Of this union were born two sons, Joseph and John, of whom the first was mentioned as a minor in his father's will in 1589 and died before 1603, without issue. John, the younger of the last-mentioned brothers, then succeeded to the family estates. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Fulforde or Fulford and sister of Sir Francis Fulford, Knight, and had issue by her of Ursula (died young), Thomas, Elizabeth (died young), another Ursula, Anne, another Elizabeth, and Bridget.

Generation One

1. John "Berryman" Berriman, born about 1632 in England, died 1680 in Westmoreland County, Virginia USA, buried in Westmoreland County, Virginia USA.

THE NAME AND FAMILY OF BERRYMAN The name of BERRYMAN is generally said by historians and etymologists to be derived

from the residence of its first bearers within a borough or township, that is, from a "borough-man", which was corrupted to "bury-man". It also possible, however, that the first bearer of the name occupied some prominent position in the borough, such as that of "borough-reeve", and thus took his name from his occupation. It is found on ancient English and early American records in the various forms of Buryman, Burryman, Buriman, Burriman, Borroughman, Boroughman, Borrowman, Borowman, Birriman, Biriman, Birryman, Biryman, Boryman, Borryman, Berieman, Berrieman, Berman, Beriman, Beryman, Berriman, Berryman, and others, of which the last spelling mentioned is that most generally accepted in America today, while that immediately preceding it is also occasionally used.

Families bearing this name, in all of its many variants, were to be found at early dates in the

English Counties of Somerset, Devon, and Gloucester, as we as in the city and vicinity of London. These families were, for the most part, of the landed gentry and yeomanry of Great Britain.

Among the earliest definite records of the family in England are those of Robert Buryman,

who was living in Somersetshire in the reign of King Edward the Third, of England (1327-1377); and those of William Buryman, of Somersetshire during the same period. Later records of this Somersetshire line include those of Hugh Birriman or Berriman, who was living there about 1615, and those of numerous others as well; but the records are only fragmentary.

Of the Devonshire branch of the family in England, one Beryman (also recorded as Beriman

and Berriman on the ancient documents), whose Christian name is not known, was living at "Berrie", in that County, before the year 1540. He was the father of a son named John and a daughter named Elizabeth, of whom the latter married one Glawen, of Wales. John Ber(r) yman or Ber(r) iman, of Devonshire, married Elinor, who was either the daughter or the widow of one Upcott or Upcot.

The Gloucestershire branch of the family was represented in 1587 by one Samuel Beriman or Berriman, whose records are not, however, complete. About the beginning of the eighteenth century, if not before, a family of the name settled at London, England. "Mister" (then a title of respect, indicating considerable means and position) John Berryman was living there in 1732, and at a slightly later date records were to be found of Elizabeth Berriman or Berryman and of Margaret "Borrowman":.

While it is not definitely known from which of the numerous branches of the family in the

British IsIes the first emigrants of the name to America traced their descent, it appears from old records that the Berrymans were among the earliest British settlers in colonial America.

The first of the name in America was probably that William Berriman who came from

England to Virginia in 1648 and settled in Northampton County. No record has been found, however, concerning his immediate family or descendants.

(A) About 1654 (some family historians give the date as 1650) one John Berriman or

Berryman came from England and made his home in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He married a Miss Jane Tucker and was the father by her of at least one son, named Benjamin Berryman, According to certain records, the immigrant john also resided for a time in Accomao County, Virginia, but this is not certain.

The BERRYMAN line is a line of Isabella McKENDREE, wife of Thomas McCARLEY.

Isabella McKENDREE McCARLEY's grandmother was Rosa Berryman TALIAFERRO, the wife of Capt. Joseph LOVING. She was named for her own grandmother, Rose BERRYMAN, the wife of Capt. Richard TALIAFERRO.

A.) The Ancestry of John Berryman, Immigrant. My greatest disappointment in coming back to genealogy after laying it aside for five or six

years was that my pet theory, my favorite line, had perhaps gone out of favor. Neither line, so far as I know, is proven. The first, the one I loved, for reasons I'll explain, was through John BERYMAN of Berri.

John BERYMAN of Berri died January 16, 1588/9, and his will was probated April 21, 1592.

He lived in the town of Berri which is in Devonshire in England. He had a sister who was married to a man whose surname was GLAWEN, and she was living in 1589. I know nothing further about his ancestry or family.

John married a woman named Eleanor who may have had the maiden name of Eleanor

DARE and was the widow of a man named UPCOTT. They had at least two children. Joseph BERYMAN, the eldest son, was still a minor at his father's death in 1589, and he died before May 1, 1603. His brother John I believe to be the ancestor of Isabella McKENDREE.

That John BERYMAN of Berri married Elizabeth FULFORD. John was born between 1571 and 1582, was the sole surviving son of his father of the same name and took the family arms. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Thomas FULFORD of Great Fulford. In response to the visitations of the County of Devon in 1620, John set out the nature and extent of his family. He told of the following children:

Ursula BERYMAN, baptized May 11, 1606, buried July 7, 1606 at Dunsford. Thomas BERYMAN, baptized September 27, 1609, buried November 5, 1609, at Dunsford. Elizabeth BERYMAN, baptized January 9, 1611/12 at Bovey Tracey; died an infant. Ursula BERYMAN, born about 1613; married George PLUMLEIGH August 14, 1645 at

Dunsford. Anne BERYMAN, buried August 21, 1617 at Dunsford. Elizabeth BERYMAN, baptized March 27, 1619 at Dunsford, living in 1620, aged 1 1/2. Bridget BERYMAN, baptized February 24, 1621/2, buried June 28, 1622 at Dunsford. This is the end of the list which was signed by J. BERYMAN in 1620 (listing his then two

living children) and those that were identified by Lt. Col. VIVIAN from the Dunsford Parish Register and the Bovey Tracey Parish Register. Obviously, in looking through the list of children, it's difficult to find the father of the John BERRYMAN who came to America in 1654.

However, Willie Catherine IVEY and/or Charles TALIAFERRO state that John BERRI of

Berri and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Thomas FULFORD, were the grandparents of that John BERRYMAN.

A neat old line, yes? Just why was I so disappointed, though, to lose it for an equally old line

as I'll explain shortly? Because of the simple statement that John BERYMAN of Berri married Elizabeth Fulford, daughter of Sir Thomas FULFORD of Great Fulford.

About seven miles southwest of Exeter, currently shown as Dunsford on the maps, is Great

Fulford, the cite of the residence of the FULFORD family since before the Norman Invasion of England at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The family arms have changed since that time, since as the brotherless daughters of landed gentry married into the family, their crests were merged with that of the FULFORDS. The motto of the family is "Bear up." Writing in 1846, after mentioning that the FULFORDS had continued in possession of the same name, in the male line, by uninterrupted descent during a period of more than six hundred years, John BURKE said, "The mansion, which is a quadrangular pile of building, is still in good repair, though one of the most ancient in the west of England, standing in a park well diversified with fine timber, and with extensive woods and plantations around it. This house was garrisoned for CHARLES I, and was taken by a part of FAIRFAX's army under the command of Col. OKEY, in Dec. 1645."[COMMENT-1]

WILLIAM the Conqueror set up the system that gives us our first recorded mention of the FULFORDS of Great Fulford. That was the Domesday Book, a record of the combination census and appraisal that informed the king of the nature and extent of his dominion and who the landed subjects ready for his taxation were.

Before the most famous of the FULFORDS, Sir Baldwin FULFORD, there are two detailed

genealogies, both rather impressive but quite disparate. BURKE and Westcote's DEVON describe the line thus:

William de FULFORD, who held Fulford in the time of Richard I (Richard the Lion-Hearted,

King of England from 1189 to 1199) left a son Nicholas FULFORD, of Fulford, father of William FULFORD, of Fulford, who married MARIOT, daughter and coheir of Sir

BALDWIN de Belston, of Parham, Devon. They had Henry FULFORD, of Fulford, whose son, William FULFORD, of Fulford, was father of John FULFORD, of Fulford, who had a son Sir Henry FULFORD, of Fulford, living in the time of EDWARD III, (King of England from 1327 to 1377) said by Bishop GODWIN to have sat in judgment with Chief-justice GASCOYNE, and condemned Archbishop SCROPE to be beheaded. He was succeeded by his son, Henry FULFORD, of Fulford, who married the daughter and heir of FITZURSE, of Williston, Somerset, by whom he had Sir Baldwin FULFORD, of Fulford, sheriff of Devon in 1460, Knight of the Sepulchre, and Under Admiral to Holland, Duke of Exeter, High Admiral of England.

It is at the point of Sir Baldwin that the two genealogies come together, but before that there

is nothing in common. The 1620 Visitations of the County of Devon for the purpose of proving who had the right to titles and arms show that Andrew FULFORD signed a statement of the following pedigree:

Edmondus FULFORD of Fulford, in County Devon, had a son Johannes FULFORD of

Fulford, his son and heir, who married Alicia, daughter and coheir of Radi FITZURSE, son and heir of Reginaldi de FITZURSE Mil. Johannes and Alicia had a son Henricus FULFORD of Fulford, their son and heir, and his son William FULFORD of Fulford was his. William was father of William FULFORD of Fulford, and his son and heir was Thomas FULFORD of Fulford, whose wife was daughter and heir of MOURTON.

Their son was John FULFORD of Fulford, whose son and heir was Henry FULFORD of

Fulford, married to WILLMOT, daughter and heir of Phillippi BRIAN. This couple are the parents of Sir Baldwin.

So the lines are totally different except for the name of the father, but not the mother, of Sir

Baldwin. The Visitations show the children of Henry and WILLMOT as (1) Sir Baldwin FULFORD of

Fulford, (2) William FULFORD, second son who was a priest, (3) and Katherine, a daughter who married first Ralph PRYE and second John GLYNN of Morvell.

Sir Baldwin FULFORD, who had the titles stated earlier, was described by PRINCE as "a great soldier and a traveller of so undaunted resolution, that, for the honor and liberty of a royal lady, in a castle besieged by the infidels, he fought a combat with a Sarazen; for bulk and bigness an unequal match, (as the representation of him cut in the wainscot in Fulford Hall doth plainly show,) whom yet he vanquished, and rescued the lady." Sir Baldwin married Elizabeth or Janet, daughter and co-heiress of John BOSOME of Bosomseal in Dittisham by wife Rosamond, daughter and heir of John St. GEORGE of Lapford.

They were the parents of nine children, of whom the oldest son and heir was Sir Thomas FULFORD of Fulford who married Phillippa, daughter of Sir Philip COURTENEY of Powderham. The COURTENEYS are a powerful family and it's about three easy steps back to Elizabeth PLANTAGENET, daughter of EDWARD I, King of England. Thomas and Phillippa were the parents of seven children. After Thomas died February 20, 1489, the oldest son and heir succeeded him but, when he died without children, the property passed to the second son William FULFORD of Fulford. William, was married to Joan (a), daughter of John BONVILE of Combe Raleigh and his wife Alicia DENNIS. William died August 23, 1517, and the family estate passed to the eldest of his five sons.

Sir John FULFORD was at least fourteen at the time of the death of his father. Sir John was

named Sheriff of Devon in the 26th and 32nd years of Henry VIII's reign. He died November 14, 1544, having married Dorothea BOURCHIER, of noble ancestry, being the daughter of John BOURCHIER, Count of Bath. And his lineage?

