38 BLOCS $37,750 Archdiocese of Phila. Superintendent’s Grant $1,000 BRIDGE $2.500 Foundation for Catholic Education $5,000 Heritage of Faith—Vision of Hope $8,800 St. Cecilia Memorial $13,316 Sponsor a Student $13,344 Colleen P. Smith Foundation $825 Anonymous Donors $2,000 In addition to the above, there was COVID Relief Aid from BRAVO, Foundation Ambassador, BLOCS, and Children’s Scholarship Fund Phila. amounting to $96,913.
More than half our students have received assistance from these wonderful organizations. We also have Lisa Hnat, our Tuition Coordinator to thank for seeking out much of this assistance for our families.
So many of our families sacrifice to send their children to a Catholic school and if it wasn’t for all these foundations working tirelessly to gather these funds, this would not be possible. So, we take this time to say ‘Thank You’ to the many people who help our students and their families.
Now that you have your 2021 calendar ~ here are some dates to remember……
