One of the greatest hazards of silane is that its behavior in air is unpredictable. Five things can happen:

– Nothing – Brown or white powder formation – Intermittent popping sounds—”poppers” – Immediate ignition-fire – Delayed Ignition-fire/explosion

Under the same conditions different results can occur

Shutdown or abrupt reduction in flow can cause ignition in atmosphere

The majority of our systems utilized vac-silane (14 tools).

Finalize conceptual design for filing permits with Town.

Work with local officials to educate them on ADI’s proposed risk reduction initiative (buy-in).

Solicit feedback from town officials.

EDUCATE, Educate, educate.

ATS identified 168 requirements after a thorough code review. The referenced codes and guidelines pertaining to silane gas storage and distribution are below:

ANSI/CGA-G-13 -- 2006 (American National Standards Institute / Compressed Gas Association) – Storage and Handling of Silane and Silane Mixtures;

FM Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheets 7-7 – Semiconductor Fabrication SEMI S18 – 1102 – Environmental , Health and Safety Guideline for Silane Family Gases Handling; NFPA 318 -- Standard for the Protection of Semiconductor Fabrication Facilities NFPA 55 -- Compressed Gases and Cryogenic Fluids Code; International Fire Code: Chapter 18 (Semiconductor Fabrication Facilities), Chapter 27 (Hazardous Materials – General Provisions), Chapter 30 (Compressed Gases) and Chapter 41 (Pyrophoric Materials); and Massachusetts Building and Fire Codes. SEMI S18