THOMAS of WOODSTOCK, Duke of Gloucester, Knight of the Garter, and Constable of

England, was born January 7, 1355/6 and murdered September 8, 1397. He married Eleanor, daughter of Humphrey de BOHUN, descendant of the Humphrey de BOHUN who was a Magna Carta Surety. They were the parents of Anne PLANTAGENET, wife of William BOURCHIER. Their son, William BOURCHIER, married Thomasine HANCKFORD, and they were the parents of Sir Fulke BOURCHIER. He married Elizabeth DYNHAM, and their son, John, Third Baron BOURCHIER, married Cecilia d'AUBENEY. Their daughter was the Lady Dorothy BOURCHIER who married Sir John FULFORD.

John and Dorothea had six children, including Faith FULFORD who on September 27, 1582,

married Captain John DAVIES, "the great circumnavigator." The eldest son and heir was Sir John FULFORD, named Sheriff of Devon in the 5th year of Queen Mary's reign and in the 19th year of Elizabeth's. He was twenty at the death of his father and served as executor of his father's will. John married first Anna, daughter of Sir Thomas DENNIS of Holcomb who was the mother of his children. John died August 23, 1580. Among their ten children, the heir was Sir Thomas FULFORD of Fulford. Sir Thomas FULFORD of Fulford was twenty seven at the death of his father. He married Ursula, daughter of Richard BAMFIELD of Poltimore on or about October 10, 1580. Thomas died July 31, 1610, and Ursula died in 1639. They had four daughters and two sons. The second daughter was Elizabeth, wife of John BERYMAN of Berrie. [COMMENT-2]

Given free rein, I'd trace the family back to Charlemagne and beyond, but you can certainly see now why I'm disappointed that others believe this is not actually my line. I always knew of the weak link.

But it was great fun. However, I don't think that John BERYMAN of Berri married far from his class, so it may be

I can find such links to the families married to his kinsmen who others now think constitute the correct line.

The second option for the line leading to John Berryman, Immigrant, based in large part as I

understand it on Chris Klinedinst research, is this: The ancestors of William on the Berryman side, listed in parenthesis after his name in the

message I posted before, were 1) Benjamin Berryman, b. 7 December 1670 in Westmoreland County, Virginia, m. Elizabeth? Bet. 1707-08 in Westmoreland County, d. bet. 4-27 August 1729 in Westmoreland County; 2) John Berryman, b. abt. 1617 in Tiverton, Devon, England, m. Elnor Slee and perhaps two other wives during his life (perhaps an Elizabeth and perhaps Jane Baldridge, both in America), d. bef. 28 April 1680 in Westmoreland County; 3) Daniell Berryman, b. in Tiverton, m. 26 July 1605 in Tiverton to Elizabeth Sparrowe; 4) Daniell Berryman, b. in Barn staple, Devon, England.[COMMENT-3]

Chris Klinedinst <mailto:[email protected]> states that his research, soon to be

documented in book form, says this is correct is that John BERRYMAN was born in Iverton in 1617, the son of Daniel BERRYMAN (Jr.) but that he did not marry Elnor SLEE. Instead, she was his mother. Daniel (the father) was not born in Tiverton but Barn staple. John's grandparents were Danyell BERRYMAN, born in Northam, and Elizabeth SPARROWE, of Barnstable.

He married (1) Jane Tucker, 16 Jul 1678, born about 1635, died 16 Jul 1678. Jane:. Children: 2. i. Capt. Benjamin Berryman born 7 Dec 1670. He married (2) Jane BALDRIDGE (daughter of James BALDRIDGE and Dorothy), died in

Westmoreland County, Virginia. Jane:

Generation Two

2. Capt. Benjamin Berryman, born 7 Dec 1670 in Westmoreland County, Virginia USA, died W P 27 Aug 1729 in Westmoreland County, Virginia USA, and military 1776 Revolutionary War.

His father died while he was yet a boy. When his step-mother remarried, it

was not a pleasant experience for Benjamin. He had lots of difficulties with John Harvey who did not want to give him the property he had inherited from his father. The matter stayed in the courts for several years and it was 1794 before the dispute was settled and Benjamin received his estate.

Rose BERRYMAN TALIAFERRO, the oldest child of Benjamin and Elizabeth, makes note

that she was raised among 22 children which leads us to believe that several children died and some may have been from other families.

In 1714 Benjamin served as Justice of the Peace and Coroner in Westmoreland County, VA.

He was a tobacco farmer and owned many slaves as evidenced in his will. He also operated a Water Grist Mill on Machodoc Creek. A great deal of land was purchased as evidenced in the deeds and he was able to leave all of his children with good inheritances. He left the distribution of the Slaves to Elizabeth who, at her death, left instructions in her will to distribute them among the children.

It is believed that Benjamin and Elizabeth are buried at the Ivy Point/White Hall property

which is now located in King George County, Virginia. Benjamin died in 1729. His WILL was recorded 28th day of August 1729, Westmoreland Co,

VA. James was given the Home Place, at "White Hall" in King George Co, VA, and the Water Grist Mill.

Elizabeth's WILL was proved 22 day of February 1763 in Westmoreland Co, VA. He married (1) Sarah BLAGDON (daughter of John BLAGDON and Sarah BLAGDON),

died 1700. Sarah: Benjamin BERRYMAN was born to John BERRYMAN and his second wife Jane

BALDRIDGE about the time of the father's death in 1680. He held many offices in the Colony of Virginia, including Justice of the Peace in Westmoreland County, a post to which Queen Anne appointed him in 1703, and Sheriff of Westmoreland County, to which post Governor Alex SPOTTSWOOD appointed him in 1719. He was an attorney in Stafford and King George Counties. He was both a captain and a major, but most references in literature are to him as "Capt. Benjamin BERRYMAN." Augustine WASHINGTON, the father of George WASHINGTON, was a Justice of the Peace in Westmoreland County at the same time Benjamin was.

