April 23, 2017 Mercy Sunday
Dear parishioners:
Congratulations to our 31 new Catholics! They were baptized and confirmed on
Easter Vigil. Continue to pray for them as they grow in faith and understanding dur-
ing the Mystagogia (Easter Season.)
April 30th is Announcement Sunday for the Archbishops’ Catholic Appeal. May we
be channels of God’s love and compassion for all people by donating to the 2017
Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal which funds ministries that offer hope and assistance
to many. Please visit www.Archden.Org/Give Today or call 202-715-3111 to make

Sunday, May 7 is the 30th anniversary of Deacon Sid Atencio’s ordination to the deacon-

Dana Garcia will host this event.
The Altar and Rosary and Knights of Columbus will host the Central West Deanery Meet-
ing on May 16th at the rectory. It will be a cookout in the yard,
The pastoral council is planning a retreat for next Lent with Richard Deanda. He will con-
duct meditations on the Cross of Christ. They are also looking into emergency prepared-
ness training and support of the Villa Park neighborhood action group.
I am celebrating my 50th Anniversary as a priest on Friday, May 19th at a 5:30 p.m. mass.
If you didn’t receive anything in the mail you can RSVP for the dinner following the mass
by calling Julie Harris at 303-534-4882 Ex.118. Limited seating – first come first served.
We are now collecting money for the new floor in St. Joseph Hall, recently installed. Our
thanks to Mike Brito and his crew of volunteers for the work. We also wish to thank Mark
Cordova for painting St. Joseph Hall and Deacon Geno for the new chairs.
Families asking for infant baptism must make sure that godparents (padrinos) are
married in the church and are confirmed. Parents must be registered in the parish.

the Jewish, Islamic and Christian traditions which you will encounter on the pilgrimage.

Fr. Ed
Divine Mercy and Pro-life Pope Saint John Paul II declared the Sunday after Easter to be Divine Mercy Sunday. Many of the faithful pray the Chaplet of Di-vine Mercy regularly. There is a link between this devotion and the pro-life movement. Fr. Seraphim Michalenko, MIC, who was a prin-cipal translator of St. Faustina's diary, and the postulator of her cause of canonization, writes the following: "On at least three occasions, from 8:00-11:00 in the evening, she felt like her insides were being torn apart. She suf-fered so much that she thought she was going to die. The doctors couldn't figure out what was ailing her, and no medication was able to alleviate her sufferings. Later, she was given to understand that she was undergoing those pains for mothers who were aborting their children (Diary, 1276). "On another occa-sion, she had a vision of an angel coming with thunderbolts to destroy one of the most beau-tiful cities of her country. And she felt power-less to do anything about it (Diary, 474). What antidote did the Lord give her? The Chaplet of Divine Mercy. [She explained] that the city was to be chastised for its sins, pri-marily the sin of abortion." ("Wombs of Mer-cy," Marian Helpers Bulletin, Summer 1995, p.13).
Today – Divine Mercy Sunday – we are called to reflect upon Christ’s immeasura-ble mercy. Let us be imitators of Christ by showing mercy and compassion to others through a gift to the 2017 Arch-bishop’s Catholic Appeal which will fund ministries that ease the burdens of many. Please visit www.Archden.Org/GiveToday or call 303.715.3111 to make your gift today.
