FROM THE STUDY WINDOW

Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth. 2Worship the LORD with gladness; come into his presence with singing.

3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he that made us, and we are his;

we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 4Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise.

Give thanks to him, bless his name. 5For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever,

and his faithfulness to all generations.

The 100th

Psalm encourages us to worship and praise God. Unfortunately as we enter the summer

season there is a temptation to skip worship and do other things. To counter this temptation we need to

give thought to the benefits of worship. Following are eight reasons to make worship a regular part of

your summer schedule.

1. Worship brings hope. It helps us to see over the wall of circumstances which restricts our vision to

our problems.

2. Worship counters self-centeredness. It moves us beyond ourselves and helps us think about God.

3. Worship reminds us of important values we tend to forget. It reminds us of the importance of loving

people rather than things, the importance of forgiving rather than resenting, and the importance of

serving rather than being served.

4. Worship strengthens courage. In the words of Isaiah 40, “Those who wait upon the Lord shall renew

their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall

walk and not faint.”

5. Worship gives us the opportunity to express thanksgiving. “Praise God from whom all blessings

flow” retains its popularity as a worship resource because it is among the most basic instincts of

human nature.

6. Worship brings a sense of forgiveness. It helps us to let go of our dangerous fixations on our

imperfections and failures.

7. Worship renews our faith. Without continual reminders our awareness of God’s grace and love slips

into the background.

8. Worship is a transcendent experience, which helps Gods call us out of what we are to what we are

yet to become. The insight and motivation necessary for growth in faith often comes from worship.

Worship has a unique ability to strengthen, repair and refocus our lives. I invite and encourage you to

make worship attendance a part of your weekly schedule during the summer and throughout the year.

Music Notes William Memmott

Our culture traditionally prescribes rest in the summertime. It's

vacation time (except for agricultural types). In a way July is

our most restful month. After all, it's the seventh month of the

year. Didn't the Lord tell us to rest on the Sabbath (the seventh

day of the week)? Of course, in celebration of the Resurrection

occurring on the first day of the week, we have moved our

Lord's Day to Sunday. Often, for church musicians (especially

those who do composing and arranging for seasonal

celebrations), July is often our busiest month.

The message seems to be: enjoy your rest. But in your

restoration, don't forget to worship regularly. That's a feature of

our modern culture that baffles me. I believe that the first day

in the house of the Lord should be a first priority. As my father

would say, "Now, let's take up the offering, sing a hymn and go

for lunch."

As always, singers and instrumentalists: you are invited to join

us in making Sunday music. See if you have a dormant

talent. You might just surprise yourself (and us). Join us for

rehearsals (choir on Wednesday nights at 7:15 and Sundays at

10:30; orchestra on Sundays at 10:30).

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

VBS 2012 is July 23 – July 27 from 9 a.m. until 12:00 p.m for ages three through 5th Grade. Our theme is “Operation Overboard: Dare to go deep with God.” Our key scripture is “Faith is the reality of what we hope for, the proof of what we don’t see,” Hebrews 11:1. At Operation Overboard, children discover five “ocean insights” they can take to live as followers of God - Depend on God, Dare to Care, Claim Jesus, Choose to Follow and Change the World. These will be shared using Bible stories including Noah Depends on God, The Disciples choosing to Follow Jesus, and Paul Delivering the Good news.

Each day the children will experience the story and ocean insight through science, crafts, music, story, and mission. Make your summer plans and join us for VBS.

Registration is available online at www.johncalvinchurch.org Cost for the week is $15 JCPC members and $25 non-members. Checks can be mailed or dropped off at the church Att: VBS Registration. Friends and relatives are welcome. And we are looking for interested adults who might want to share their time at VBS also so let us know if you would be willing to serve. Valerie Corcoran and Linda Lowry are directing and would love to talk to you about volunteering.
