Dear Friends in Christ,

Peace and Joy to you and your loved ones!

I am sorry. I am sorry if you had a hard time reading my letter last weekend with that bold, strong, aggressive font. It was quite a painful experience for me, too. Glad that I did not have my eyes examined after. The prescription grade would have doubled.

I am sorry. This is also the theme of this weekend’s Parable of the Prodigal Son. We all know the story. It is a story of a repentant child given the gift of unconditional reconciliation with the boundless love of His Father, just like Our Father. It is also a story of the elder’s son divisive selfishness.

The elder son reminds us of our collective and universal need for a metanoia, a change of heart and mind, by knowing, appreciating and experiencing God’s constant and consistent offer to those who are truly repentant—His forgiveness and mercy. It is also a reminder for us to look inside ourselves and consider how we could sometimes block the unity and reconciliation of our family—in our homes, in Church and in our society at large.

I am sorry. This is not just the Prodigal Son expressing his sorrow for the sins he did. This is also the elder son’s anguish and pain. In the light of God’s mercy that wipes out sin, each one of us is at the same time prodigal son and elder brother.

Echoing again our reminders for Confession, please know that you are in my intentions this Lenten season in all the devotional works I do. May we be truly sorry for our sins, like the Prodigal Son, and long for the embrace of our Loving Father as we seek to follow the way of our Lord Jesus.

Blessings and regards, Fr. PJ P.S. With all the Confession Days and Times posted for our Cohort 17 parishes, Fr. Nolan said to me last week that we hope that there will be no sinners left in our area by Easter Time. :) From his lips to God’s. Amen. Take care always!

Mini Meditation

Penitential Acts

“The conversion of the heart cannot fail to include penitence. In a certain sense, this is the essential element. Penitence means a profound change of heart under the influence of the word of God. It is a commitment to restore the equilibrium and harmony shattered by sin and therefore the change direction even at the cost of sacrifice. The resolutions of conversion and repentance in order to be authentic and enduring must be translated into concrete penitential acts.”

St. John Paul II

Here’s One Positive Encouragement

From your fellow parishioner

When you pray the Hail Mary, and say “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee”, do you think about giving thanks to Mary for her courage as a young woman for accepting to receive the Holy Spirit? When you say “Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus”, do you give thanks to Mary for keeping and protecting Jesus so that he may grow up to show us the way and guide us from evil? When you say “Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death”, do you totally believe that we need Mary to intercede with her Son for us? Remember, all must go through the Son (Jesus) to get to the Father. It is nice to know you have someone else on your side, to help and vouch for you.

THE SEVEN ELEMENTS OF PARISH LIFE

The essence of parish life is formed by seven essenal elements:

Evangelizaon, Worship, Word, Community, Service, Stewardship and Leadership.

These elements constantly interrelate in parish life, each nurturing and supporng The other, with the communal celebraon of Sunday Eucharist at the center.

SERVICE

Service encompasses our natural response to living the Gospel message. We cannot come to know Christ without being forever changed. Through our conversion we are called upon to be of service to others for God has no hands but our own. The Church is called to serve the needs of others and eliminate the causes of injusce. “Service” therefore includes the elements of both charity and jusce. Far from being a burden to parish life, social ministry is part of what keeps a parish alive, making it truly Catholic and reflecng the Gospel mission of service to others.

Descriptors of Service in Parish Life: 1. The parish focuses on the needs of the human community, beginning with its own members and

extending to the poor and marginalized in the local area, the naon and the world. 2. The parish makes every effort to accommodate persons with special needs. 3. Organizaons within the parish systemacally address parcular human needs by sponsoring

projects such as food pantries, shelters for the homeless and job assistance for the unemployed, or by supporng other parishes or agencies which have these services.

 4. Programs that minister to the sick, the bereaved, and the homebound are ongoing. 5. The parish parcipates in local, naonal, and internaonal helping efforts. 6. Formaon efforts at all levels integrate Catholic social teaching. 7. Parcipaon in polical acon, vong in local and naonal elecons, involvement in policy-making at

local, state, and naonal levels is encouraged. 8. Racial and ethnic harmony, peacemaking and non-violence, respect for life at all stages, and the

pracce of the spiritual and corporal works of mercy are priority areas for study and acon in the parish. 9. Opportunies for collaborave ecumenical acvity in the local area are sought out.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fr. P.J. and the OLOH Pastoral Council would appreciate your feedback. Please check the box next to the number of the descriptor if you see or experience these descriptors of community being “lived out” in our parish. You may drop your feedback (cutout from the bullen for your convenience) in the “ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS” box in the back of church at your convenience. Thank you for your connued support of our parish programs and ministries.
