NEZ PERCE TRIBAL HEADQUARTERS The Tribal Headquarters was inspired by the community of Lapwai looking at the interaction between generations of Lapwai natives and the beauty of nature that cradles this valley. The facility, serving as both a community space and tribal administration headquarters, is designed to have connection to the extended offi ces to the east, elder housing to the south, and opens up to the community plaza in the north. The Council Chamber is connected to the south courtyard to have transparency to the community.

NEZ PERCE: LAPWAI SITE PLANNING

This group project, designed in phases, looked at an existing community’s layout and examined nodes of heightened activity in 3 places. We talked with community members about their dreams for the Nez Perce Tribe Headquarters and supplemental buildings to design a 50 year plan for the small town and step-by-step realistic goals for the town’s transformation into a culture-enriched vibrant Headquarters that pays respect to the land and the history of the people while incorporating modern technology in building design and city planning.

ARBORETUM PAVILION

Inspired by the beauty of the University Arboretum, this pavilion offers a ripple effect of seating, creating small and large spaces which facilitate both concerts and individual refl ection. The simple shape of the structure accents the landscape and allows intimate interaction with the life of the pond.

BOISE FIRE STATION 5

The Idaho Concrete Masonry Association presented a project in Boise Idaho to construct a fi re station. The focus of this design is to emphasize the gradation between public and private spaces in a fi rehouse that functions both as a public service and a part-time home for the fi refi ghters. Using a “push-pull” method and color of the CMU, the facade of the structure as well as the space plan, this whole building responds to the concept of gradation. Located across the street from a skate park, the front of the structure uses transparency in the bays to inspire heroism and volunteerism in youth and welcome the public to the safety and strength of this fi rehouse.

SPOKANE FALLS BRIDGE

Placed on the edge of downtown Spokane, this bridge is designed to dance over the falls of the Spokane River, allowing viewers to pause along the way and have a close experience with the most dramatic moments of the falls. This project was based on the models constructed and tested in studio to ensure structural integrity of the bridge with the site.

COURTYARD HOUSING

This urban courtyard housing project in Portland focused on eco-friendly living and cohesion with the front porch style architecture of NW 23rd Street. With attention to rainwater collection in streams throughout the courtyard, these units offer an escape from the busy city and interaction in a dense urban neighborhood. The courtyard offers multiple uses for outdoor interaction and covered areas to enjoy the rain.

Located on a busy corner in Downtown Moscow Idaho, this school looks at new ways to teach children in an unconventional environment. The design of this school focused on an open concept allowing learning to be a fully integrated process, with open fl oor plans and adaptable classrooms for smaller or larger spaces, depending on the needs of the lesson plan. Although on a small and busy site, various spaces are reserved for outdoor learning. The main community classroom has large operable glass panels that open and allow activities to fl ow into the yard.

Located in Moscow Idaho, this multipurpose structure was designed to densify the street edge for a new urban development called Legacy Crossing. This new development bridges the gap between the community of Moscow and the University of Idaho Campus. Offering retail space, residential, and a large parking structure, this building utilizes every square inch of the property, offering green roofs, public spaces, and interactive varying overhangs along the facade, resembling books on a shelf.