3. Benjamin Berryman, Jr, born 1693, died 1748/49. He married Sarah Bushrod (daughter of John Bushrod and Hannah Keene). 4. Elizabeth Berryman, born ca 1699, died 1734. She married (1) William Newton. She married (2) Charnock Cox, Jr. 5. Anne Berryman, born ca 1698, died ca 1750. She married (1) John Burch, ca. 1714. She married (2) Quesenberry, July 1729. She married (3) Blackwell, 1732. 6. John Berryman, born 1700. John BERRYMAN, born in 1700, married Behethland GILSON and died before he became

of age, leaving an only son, Gilson BERRYMAN who died April 4, 1749. The given name of Behethland came from her ancestor, Captain Robert BEHETHLAND, who came to Virginia with John SMITH in 1607. Rose BERRYMAN TALIAFERRO named a daughter for her sister-in-law and the name was passed on in the TALIAFERRO family for several generations.

He married Behethland GILSON. 7. Rose Berryman, born ca 1708, died 1763 in Westmoreland County, Virginia USA. She married Richard Taliaferro, 10 Jun 1726 in Saint Paul's Parish, King George, Virginia

USA (son of John Taliaferro and Sara Smith). 8. Frances Berryman, born ca 1710 in Washington Parish, Virginia USA, died bf 28 Jun 1759 in

Saint Paul's Parish, Stafford, Virginia USA, and buried St Paul's Parish in Stafford, Virginia USA.

11. Elizabeth BERRYMAN, born abt 1714. 12. Newton Berryman, born circa 1715. Died before he came of age. 13. James Berryman, born 1716, died 1773. He married Sarah Dishman, 1752 (daughter of John Dishman and Francis Sandford). 14. Henry Berryman, born circa 1718. Died before he came of age. 15. Maximilian Berryman, born 1719 in Westmoreland County, Virginia USA, died W P 22 Jun

1812 in Fauquier County, Virginia USA. Maximilian Berryman was born into the home of Benjamin BERRYMAN and Elizabeth NEWTON sometime before 1729 when Benjamin signed his will. It is believed that he was one of the youngest of the large family of children of Benjamin and Elizabeth. The Berrymans who lived in Westmoreland County, Virginia were quite wealthy in land and slaves as evidenced in Benjamin's will. The property that Maximilian inherited from his father was in King George County, Virginia at a "place called the Marsh." This land is located just southwest of the Warrenton-Fauquier Airport on Route 602. Although we do not know exactly when he went to Fauquier County, we believe it was quite early. The county was organized in 1759 and we feel sure that he was there at that time.

He married Mary TALIAFERRO, the daughter of Robert TALIAFERRO and Elizabeth

MATHEWS and had at least one son old enough to serve in the Revolutionary War. Robert died in 1777 and his father was appointed administrator for his estate. In Maximilian's will he named one group of children who "has received their full part and proportion of my estate both real and personally".

Maximilian was the appraiser for many of the estates in Fauquier County which makes us

believe that he was a businessman with a good sense of value. Maximilian died sometime between 22 May 1812 when he signed his will and 22 June 1812 when it was proved. The executor for his will was his grandson William, obviously the son of one of Maximilian's older sons.

Zachariah died before 17 May when His brother filed administration for him. Hannah died

before August 1815 when William Berryman filed administration for her estate. He married (1) Mary TALIAFERRO, ca 1739 (daughter of Robert TALIAFERRO, Sr and

Elizabeth Mathews).

1832 in Madison County, Georgia USA, buried Berryman-Bragg Cemetery in Madison County, Georgia USA.

Charles married Nancy TATE, 13 November 1787, Surry County, NC. Perhaps she

is the mother of two of the children Charles named in his will: 1. Maximilian Robertson SMITH. 2. Mollie Taliaferro BERRYMAN, married George BRAGG, 1 January 1811, divorced,

1840. Not sure if Nancy Tate was also (HANEY) Charles Berryman's first wife. In May 1804 Charles posted a notice that he was leaving Fauquier Co and that he would pay

anyone what he owed them and expected anyone who owed him to pay him. This instrument and one of recommendation signed by many of the leading citizens of Fauquier Co, Virginia was filed in Elbert County, Georgia.

In 1807 Charles was a resident of Elbert Co and drew Lot No 198 in the 7th District of

Wilkinson Co in the Land Lottery. He received land grants in Elbert Co and acquired a great deal of land in the Harrison District of Madison Co, Georgia.

The WILL of Charles Berryman was recorded on the 25th of January 1832. Family tradition

is that he is buried in the old Berryman Cemetery located on the Abercrombie Farm in Madison Co, Georgia, very close to the Mill Shoal Baptist Church where many of the family attended church. No marker is there for him but two of his sons, Charles Tabor and Wilson Penn, are buried in this cemetery.

After Charles died, Nancy married William Ballinger, the father-in-law of her daughter

Betsy Caroline. Nancy died after 1860 but it is unknown exactly when she died or where she is buried.

He married (1) Nancy Haney, 23 Jun 1795 in Charlotte County, Virginia USA.

Sarah: Sarah C Bowers also went by Sallie C Bowers Royston Cemetery Has Grave of Veteran Mule THE INDEPENDENT ANDERSON, SC NOVEMBER 04, 1950 p.5 BY GEORGE HITT Independent Correspondent ROYSTON, Ga., Nov. 3-One of the most interesting cemeteries is located about a mile and a

half below Royston on State Highway 281, probably better known as the "Wild Cat Bridge Road".

The little plot, which has probably no more than 25 graves, includes one of the family's pet

buggy mules that served more than 40 years; a hand-hewn granite tomb that rests on top of the ground containing the body of the man who made it, and a family of six who died in one of North Georgia's most gruesome tragedies.

A MARKER, no different from the ones for members of the family who are buried there,

bears this inscription: "Old Fly Mrs. S.C. Berryman's buggy mule-Hence this monument-foaled April 12, 1868, died April 17, 1908." On the reverse side of the marker is the quotation" A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast, but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel. Proverbs 12:10."

