THE SENTIMENT: OVERALL HIRING SCENARIO

Calendar 2011 is expected to be a landmark year for job creation as all industries are upbeat about their hiring

sentiment. The job speak index for Apr-11 at 1062 as compared to 1085 in Mar-11 shows a minor dip in the hiring

activity owing to the ongoing appraisal season. Hiring activity for the Construction and Engineering sector has been

clocking impressive growth figures for the past few months and has finally reached its peak of 830 in Apr-11. This is

the highest point on the index for the sector since Jul-08. This dovetails with the optimism shown in the Naukri Hiring

Outlook Survey where 77% of recruiters from the Construction and Engineering sector had anticipated new jobs will

be created in the first half of 2011 and 47%.

An in-depth analysis of the indices shows that all the top industry sectors registered minor dips in hiring

owing to the ongoing appraisal season.

In Apr-11 most key functional areas and cities saw a minor lull in their hiring activity. Bengaluru and Chennai

in particular have seen their indices dipping by 15% and 12% respectively in Apr-11 over Mar-11

S ECTORAL ANALYSIS

An in-depth analysis of the indices shows that all the top industry sectors have witnessed minor dips in their

hiring activity. Key industry sectors like Auto, Banking, Oil and Telecom saw their indices dipping by 2%

respectively in Apr-11 over Mar-11 while the BPO sector saw a 16% dip in the hiring activity in Apr-11 when

compared to the last month. The Construction and Engineering sector witnessed maximum movement in the

employment front both monthly as well annually as the index moved up by 9% in Apr-11 over Mar-11 and by

13% in Apr-11 over Apr-10. Both IT and Capital Goods sector maintained steady hiring levels over the

month.

F UNCTIONAL AREA ANALYSIS

The hottest skill sets for the month of Apr-11 were professionals in Production and Project management

where the index moved up by 4% respectively in Apr-11 as compared to Mar-11. The demand for

professionals in HR, Accounts, Sales, and Software Development maintained steady hiring levels in Apr-11

over Mar-11.

C ITY B ASED S CENARIO

Most cities have experienced a lull in hiring activity in Apr-11. Among the metros only Mumbai maintained

steady hiring levels, while Delhi and Hyderabad saw dips of 2% respectively in Apr-11 over Mar-11.

Bengaluru and Chennai saw dips of 15% and 12% respectively in Apr-11 over Mar-11. However the three

month moving average indices for these cities maintained steady hiring levels

.

W ORK -EX BASED S CENARIO

Hiring activity saw a dip across all experience brackets barring 8-12 years and over 16 years experience

levels where the index maintained steady hiring levels. Hiring activity in the 0-3 years and 4-7 years dipped

by 4% and 2% respectively in Apr-11 over Mar-11.

METHODOLOGY

The Naukri Job Speak index from Feb’10 includes both online jobs as wells as jobs acquired from existing clients

by our tele-calling team. Although the tele-calling data is a relatively small component of the entire job postings on

Naukri, addition of the same to the index gives a more holistic picture of the Indian job market. Therefore, the Job

index which was till now based on the July 2008, has been realigned to take care of the effect of the Jobs added

by the tele-sales team.

On the basis of job listings added to the site every month, the data shows an increase or decrease in the index. To

calculate the index, job listings added to the site in July 2008 have been taken as 1000. The subsequent months

have been indexed with data of July 2008. The monthly report shows hiring trends across industry sectors,

geography and functional areas. There might be high volatility for certain fringe cases like smaller cities, niche

industries etc. owing to a small base, but more than 34000 clients using Naukri.com leads to high reliability of the

data.

Naukri Job Speak not only talks about sectors or cities but also about the total job movement on site. The total jobs

on site are defined as:Total Jobs: Jobs Added + Jobs Refreshed

Where a refreshed job is any job that was posted earlier, however has been refreshed during the month and

therefore indicates that the position is still open.
