Step by Step Instructions for Rivoli Trio Christmas Ornament

Techniques: Basic bead weaving knowledge, Peyote stitch, Herringbone stitch

Materials: approx. amount of delica beads for 1 open warped square with bezeled rivoli

6 to 7 grams - Delica 0035 - Silver Galvanized

2 grams - Delica 0042 - Gold Silver Lined

Beading needles-Gold Eye size 11 & 12or Tulip Needles size 11 & 12

Beading Thread – Miyuki B – White or a color of your choice.

Approx. Finished Size: approx. 3 3/4 inches

Tips:

• Thread tension: be careful not to pull the beading thread too tight • Switch to a smaller beading needle when necessary, to avoid breaking beads.

1. Begin by threading a size 11 beading needle with approx. 5 to 6 feet of prepared beading thread. Attach a stop bead to the end of the thread and leave a 12 inch tail thread. You will use it to reinforce the inside row of the open warped square.

2. Pick up 1 +(19 + 2 ) x 3 + 19 + 1 . Sew through the first added + 19 + 1 . Thread exits the 1st of the 2 on this corner. [illus. 2]

3. Pick up 2 . Sew through the 2nd . This is the herringbone corner. Follow the graph in illustration 3 to finish beading this row. Remember to step up at the end of this round. Thread exits between the 2 beads. [illus. 3]

4. Follow the illustrations below (4, 5, 6, 7 and point row) to bead the rest of the rows of the open warped square.

5. Sew through all the beads of the outside row again to reinforce the row. Weave the working thread into the bead work. Trim any excess thread.

6. Add a needle to the tail thread. Sew the tail thread into the bead work. The thread is exiting a bead. Sew through the bead beside it and through the beads to the inside row. Use illustration 9 to add 2 beads to the inside row. Pay attention to the spacing of the beads added. You will attach the egr beads on the bezel to these beads. [illus. 9]

7. Weave the thread into the bead work. Trim any excess thread.

Bezel the 18mm Rivoli: bezel (3) rivolis

1. Thread a size 11 beading needle with a 4 to 5 foot span of prepared beading thread. Pick up 46 beads, 1 + 1 alternately for a total of 46 beads. Slide the beads to the approximate center of the span of thread. Sew through the 1st bead picked up + 15 more beads. Thread exits a bead. [illus. 1]

2. Add a row of with peyote stitch. Remember to step up at the end of the round. There are 3 rows of peyote now. [illus. 2]

3. Add a needle to the other end of the thread (the tail thread). Make sure the thread exits a bead. This is the back of the bezel. The first stitch is peyote. Next, add a bead on top of the bead using square stitch. Thread exits the to peyote another bead. Repeat this process for this row. Remember to step up at the end of the round. Be careful that you do not step up into the bead on top of the bead. [illus. 3, photo 3]

Adding the beads on the outside edge of the bezel is referred to as an elegant guide round (egr).

4. Next row - add beads using peyote stitch. Be careful that you do not stitch into the beads that are added on top of the beads. [illus. 4]

5. Next row - add 1 + 1 bead using peyote stitch. Gently pull the thread while adding these beads to snug them together. [illus. 5]

6. Last row for the back of the bezel. Add beads using peyote stitch. Gently pull the thread while adding these bead to snug them together. Double stitch this round. If you like, you can add another row of beads. [illus. 6, photo 6]

7. The working thread exits an up bead. Use peyote stitch to add beads on this row. Gently pull the thread while adding these beads to snug them together. When you have added about half of the beads, place the rivoli into the bezel. Continue adding beads to the rest of the row. Remember to step up at the end of the round. Double stitch these beads. 8. Weave the tail and working thread into the bead work. Trim any excess thread.

Attach the rivoli to the open warped square: repeat to make 3 units


1. Attach a new 3 to 4 foot span of beading thread to the bead work by weaving into one side of the open warped square. Thread exits an up bead added to the inside row of the open warped square. [illus. 1]

2. Rotate the open warped square so the point beads are positioned north, south, east, west, as in the illustration. When you sew the bezeled rivoli to the open warped square it is important to pay attention to the spacing. The egr beads on the bezel will be zipped to the up bead on inside row of the open warped square. The illustration shows the way I positioned the open warped square and bezeled rivoli to sew them to each other. I refer to the combined rivoli and open warped square as a unit. [illus. 2]

3. Follow the thread path in the illustration to zip 3 beads on the bezel to 2 up beads on the inside row of the open warped square. Sew through the bead work to the next position where the beads need to be zipped. Continue until all 4 positions are zipped. [illus. 3a, 3b and photo 3]

4. Repeat Steps 1 to 3 with the remaining 2 bezeled rivolis and 2 open warped square. I refer to each of these as a unit.

Join the top point beads of the units:

1. Securely add a new 3 to 4 foot piece of thread to 1 unit. Sew through the bead work and have the thread exit the top point bead. [photo 1]

2. Pick up 1 FP. Sew through the point bead on the 2nd unit. Repeat this so there is 1 FP between each point bead. Double stitch all these beads. [photo 2]

3. Pick up 5 beads. Sew through the point bead of the 3rd unit. Repeat to add 5 beads over each FP bead. Thread exits a point bead. [photo 3]

5. Sew through the 3 beads just added and gently pull the thread to snug the beads together. Double stitch these beads. Sew through the bead work on one of the units. Weave the thread into the bead work of this unit. Trim any excess thread. [photo 5]

Join the side point beads of the units:

1. Securely add a new 3 to 4 foot piece of beading thread to the bead work of a unit. Sew through the bead work and have the thread exit the point bead on the side of a unit. [illus. 1]

2. Pick up 1 . Sew through the point bead of the unit beside the one just exited. [illus. 2]

4. Weave the thread into the bead work of the 2nd unit. Thread exits the point bead on the other side of the 2nd unit.

5. Repeat Steps 2 to 4 to join the remaining point beads on the sides of the units. [photo 5]

Add a head pin to top of the ornament:1. Add 1 size 8 seed bead to the head pin. I used a silver lined crystal Czech seed bead. [photo 1]

2. Put the head pin through the hole in the center of the 3 FP beads, at the top of the ornanent. [photo 2]

4. Bend in the head pin to approx. 45 degree angle with needle nose pliers. Make a simple loop with round nose pliers. Trim any excess head pin wire. [photo 4]

Join the bottom point beads of the units:

1. Join the bottom point beads of the 3 units the same way the top points are joined – page 9 & 10.

Add the Swarovski Spike pendant to the bottom of the ornament:

1. Attach a new 2 to 3 foot piece of beading thread to one of the units. Thread exits a silver bead in the center of the bottom of the ornament. [illus. 1]

2. Pick up 15 beads. String the Swarovski Spike pendant onto the strung beads. Sew through the bead opposite the bead exited in Step 1. with a heavy black outline. [illus. 2]

3. Sew through the 15 beads strung + the spike + the 1st bead on the base that you started with. [illus. 3]

4. Double stitch the thread path in Steps 2 and 3 to securely attach the Swarovski spike to the bottom of the ornament.
