WHAT DO PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD DO?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has published a new report on the habits

of the American population. The Bureau is a section of the United States Department of Labor that researches, gathers, and publishes information on work conditions, prices, unemployment, and the productivity of Americans. The figures gathered by the BLS are often used by newspapers, because they are some of the most important indicators of the American economy. Every year, the BLS publishes reports which reflect people’s lifestyles. Check out how we live today:

dads to spend more time with their daughters. The new ad shows that playing is important to free the imagination, and that fathers contribute plenty to their daughters’ social and emotional development by playing with them. Barbie has been very criticized for selling a doll with an unrealistic body. Its makers want to foster female empowerment.

Fashion Sleepwear

Every year, fashion designers create new styles of clothes, which become trendy and hip. In 2017, designs based on men’s pajamas are back in style. Inspired by the comfort and lightness of silk pajama pants and tops, famous brands took several styles to the runways. Dolce & Gabanna, Stella McCartney, Louis Vuitton, Lanvin, Emilio Pucci, and Salvatore Ferragamo were some of the brands that invested in the idea. Singer Rihanna is one of those who has adopted the trend.

WOMEN’S SOCCER IN THE LIBERTADORES CUP

The Brazilian Football Confedera-tion (CBF) wants the main Brazil-

ian clubs to support women’s soccer. CBF’s new rules say that soccer clubs in Brazil can only participate in the Liberta-dores Cup if they have a women’s team in the national championship. This will start

TECHNOLOGY SPACE TRASH Level

Up until 1956, the Earth’s atmosphere was clean

and only meteors and small space rocks rotated around it. However, since 1957, when Sput-

nik 1, the first artificial satellite by former Soviet Union, was launched, mankind started to dispose of parts in space, thus producing space trash. The rocket that took Sputnik to space marked the beginning of a big accu-mulation of trash. Check out the sta-tus of our planet today. In 2012, more than 500 thousand objects over 1 cm in size had already been identified by the North American Space Surveil-

lance Network. The International Space Station (ISS) has a protection barrier to prevent catastrophic colli-sions such as the one that took place in 2014, when the astronauts had to seek shelter in the Soyuz capsule, because of the high risk of collisions. Scientists and engineers are coming up with solutions to clean up trash such as space fishing nets and laser telescopes.

1. Who is planning to clean up the atmosphere and how do they plan to do this?2. What could be one of the consequences of having trash in space?

QUESTIONS

ROBOTS IN THE CLASSROOM LevelClassrooms are be-coming increasingly

more high-tech. Interactive blackboards, portable com-puters, and online classes are flourishing, but are students learning different things or are they learning the same thing on different devices? In a world where artificial intel-ligence and robots threaten to take away jobs from humans, some kids are already learn-ing new skills from robots. At BETT, the largest education event in the world, which took place in London this year, sev-eral experiences were shared,

such as that of a group of stu-dents from London Design and Engineering who go to school with two human-like robots, the Softbanks. Another group made a trip to a snowy location with 11 NAO robots whom they taught how to ski. The school has a partnership with several industry spon-sors, including University of East London, Thames Water, and Fujitsu, which supply the school with the robots which provide students with new learning experiences. In 2017, over 60 thousand schools in the USA started a new project

to teach coding through drone lessons. The fourth grade stu-dents at Towne Meadow El-ementary School, in Indiana, for example, enjoy testing drone flights in the class-room. In other schools, there

are classes where students use headsets instead of books - en-tering virtual reality to learn about the French Revolution or interacting with a solar system hologram to learn about space. According to Lenovo’s global education specialist, Sam Mor-ris, this way of learning offers major benefits. Some teachers are still hesitant to adopt this

new way of teaching, but fig-ures show that students who attend these classes have good results and learn quickly.
