DEPARTMENT: ICT

JOB TITLE: Key Stage 3 Co-ordinator TLR2c £2,816 THE DEPARTMENT The ICT department is successful and highly motivated. Currently all students take a GCSE in ICT and can opt to take a GCSE in Computer Science. From September 2014 however both courses will be optional. One of the Department’s key aims is to make the subject exciting, challenging, relevant and accessible to all students. The department consists of four members of staff. The departmental structure consists of a Head of Department with responsibility for Key Stage 5, a second in charge responsible for Key Stage 4 and a Key Stage 3 Co-ordinator. Accommodation consists of a suite of five teaching rooms with thirty cabled, networked machines in each. These were replaced in the summer of 2012 and run Windows 7 Professional, Macromedia MX 2004 and Office 2010. Also in each room are black and white and colour lasers, a scanner, an interactive whiteboard (Smartboard) and multi-media facilities including a ceiling-mounted projector. A wireless network is installed throughout the school to supplement the cabled network and this is all supported by a Network Manager and two full-time technicians. The department is supported in its work by a central administrative team. It regularly welcomes students from the local SCITT and GTP schemes for either their ‘A’ or ‘B’ placements. The department makes a significant contribution to whole-school initiatives through participating in teaching and learning forums, putting new ideas into practice and ensuring that students leave school with a high level of ICT skills. Members of the department also provide twilight training sessions as required in the use of various software packages. Clubs and GCSE and A level catch-up sessions are provided after school and revision and taster sessions are provided in the Easter and summer holidays for Year 11 and prospective Year 7 students.

CURRICULUM Key Stage 3 Years 7 to 9 are taught in discrete ICT slots and predominantly in single sex classes which are set by ability. All follow a modular course in line with the National Strategy.

In Year 7 students complete three modules of work following an introduction to the school network and online safety. These are:

Desk Top Publishing which includes creating and embedding a podcast

An introduction to spreadsheets which includes financial modelling and marketing

Sequencing instructions and computer games in Scratch. In Year 8 students again complete three modules. These are:

Web authoring and design

Advanced use of Scratch by applying coding techniques to create interaction and feedback.

Previously in Year 9 students have begun their GCSE course. From September we will be looking to introduce a course which gives students a taster of both ICT and Computer Science thus enabling them to make an informed choice when they choose their GCSE options. Key Stage 4 In September 2013 all students in Years 10 and 11 will follow the compulsory Edexcel GCSE course in ICT. Some students in Year 11 have also opted to take extra modules in order to achieve 2 GCSEs. Year 10 will also be offered the AQA GCSE course in Computer Science as an option.

Key Stage 5 Students follow the OCR ICT course. Again this is an extremely popular option and it is offered at both AS and A2. As part of the course students are required to define and develop ICT systems, the marks for this comprising 40% of the overall total. The BTEC level 3 in ICT is also being offered for the first time starting September 2013.

ATTAINMENT The ICT department is successful. Standards at all Key Stages have been at or above national averages in most years.