"Old Fly" belonged to Aunt Berryman who purchased her when she was five years old and

kept her until she (Aunt Sallie) died. "Old Fly" received her name because of her swiftness in her young days. Being so kind and gentle, and thought so much of by Mrs. Berryman and the family, who treated her as a pet, she was given this place in the family cemetery.

THE GRANITE tomb was made by John A. Berryman years before he died. Mr. Berryman,

who was the father of Harold Berryman of Royston and Arnold Berryman of Atlanta, had a horror of being buried in the ground. Out of two slabs of granite he hewed a vault and made a lid with the top piece, which is estimated to weigh 18,000 pounds. In anticipation of his death he bought his casket and burial clothes and carved the date of his death. February 12, 1925; however, he died a few months before his prophesy, but the date remains on the tomb as he inscribed it.

This cemetery in 1896 was the scene climaxing one of the most "ghastly tragedies" in the

history of North Georgia. According to an old newspaper item, July 23, 1896, "Thousands of people attended the burial of the murder-suicide victims here." The newspaper refers to the victims as "the Berryman family" mother and four children killed by the father who then committed suicide.

THE NEWSPAPER account of the horrible incident tells; "Berryman had evidently called his family together into the front room of the cottage, as they were found lying in a circle. It is supposed he first began the work of extermination with a pocket knife, as the throats of two of the children had been gashed and cut with the keen blade. Finding the work slow with the knife, he seized his double-barrel shotgun and deliberately fired its contents into the brain of his wife. Reloading his weapon, he continued his deadly work of destruction until all had been killed. Loading the gun for the last time, he rushed to the door in his frenzy and called to his nephew, who was passing, asking him to come in and see the final act in the tragedy. The kinsman passed on, laughing at what he supposed was his uncle's joke.

"BERRYMAN THEN entered the room and closed the door. Before him lay his entire

family, wife and four children, weltering in their blood. The ghastly sight drove him to inhuman madness, and rushing to the bed, he place the muzzle of the gun against his temple and pulled the trigger. "Excitement is running very high and pilgrimages are being made to the scene of the murder by people from great distances. The roads leading to the Berryman home are crowded with teams of all descriptions, and late tonight the house is surrounded by a motley crowd of men, and women and children."

No eye witnesses were left to tell the story, and the secret of this tragedy will perhaps never

be known. Thus, goes the story revealed in a small, out of the way, grave yard in Franklin County.

The Atlanta Constitution, Monday, July 27, 1896A MONSTROUS DEED - Dave Berryman

Kills Family ROYSTON - A crime bloodier than the Woolfolk murder, more appalling than the monstrous deed of Holmes, was committed in Madison county, five miles south of this place and between Elberton and Toccoa, late yesterday afternoon. Dave Berryman, a well-

Page 21: John Berryman Berriman and His Descendants - GeoCities · 1 John "Berryman" Berriman and His Descendants Generation One 1. John "Berryman" Berriman, born about 1632 in England, died

21

known farmer murdered his wife, shot down his four children and then blew out his own brains. The tragedy has no parallel in the criminal annals of the state. Just what caused the awful deed is not known, and perhaps will never will be, as no eye witness lives to tell the story. But it is supposed that Berryman, inflamed with intoxicants and enraged by the chiding of his wife because of his attentions to another woman, became suddenly insane and decided to annihilate his whole family. How well he succeeded. The front room of a pretty little cottage just at the foot of the Blue Ridge testifies. When the neighbors rushed in after the awful discovery was made, three of the little children were found on one side of the room piled in a mangled mass, their heads blown from their bodies. A few feet away lay the lacerated corpse of the mother, and across her breast was the body of her infant, its baby fingers clutching in death its mother's hair matted with gore. On the bed nearby was found the body of Berryman. After Killing his family he hit deliberately reloaded his gun; walked across the room, viewed the result of his horrible work, sat down upon the bed and emptied the contents of his breech loading gun into his own head. The discovery was made by a servant girl who was in the habit of milking for the Berryman family late every afternoon. It was the custom of one of the little tots to assist her in these duties. Missing him yesterday afternoon, she decided to go up to the house to find the cause of his absence. The horrible spectacle met her gaze as she entered the doorway. Just inside of the front room was a pool of blood, and spattered over the four walls was the brains of the murdered family. Appalled by the sickening sight, stunned for the moment at a scene she could scarcely realize as true the girl made her way to the nearest house and told of the horrible discovery she had made. The alarm was given. Hundreds gathered from all sections of the county.

Never before was such a scene witnessed in north Georgia. Old men accustomed to the scenes of carnage stood back, hesitating to enter the cottage. Women stood about wringing their hands and weeping hysterically. The rage of the people ran high at the awful deed, but there was no way to vent their anger. Someone mentioned the name of the woman with whom it was supposed Berryman had been intimate, and because of which intimacy it was thought he had quarreled with his wife. The crowd caught the name and surged in the direction of Royston but cooler heads prevailed and an additional horror was averted. The remains of the unfortunate family were removed to Royston at 1 o'clock this afternoon. Thousands who had gone to the scene of slaughter lined the roadway between Berryman's cottage and the town. As the two wagons laden with coffins passed through the drizzling rain, the people stood aside excitedly discussing the cause of the tragedy. BERRYMAN'S PAST LIFE Dave Berryman was a man well known in this section. He had many relatives who are prominent in Madison County and belonged to a family of six brothers and six sisters. His father is one of the oldest citizens of this county and neither to him nor to his aged wife has the news of the crime been made known. Berryman was a man of fine physique, and rather good looking. He was thirty-eight years old and had been married twice. His first was Miss Scarborough, quite a good looking young lady, daughter of the former sheriff of Madison County. In 1889 she secured a divorce upon the grounds of cruelty. On the same day the divorce was granted Berryman led to the altar Miss Hall, a daughter of a farmer now located in Lindale, Smith County, Tex. Miss Hall was a young lady of quiet demeanor, and for several years the couple seemed to live happily together. Berryman worked industriously and was regarded as a citizen of good repute. Several years ago he began to drink heavily, and since then has kept up a dissipated career. When under the influence of whisky he seemed crazed and was difficult to control. WANTED TO KILL

