JOB DESCRIPTION: HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE TEACHER (INCLUDING IB PHYSICS)

CAMPUS Johannesburg Campus DIRECT SUPERVISOR High School Principal START DATE August 2018

POSITION OVERVIEW This Grade 9-12 Science position includes sections of Grades 9 or 10 Science and IB Physics SL and HL. The high school operates on an 8-period rotating block schedule, and teachers are assigned to teach 5 of 8 blocks.

QUALIFICATIONS The science teacher should have:

• Secondary license or certification for teaching science with a preference for a master’s degree • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers and others • Positive attitude • Ability to differentiate instruction for all learners • Experience with PLCs and using data to inform instruction • Proven ability to develop successful academic programs • Flexibility to teach a variety of science classes • Successful experience teaching IB Physics and working in a Diploma Program school

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• Recent and relevant professional development in teaching and learning • Experience developing Science units of study, assessment rubrics, and data analysis • Understanding of inquiry • Understanding of diverse assessment strategies • Experience with moderation of assessments in a collaborative setting • Experience coaching sports and/or supervising student activities

GENERAL TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES Teachers at AISJ are expected to:

• Communicate and liaise on a regular basis with fellow team department/grade members with regards to planning, assessment, parent and community contact, subject organization and classroom issues such including discipline, expectations and routines

• Communicate and liaise with other school colleagues to promote social and emotional growth among students

• Take an active role in behavioral management and pastoral care of class groups • Attend and constructively contribute in staff meetings

• Assist in supervision of student breaks • Coordinate class activities as deemed necessary • Maintain up-to-date records of assessment, attendance, planning, reports, conferences, and

communication with parents • Establish links with the parent community to ensure that parents are kept well informed about student

progress • Act as a resource/contact/support for new staff members (i.e. curriculum, schedules, procedures) • Contribute at least 15 hours beyond the regular contract time to supervise student activities • Participate in and assist with school events as required

School Hours 7:10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and 7:10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday
