Joe Buchwald on Acoustic Guitars
Until electric guitars took the music world by storm in the mid-nineteenth century, the
acoustic guitar was the only type of guitar in existence. In spite of the popularity of electric
guitars, acoustic guitars remain the most popular musical instrument in the world, used to
play nearly any type of music including classical, blues, rock, folk, flamenco, jazz, and
country.
Acoustic guitars are hollow, wooden instruments. Although acoustic guitars
traditionally have six strings, an instrument may have 12 strings. Strings may be nylon, often
used for use by flamenco or classical musicians, or they may be steel, traditionally
used to play country, western, and folk music.
The tone and quality of acoustic guitar sound varies according to the type of wood, qhich is
often spruce, ebony, cherry, mahogany, rosewood, or maple. The tone of a high-quality
acoustic guitar improves as the wood ages. Beginner acoustic guitars are often constructed
of pressed wood, while other lower-priced guitars may be constructed of a combination of
laminates and solid wood.
Joe Buchwald is an avowed music lover who plays acoustic guitar. He enjoys attending live concerts and counts Bon Jovi, Nonpoint, and
Chicago as his favorites thus far. Professionally, Mr. Buchwald is an experienced