Page 22: John Berryman Berriman and His Descendants - GeoCities · 1 John "Berryman" Berriman and His Descendants Generation One 1. John "Berryman" Berriman, born about 1632 in England, died

22

THEM ALL Just one year ago a wife of one of the neighbors dropped in to see Mrs. Berryman. She knocked upon the door several times without getting a response, but finally Berryman came to the door, reeling under the influence of whisky. He carried a shotgun in his hand, and seemed nerved up to a high rage. The woman screamed and started to leave. Berryman called her back and demanded to know her mission. She informed him that she came to call upon his wife. “You can see her," he replied, but you must make it short, for she has only five minutes to live." The woman was horrified. Guarded by Berryman, who held his shotgun to his shoulder, she entered the room and found Mrs. Berryman seated in a large rocking chair in the little of the room, surrounded by her little children. “You see I put them in a circle," muttered Berryman with a drunken oath, "so I can get a good shot at the whole bunch. I'm going to kill 'em out, and I'll make a clean job of it, “What deterred Berryman from his sanguinary purpose then is not known. The women made her escape and informed the neighbors of what had happened. They arrived in time to quiet the drunken rage of the madman and rescue his family. THE MULTI-MURDERER AT CHURCH Just before the tragedy yesterday Berryman was at a service at Mill Shoal church, where he remained for some time. Upon his way home he stopped by a shingle mill, where it is said he loaded up with a bountiful supply of corn whisky. He went from the mill immediately home, and it is supposed that just upon his arrival the crime was committed. What was done before the deed seems to have been a repetition of the scene of last year. Berryman called his wife and children about him. The oldest child was just seven years old and the youngest an infant of seven months, which the mother was nursing at her breast. The gun used was a breech-loader, and only one barrel could be fired. Six shots were fired, and between each he deliberately drew out the cartridge and inserted a new load before blowing out the brains of the next victim. After Berryman had killed his wife and four children, and before he put the load into his own head, it appears that he waited for some time. FORMER WIFE MOURNERA strange incident of the tragedy is the attitude of Berryman's first wife, from whom he was divorced in 1889. (Elizabeth Scarborough) She appears to be chief mourner, and weeps incessantly. As the curious crowd pushed into the house of carnage this afternoon this former wife was seated upon the steps convulsed with grief, and declaring between her sobs that she had always loved Berryman from the morning of her marriage. This former wife refused to be comforted. USED A KNIFE FIRST An examination of the body of his victims showed that the throat of the eldest boy was gashed with the blade of a small knife. It was thought that Berryman began his work of annihilation with a knife first, but finding it too slow, decided to use his gun. THE FUNERAL TODAY the funeral of the Berryman family will occur tomorrow at noon from the house of one of Berryman's brothers. The six coffins containing the mutilated remains have been moved there. Thousands of people will gather tomorrow from every section of the county to witness the funeral services.(Dave Berryman is Charles Taber Berryman, Jr, son of Charles Taber Berryman and Elizabeth Ray).

(daughter of John W Christian and Lucy Ann Moore), died 1964. 62. Jasper Lawyer Berryman, born 14 Jun 1868 in Madison County, Georgia USA,

died 1 Oct 1909 in Madison Springs, Madison, Georgia USA, buried Jones Chapel Meth in Madison County, Georgia USA.

Jasper was a farmer and they lived in Madison Springs, GA where he worked for

the Honeycutt’s. Jasper died of a heart attack 1 Oct 1909 while loading cotton. Cleo was helping her father

when it happened. Gordon Hill was working with Jasper at the time he died - he later married the oldest daughter, Clara Bell. According to daughter Eva, the children went to Bond School while they were living in Madison Springs.

Life was very difficult for Fannie and the children after Jasper died. Fannie took in washing

and made a living the best way she could. For a while the family lived in a little log house behind John A. Berryman's house in the Harrison District. After only a few years they moved back to Madison Springs and the area where Fannie's family lived.

Many people helped her but none more than Uncle Rufus and Aunt Dora Berryman. Aunt Dora made clothes for the children and helped take care of them. The family has also mentioned that the Honeycutt’s were very good to Fannie and the children, too.

Jasper Newton Berryman was born 4 June 1868 in Madison County. He was the son of

Wilson Penn Berryman and Elizabeth Jane Dean. He married 10 Dec 1893 to Alice Melina Frances "Fannie" Guest. Fannie was born in Elbert County on 8 April 1868. She was the daughter of James M. Guest and Mary M. Bond. Jasper was a farmer and they lived in Madison Springs, GA where he worked for the Honeycutt’s. He died 1 Oct 1909. Fannie died on 7 December 1939. They are both buried at the Jones Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery.

He married Alice Melinda Frances "Fannie" Guest, 10 Dec 1893 in Madison

County, Georgia USA, born 8 Apr 1868 in Elbert County, Georgia USA (daughter of James Martin Guest and Mary M. Bond), died 7 Dec 1939 in Madison County, Georgia USA, buried Jones Chapel Meth in Madison County, Georgia USA.

Alice: Fannie died 7 December 1939 in the Bluestone Community of Madison

County, GA, where she was living with her son Taft. Both Fannie and Jasper are buried at

Jones Chapel Cemetery, Madison Co, GA. The tombstone was erected several years after Jasper's death. Hervin, a son, said that the tombstone is wrong and the census records support this. We have given what we believe to be the correct dates here. Jasper was a farmer and they lived in Madison Springs, GA where he worked for the Honeycutt’s.

