CHALLENGES

Load traversing bridge

No Water Weights: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers requirements dictated that the test be completed with solid certified weights. The use of Water Bag Weights was prohibited.

Dam Gatehouse Size: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers requirements dictated that the crane traverses the runway and hoist traverse the bridge while under the load of the test weights. The overall size limitation of the gatehouse required YorkHoist to engineer and fabricate a custom low headroom load bar to secure the test weights.

Access Bridge Capacity Limits: The access bridge to the Wister Dam Gatehouse has a maximum load capacity of 30,000 lbs. To complete the load test, YorkHoist was required to transport 77,000 lbs of weights across the bridge. YorkHoist used a small truck to individually transport weights ranging between 5,500 lbs and 12,700 lbs across the bridge to the gatehouse.

Gatehouse Floor Capacity Limits: The Wister Dam Gatehouse had a maximum floor capacity of 40,000 lbs. Because of this, YorkHoist could not simply place the entire test load on the floor. YorkHoist engineered and fabricated a load supporting framework which distributed the load across two and the dams load baring concrete columns. This allowed YorkHoist to assemble and disassemble the test load one weight at a time.
