How to Prepare for an Interview
The Day of the Interview
• Carry these items to the interview
– Several copies of your resume
– Copies of your References
– Take a professional portfolio or folder to hold your resume, references and to take notes following the interview
• Be sure to take clear directions in getting to your interview
• Dress appropriately. First impressions matter.
• Arrive 10 to 15 minutes before the interview. Treat the receptionist and other employees of the company with the upmost respect. Greet company employees with a smile, good eye contact and a firm handshake.
• Leave your cell phone or other electronic devices in your car or at home.
During the Interview• Maintain a professional posture and a
positive tone of voice. Show excitement for the position.
• If you are stumped on a question, you can always ask for a moment to think about it or ask to return to the question later.
• Never criticize former employers, bosses or co-workers while discussing previous employment experiences.
• At the end of the interview, collect a business card from each interviewer and thank the interviewer for their time.
After the Interview• Send a ‘Thank You’ letter to the each
interviewer within 1 to 2 days after the interview
– Only 10% of candidates send ‘thank you’ letters, you may have an advantage if you send them
• Take time to evaluate your performance
– What went well in the interview
– What needs improvement
• Work on addressing areas of improvement
Examples of Interview Questions• How would you describe yourself?
• What qualifications do you have for the position?
• How do you work under pressure?
• What do you consider to be your greatest strengths? Weaknesses?
• What specific goals have you established for yourself for the next 10 years?
• How do you determine or evaluate success?
• How do you deal with conflict?
• Tell me about accomplishments in which you take pride. Give examples.
• Why did you seek a position with this company?
• How do you work under pressure?
• What motivates you to put forth your best effort?
• Why should I hire you?