Jasper and Fannie had 43 grandchildren who with their children are scattered around the

world. Children: 87. i. Dupree Berryman born 4 Dec 1894. 88. ii. Hoyt Newton Berryman, Sr born 19 Dec 1895. 89. iii. Clara Bell Berryman born 31 Mar 1897. 90. iv. Tomb Bought to Prevent Extravagant Funeral THE ATLANTA JOURNAL SUNDAY MORNING, JULY 30, 1922. BY HOMER THOMPSON DEATH may approach some unsuspecting mortals unannounced and lay its icy hand upon

them unprepared, but John A. Berryman, an aged and blind farmer of Madison County, who lives five miles west of Royston, is far more wary. Heeding the Scriptural injunction: "Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour," Mr. Berryman has already

Page 26: John Berryman Berriman and His Descendants - GeoCities · 1 John "Berryman" Berriman and His Descendants Generation One 1. John "Berryman" Berriman, born about 1632 in England, died

26

selected and paid for his own coffin, prepared his own grave, erected his own monument and written his own epitaph. The coffin is being kept in readiness at Elberton and the empty grave is waiting in the Berryman private burial ground two miles west of Royston. All this despite the fact that Mr. Berryman continues in the best of health even at the advanced age of 75 years.

When seen at his country home recently and asked by the writer why he had thought fit to

make such preparations, Mr. Berryman said: "I did it in order to avoid an extravagant funeral, partly on account of my brother's recent death. He was killed in a sawmill accident and unfortunately left no provisions in his will limiting the amount that should be spent on his burial, consequently his monument alone cost $3,000. I have always lived simply and do not want anything wasted on me. The family will need it later on. The coffin, grave and monument together, cost only $600."

When it was pointed out that there might be an additional fee for the services of the

undertaker at his death, he declared: "No undertaker shall bury me. The relatives can do that for nothing." Throughout the interview Mrs. Berryman was present and smiled good-naturedly at her husband's strange philosophy. The grave has the usual depth and is chiseled out of the finest quality of blue granite. A heavy granite slab, 15 inches thick, covers it and serves also as a monument. Upon the slab near the top is the following inscription:

"John A. Berryman

July 11, 1850 July 11, 1925."

The writer expressed surprise that the very day, month and year of death should have been

anticipated, and inquired of Mr. Berryman whether he had had a premonition as to when he would die, "Oh no," he explained, "I did that for two reasons. In the first place I was afraid if I did not put that date on there it never would be done. I always finish a thing before I quit it. I do not know when I shall go but I am ready any time. Then in the second place, my first wife was born in July and died on the same date in July. I was also born in July and hope to die in July." And the second wife glanced at the calendar and smiled good-naturedly again.

Mr. Berryman is a prominent citizen of his county and is held in the very highest esteem by

his neighbors. He owns his home, a farm containing 500 acres, is an advocate of good roads, better schools, and votes for principles rather than parties. He is a member of the Universalist church and a prominent Mason, the emblem of which fraternity is engraved upon his monument. Though frail by nature he has never been sick, but for five years has been almost totally blind. He talks well and takes great interest in discussing current events.

As the writer took his departure the voice of the blind philosopher became husky. He lifted a

hand for attention. "You will notice," he said, "as you go back by the graveyard a low tombstone out in one corner of the place. That is where we buried 'Old Fly,' my mother's old buggy mule. She was foaled in 1868 and died in 1908 and a better mule never lived. My first wife and I drove her to Hiawassee on our Honeymoon 40 years ago." And the old man's tears flowed copiously.

Rarely does one meet a man so unusual. His tender regard for his beast, his brotherly regard for his fellow man, his habit of thrift, his good citizenship and his calm demeanor as he waits unafraid the call of the Grim Reaper, are characteristic of his wholesome life and his quaint character.

Note: Many people tracing there family roots should pay close attention to John A.

Berryman's monument inscription on when he supposedly died. This was written himself before he died and the date that he predicted he would die. The correct date that he died is 27 January 1923 in Madison County, Georgia USA.

The reason that I do know that this is a fact, John A. Berryman is my great grandfather and is

the father of my grandmother Luna Berryman Seigler. All facts of this can be verified in the Berryman family bible and on his death certificate.

MI PARTIAL LIST OF CITIES AND TOWNS 1960 CENSUS * POP ESTIMATED * COUNTY SEATS In 5-E Road 281 - South of Royston Note - Berryman Berryman made the Georgia map because Grandfather (John A. Berryman) would pickup mail in Royston and bring it to his house where the neighbors in the Community would pick up their mail at his house. This was late 1800'sand / or early 1900's. A small black community outsider of Royston is also called Berryman. It was built after the Civil War when the slaves were freed. The Berryman family having many acres and needing much help hired black people. After the Civil War because of strong prejudices the blacks could not safely continue to live in the tenant houses on the Berryman farms. The Berryman Brothers set aside land and helped the blacks build homes and that community also because known as “Berryman”. Many of the black families adopted the Berryman name. Family members have been told that Uncle Scott played baseball with Ty Cobb when they

were young. My mother has told me that her mother's brother agreed with the general public that Ty was so extremely competitive and "out to win" that playing ball with him was not fun. But during Ty Cobb's lifetime he was generous with his hometown-money to build a hospital, imaging center, nursing home, and working on providing a housing complex for low income elderly adults.

Attached within Descendants of John Berriman is about Ty: The Early Years and how he

got started. Sometime later during Uncle Scott's earlier years of life, he moved to Hollywood, Florida

HOW KUDZU CAME TO ROYSTON, GEORGIA This is a story about PINKNEY JACK SEIGLER and how Kudzu came to Royston, written

by his Daughter Nettie Jon Seigler who Narrates story: In the early thirties my father worked for the Soil Conservation. Being a kind man and

forward thinking man he wanted to save the land and help make it as profitable as possible for his community. When the Conservation Office decided that Kudzu vine was the answer to soil erosion in north-western Georgia, my Dad helped his neighbors plant Kudzu.

