<ul><li><p>JOB DESCRIPTION FOR QUANTITATIVE REASONING FELLOWS, 2014-2015 </p><p>Baruch College Quantitative Reasoning Fellows at Baruch College will be housed at the Center for Teaching and Learning, reporting to the director, and they will work on projects to identify and implement best practices to enhance instruction of fundamental mathematics. Their responsibilities and opportunities will include: </p><p> research into emerging trends in mathematical instruction, including course hybridization and the integration into math instruction of open education resources (OER); </p><p> organization of workshops for full and part-time faculty that promote innovative course and assignment design; </p><p> assessments of specific quantitative reasoning learning goals located in different departments; exploration of ways to enhance the integration of numeracy into the curricula of a range of </p><p>departments, including marketing, journalism, history, and the sciences; identification of software and hardware tools that can broaden paths to engagement with </p><p>quantitative methods, and development of procedures to implement and support those tools throughout the curriculum. </p><p> About the Baruch College Center for Teaching and Learning The Center for Teaching and Learning aims to expand faculty development opportunities at Baruch College, particularly in the areas of academic integrity and the development of online and hybrid courses. The founding director, Dr. Luke Waltzer, was appointed in August 2013 to shape the CTLs identity and to build its programming. Baruch College has a rich tradition of faculty development, including programs that have been led by the Bernard L. Schwartz Communication Institute and the Writing Center for the last fifteen years. The CTL will build upon this tradition, experience, and body of knowledge to augment existing structures and build new ones for supporting faculty and students as the College strives to attain the goals articulated in its Strategic Plan. The Center for Teaching and Learning reports to the Office of the Associate Provost, Dennis Slavin, and is supported by an Advisory Board drawn from across the community. The Center for Teaching and Learning also works closely with the Zicklin Online Learning and Evaluation program, which is focusing explicitly on questions around online instruction within the Zicklin School of Business. </p></li><li><p> Borough of Manhattan Community College </p><p> BMCC Quantitative Reasoning Fellows (QRFs) will engage in a variety of activities, among which may be: </p><p> Research QR practices at other schools that have a well-established QR program across the curriculum. Identify desirable practices for use at BMCC and adapt them to the needs of BMCC faculty and students. </p><p> Partner with select faculty members who are or will be going through QR professional development workshops. The first step will be to observe classroom lectures in designated QR courses in order to help identify suitable QR topics and assignments. QRFs will provide a range of support for faculty partners, including but not limited to the following: </p><p>o Serve as a sounding board for the articulation of course goals and for assistance in redesigning QR syllabi. </p><p>o Help faculty to refine previous QR assignments or to design new ones (both formal and informal) to accomplish specific QR learning goals. </p><p>o Help faculty to develop new ways of presenting QR material within a lesson. Such development may include visual aids as well as electronic aids. </p><p>o Help construct explicit criteria for evaluating student QR responses criteria that will be communicated to students as part of the QR assignment. </p><p>o Help to develop useful, efficient ways of responding to student QR work. </p><p> Assist the QR coordinator in creating and implementing faculty development activities to teach faculty ways to infuse QR into course instruction. </p><p> Develop, attend, participate in and help conduct small group, class, or campus workshops on strategies for QR instruction (overcoming QR instructional anxiety, strategies for teaching fundamental QR skills, articulating QR goals, pairing QR with writing, assessing QR, etc.) </p><p> Attend weekly group meetings with the QR coordinator to review progress, share best practices, and set new goals. These meetings will be part professional development (QRFs will read and discuss literature on QR theory) and part work reports and discussion of focus and direction. </p><p> Submit regular workload reports to the QR coordinator. </p></li><li><p>Brooklyn College </p><p>In 2014-15, Brooklyn College proposes to create a culture of quantitative reasoning and assessment across the campus by infusing QR planning and development activities into four targeted areasstudent success initiatives in undergraduate programs, School of Education standards and assessment implementation, development of the Center for the Study of the City, and integration of QR into graduate programs in the schools of Visual, Media, and Performing Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences. The Brooklyn College QR Fellows will be guided by a leadership council consisting of Assistant Provost Colette Wagner, Acting Associate Provost Sharona Levy, Dean Maria Conelli, Dean Kimberley Phillips, and Assistant Dean Geraldine Faria. The QR Fellows will meet regularly with the leadership council and their designated activity coordinators to ensure an integrated, team approach. Specific duties of the four QR Fellows are described below: 1. Supporting Student Success/Integrating QR into Undergraduate Programs </p><p> Providing direct support to students who are having trouble in QR courses, especially in general education courses, through sessions in the Brooklyn College Learning Center; </p><p> Designing and implementing faculty development activities to encourage and support the infusion of QR into course instruction across the disciplines, and designing authentic assessments; </p><p> Working in the new Team-Based Learning project to aid faculty in developing, implementing and assessing relevant QR application activities for in-class use. </p><p>Undergraduate QR Coordinator: Niesha Ziehmke, Director of First College Year Programs/Coordinator of CUE Initiatives. 2. Implementing a Coordinated Standards and Assessment Program in the School of Education </p><p> Participate in QR faculty Development Activities to teach faculty ways to infuse QR into course instruction. </p><p> Assist in the training, implementation, and maintenance of the TK20 data management system. Assist in training faculty and staff on implementing edTPA requirements. Monitor inclusion of Common Core State Standards into the teacher preparation programs </p><p>curricula. Partner with Department Chairs and faculty on developing or revising assessment tools to meet </p><p>Specialized Professional Association (SPA) standards. Support team efforts with individual department point persons to meet NCATE, SPA, and State </p><p>Education Department requirements involving quantitative data analyses. Meet biweekly with QR coordinator to review progress, learn together, and set new goals. </p><p> SOE Quantitative Reasoning Coordinator: Assistant Dean Geraldine Faria, NCATE Coordinator and Coordinator of TK20 Assessment Implementation. </p><p> 3. Developing a Center for the Study of the City </p><p> Work with faculty to design and develop the infusion of QR content into course instruction across the disciplines related to studies of cities; </p><p> Design and develop workshops to help bring QR methods to civic engagement and collaborative student/faculty/community projects </p><p> Work with the Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences and the faculty in the Center to incorporate QR into emerging graduate and undergraduate curricula in the humanities; </p></li><li><p> Work with the Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences and faculty in and associated with the Center to create assessment tools </p><p> HSS Coordinators: Dean Kimberley L. Phillips and Professor Tammy Lewis, Sociology 4. Integrating QR into Graduate Programs in the Schools of Visual, Media and Performing Arts and </p><p>Humanities and Social Sciences </p><p> Work with the Dean of Visual, Media, and Performing Arts and assigned faculty to incorporate QR into emerging graduate curricula in film and music </p><p> Work with the Dean of Visual, Media, and Performing Arts and assigned faculty to incorporate QR into the existing Art History graduate program and the advanced certificate in Museum Education program. </p><p> Work with the Dean of Visual, Media, and Performing Arts and the Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences and assigned faculty to incorporate QR into existing graduate curricula in media and creative arts (e.g., journalism, multimedia). </p><p> Work with the Deans and assigned faculty to create a set of recommendations regarding the role of QR content in graduate programs that will be incorporated into the colleges Graduate Program Review, which will be published and submitted to Middle States as part of the colleges Periodic Review Report due on 6/1/14. </p><p> Collaborate with other BC QR Fellows and Center for Teaching to provide faculty development workshops in support of incorporation of QR into selected graduate programs. </p><p> HSS/VMPA Graduate Coordinators: Dean Kimberley Phillips and Dean Maria Conelli </p></li><li><p>Bronx Community College In 2014 Bronx Community College will engage in several activities to infuse quantitative reasoning across the curriculum in selected disciplines with the support of Quantitative Reasoning Fellows (QRFs). The college will develop and implement a plan to infuse Quantitative Reasoning in the curriculum in the Spring 2014 semester to conduct QR enhanced courses in the Fall 2014 semester. QR fellows will be engaged to assist the coordinator and selected faculty in drafting the plan and coordinating with campus resources such as the Center for Teaching and Learning with Technology (CTLT) and the Assessment Office for the following: </p><p> Work with the QR coordinator to create a faculty development program to promote the infusion of QR activities into courses. </p><p> Develop assessment tools (assignment instruments and rubrics) for QR student learning outcomes in collaboration with the College Assessment Manager. </p><p> Attend weekly group meetings with QR coordinator to review progress, share best practices and set new goals. </p><p> Observing classroom lectures of courses which may be designated for QR instruction. Conduct a professional development program for faculty recruited to embed Quantitative </p><p>Reasoning in their courses. </p><p>In the Fall 2014 semester QR Fellows will engage in the following activities: </p><p> Partner with selected faculty members who are or will be going through QR professional development workshops. The collaboration will include the following: </p><p>o Assistance in redesigning syllabi of selected courses to embed QR student learning objectives. </p><p>o Helping faculty in designing new or redesigning previous QR assignments to accomplish QR student learning outcomes. </p><p>o Helping faculty in developing presentation strategies of QR materials in the classroom. </p><p>o Assisting faculty in developing and implementing assessment of QR student learning outcomes. </p><p>o Helping to guide norming sessions with faculty to asses student work. o Assisting students through tutoring session in the completion of QR assignments. o Develop and deliver small group, class, or campus workshops in strategies for QR </p><p>learning Attend periodic meetings of faculty mentors with new faculty embedding QR in their courses. Attend quarterly meetings of faculty teaching QR courses with the coordinator to assess </p><p>progress of QR instruction and discuss improvements. Submit regular workload reports to the QR coordinator. </p><p>Nikolaos Apostolakis, Chairperson of the Mathematics and Computer Science department will serve as the Quantitative Reasoning coordinator and will supervise the QR Fellows. He will be assisted by Luis Montenegro, Interim Associate Dean of Curriculum and Faculty Development, in the Office of Academic Affairs. </p></li><li><p> City College </p><p> Quantitative Reasoning Fellows will work with faculty towards improving quantitative reasoning components for various undergraduate courses. Activities will vary, but may include: </p><p> Assessing the effectiveness of the quantitative components of a course by providing a detailed analysis of current assignments and instruction methods. Following assessment, recommendations for improving the quantitative component of the course will be made. </p><p> Developing supplemental materials for use by faculty and students. This may involve any of the following: </p><p> Designing lesson plans that will become available to faculty. Designing projects or worksheets that can be used either as assignments or as </p><p>supplemental study materials for students. Incorporating existing resources, such as publicly available databases or </p><p>software, as part of an assignment or lesson. When possible, these materials will be integrated into existing courses. </p><p> Develop methods for assessing a student's quantitative reasoning work and corresponding methods for providing effective feedback. </p><p> Attend regular meetings with faculty and the QRF coordinator. </p></li><li><p>Guttman Community College </p><p>In 2014-2015, the duties of the Quantitative Reasoning Fellows (QRFs) at Guttman Community College will be selected from the following: </p><p> Gather video and other digital resources that would be supportive of quantitative reasoning in first year experience courses. This will include meeting with faculty who have previously taught the quantitative reasoning component of the City Seminar I and II courses and finding out what they used and what they think might be helpful in the future. </p><p> Compile list of sources for quantitative data related to first year experience courses. These </p><p>courses include City Seminar I and II and Ethnographies of Work I and II. </p><p> Develop grading rubrics that could be used for assessing student quantitative reasoning projects. </p><p> Work with select faculty to develop and revise QR assignments and assessment items that </p><p>correspond to the quantitative learning objectives in the first year experience courses. </p><p> Work with select faculty to identify specific quantitative reasoning outcomes that would be appropriate and well integrated into existing first year experience courses or second year courses that are being developed. These outcomes will help support the more general institutional learning outcomes. </p><p> Provide QR assistance to graduate coordinators and peer mentors by designing activities that can be used in the first year studio. </p><p> Assist faculty in providing QR instruction in the classroom as needed (e.g. assistance with </p><p>experiential activities, providing feedback on drafts of student work, etc.). </p><p> Meet with QR faculty to review progress, learn together, and set new goals.
