Keratosis pilaris is a common, chronic, usually painless skin condition that affects a large portion of children and adults. It is characterized by small, patchy red spots that develop primarily around hair follicles on the upper arms, legs and backside. The bumps may also appear on the cheeks and forehead.
The condition has no cure, but it is considered harmless, with many patients complaining that it is mainly a visual nuisance. It is not contagious or caused by bacteria, fungi or virus.

The exact cause of keratosis pilaris is
largely unknown, but it may be caused in
part by an overproduction of keratin in
the skin, or hyperkeratinization. Keratin
is the key substance that makes up the
majority of the outside layer of skin, as
well as hair and nails. When
hyperkeratinization occurs, an excessive
amount of keratin is generated and hair
follicles becomes clogged with small
particles of dry skin.

Anyone can develop keratosis pilaris at any time. Though it seems to be most common in children, it also affects up to 40% of adults. Females are more susceptible, as are those with a family history of keratosis pilaris. Those patients who struggle with chronic, severely dry skin or eczema may also be more likely to develop the condition. The frequency and appearance of the bumps usually improves with age, though some patience still experience symptoms into their 50s and beyond.

There are a number of tips and treatments that are known to minimize the appearance of the bumps associated with keratosis pilaris. Generally, it is important to keep the area moist, especially during the cold winter months. Lotions that contain gentle exfoliators like glycolic and salicylic acids can also help to dissolve dry, dead skin cells and minimize the appearance of bumps. Avoid using drying soaps and detergents, and never use harsh scrubbing motions while cleansing or exfoliating, as this could exacerbate redness and cause irritation. If you are concerned about the severity of your keratosis pilaris, you can consult with your physician about more potent spa exfoliating treatments such as chemical peels and microdermabrasion.