To my knowledge Dad never realized what an invasive, destructive, and aggravating plant

Kudzu is. Now many people have tried to find a profitable way to use it or a sensible means of killing it.

Several years after Dad's death and my mother was in a retirement center, they wanted to

expand the Center. When the surveyors found the land it was completely covered in Kudzu! They tried everything - poison, digging, cutting! Then! An important announcement! The problem had been solved!

Farmer Smith had staked out six of his biggest goats on the infested land and it was

working!! That problem was solved! Now eighteen years later I hear that some enterprising people have come up with a recipe for delicious Kudzu Jelly - using the fuzzy under leaf.

My Dad would be glad to know that the crazy Kudzu has finally become a useful plant.

George: On Wednesday, July 20, 2011 was our last night in Royston, Ga and mother and

myself had been visiting with our cousins George (Poss) Johnson and wife Carolyn Berryman for the last couple of days and tomorrow we plan to leave to go back home to Boone, NC. During that last night I talked to cousin Poss about varies members of his family to gather family genealogy information before the next day, and talking with him I could tell that he and his wife Carolyn are very proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Since that night I can remember all that I learned and saw with mother and myself of all the

family love, hospitality, other cousins and memories that we all shared. I think my most

favorite placed that we visited was the house great grandfather John A Berryman and his first wife Elizabeth Johnson lived in that he built. What a find, to see a house built over 100 years ago that was once within my grandmother Berryman-Seigler family. But most of all seeing Royston were my mother was born and where she lived as a very small girl.

I hope that I may return to Royston again someday soon, to visit a place that I would like to

call home. A small town with family that is only a hop skip and a jump away from any place that you might live. Ordinary people just like you and me living within their means in everyday life. A place that has been home for many of my Berryman ancestor for several hundred years. - Pinckney Seigler West grandson of Luna Berryman Seigler.

165. Nettie Jon Seigler, born 11 Jul 1930 in Royston, Franklin, Georgia, USA.

Born: 11 Jul 1930 in Royston, Franklin, Georgia, USA daughter of

Pinkney Jack Seigler and Luna Berryman. She attended the First Baptist Church in Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, South Carolina

USA, and Spartanburg Schools, South Carolina USA. Nettie Jon Seigler attended Winthrop College at Rock Hill, South Carolina USA, East Carolina University in Greenville, Pitt, North Carolina USA and Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina and now retired May 1992 as a 3rd Grade elementary school teacher for the Watauga School System in Boone, Watauga County, North Carolina USA. After she retired from teaching she substituted for a while.

She was married 24 years before her divorce in 1977 from her husband Robert Holt West in

Boone, Watauga County, and North Carolina USA. She never re-married. Nettie Jon Seigler after her divorce, she led a quiet and interesting life enjoying her children and grandchildren, going to Auctions and traveled some when she was feeling at her best. But most of all, she loves family, telling stories to her children and grandchildren of her years of life and memories she stores in her mind.

She is loved by many that have known her for many years and her children and

grandchildren as well. She now lives in a place called Appalachian Brian Estate where she has Retired enjoying the years that she has with God our father in heaven, playing bridge with her son who lives just a mile away from her and some neighbors among many other activities that the Appalachian Brian Estate has to offer.

This beautiful lovely lady, kind, caring and a good creative and active individual is my

mother who I love very much and as far back as I can remember she has always been there for her children and grandchildren even if she is unable to, she tries to be there as long as her will allows.

The following writing is from a book called "WRITINGS", 1984 Appalachian Writing

Project that was published with one of my mother’s "WRITINGS" titled "Letters". LETTERS by Jonnie West my mother who is Nettie Jon Seigler. Some parents always seem to know what to say to their children-no matter if the children

have shown poor behavior, done something shocking, or accomplished something that's truly made them proud. Or maybe the children have been extremely perceptive and understanding during a bad time. If you're a parent, you know all those feelings-happy, sad, glad, proud, disgusted, angry, hurt, and bewildered. Well, I know all about those feelings, but I never seem to know what to say. It's like I feel with my heart, but my mouth and brain don't know how to verbalize my feelings, especially those tense times when just the right word needs to be said.

Page 55: John Berryman Berriman and His Descendants - GeoCities · 1 John "Berryman" Berriman and His Descendants Generation One 1. John "Berryman" Berriman, born about 1632 in England, died

55

Yesterday, while trying to bring order to a couple of dresser drawers, I ran across a packet of papers flipped together with a rubber band. They looked vaguely familiar. My first impulse on seeing my own writing was that these were lists of "things to do" or maybe unfinished letters from years back. They almost landed in the trash. My curiosity tweaked gently, so I thought I'd better at least look to see what was there before I threw them away.

They were letters all right-from to my children-written at a time when my heart was

overflowing with feelings which, for a number of very painful reasons, I couldn't verbalize. I've never considered myself a writer, but boy-did the words flow there in those letters.

I still thought I'd throw them out. Nobody needs ever to know my hurts and hopes during

1978, 79, and 80. Who cares? Well I didn't throw them out. I may need them again. As I read, I thought of changes,

growth, and understanding. These things happened, and yet, maybe, if I hadn't read these letters, I wouldn't have felt the changes and growth so strongly. They helped me see the beautiful changes and helped me understand the growth that's been taking place in my children's lives. I felt I had a better understanding of myself and my three children.

Maybe somebody, if the going is rough with any of my children, or their kids are being a

pain-maybe they, as parents, might need the letters. Maybe the letters will help them be more understanding parents. Or maybe they'll find some insight into me, their mother. Or maybe they'll realize my strong love for them goes on, even when I can't verbalize my feelings.

Allen soon married and began a family with three children; Patricia, Michael and Joshua. Allen was a hardworking, dependable and honest father and a great friend to all that knew

him. He provided a loving and supportive home for his family and after his children were raised he opened his home to his mother and father.

father he would devote his life to caring for his mother Charlotte Blackmon ensuring that she was well cared for.
