Get Organized!Have a Job Search binder where you keep track of:

• Web Sites, Username & Passwords Used to apply for jobs

• A calendar keeping track of when you applied for a job and when you need to follow up.

• A complete list of your educational background and work history.

• A complete list of current references

• A current resume

• A list of contact information for anyone that could lead to a job opportunity.

• A scheduled time everyday when you do job searches and follow ups.

Networking: Using contacts to find a

job

Newspaper

• Classified ads are usually found in the back of the newspaper

• They are organized by job categories such as "sales" or "education."

• A lot of abbreviations are used

• A lot of people advertise in the classifieds to buy and sell items, homes, find pets, etc. so you will have to look carefully for the "help wanted section because the print is very small.

Walk into business and ask for an application

• Remember to wear APPROPRIATE clothing

• Dress in business casual style (you might get an interview on the spot!)

Job Fairs:

• Are a great way to network with potential employers.

• Offer information on the latest employment trends.

• Offer information on current job openings.

• Job fliers will let you know when and where the fair will be held in addition to companies that will be there.

Company Web Sites

• If you know of a specific company you would like to work for, you can go directly to their web site.

• You will have look around the page for a link to their job opportunities; sometimes these can be difficult to find.

• You might see a button that says: “Careers, Employment Opportunities, Career Paths, Join the Team or Current Job Openings” Click that link and follow instructions for applying.

• Many are located at the bottom of the page or in the top left or right-hand corner

Using email to apply for a job:

• Use an email address that is professional (such as "[email protected]"; NOT "[email protected]")• Put the position you are applying and your name in the subject line.• Attach a current copy of your resume and cover letter.• Briefly explain the purpose of your email. • Use polite and professional language• Check your grammar and spelling or have someone help you proofread

Beware! Things to look out for online• Don't fall victim to "Phishing Scams"

e-mail you receive offering something and asking for personal information in return; make sure you only reply to e-mails of people or companies you have contacted.

• You should never have to pay a fee to apply for a job

• Avoid Identity Theft Recognize job solicitations that ask for more

personal information than is necessary (You should never have to give your social security number in a job search)

Take care of yourself and stay positive:

• Searching for a job can be frustrating. Make you get support and involve your friends and family in your job search.

• Don't take rejection personally. Focus on what you can control; your attitude, your schedule, being organized, your health and well-being.

• Be flexible. Change your job search tactics if something isn't working.

• Have a positive attitude and be polite to everyone that you meet.

• Never underestimate the power of saying "Thank You!"
