Health Problem: The mentally ills well being

Professional InterestPast researchPersonal emotionEqualityPersonal experienceMistreatmentProfessional skills

----This particular health issue became an interest of mine because of my research experiences of the mentally ill done in other classes. It Infuriates me to know the fact that the mentally ill individuals are not treated equally because they are not seem as normal. For example, the shocking abuse against these patients done by the police on a daily basis. Not let alone Suicides and crimes are commonly committed by them because of the ignorance of this specific group of individuals. I unfortunately have first hand experience on this because my sister suffers from a mental disorder that the lack of appropiate resources have worsen her condition impeding her from functioning normally. ----This will help me in my professional skills because until this point I am interested in working as a social work with mentally ill patients within the community therefore it would only benefit me in the form that I will have plenty of learned information on the subject of the mentally ill and would make me understand more of how to do my job.

2Critical Situation/ ProblemThe never ending cycle

--The problem is the health issue of having the mentally ill patients released from mental institutes in a certain amount of time is not sufficient to acquire enough or adequate treatment to fix their mental disorder --3Rhetorical TimingTake action now

-The rhetorical timing is now, immediate action needs to be taken- It has become the new norm of cutting hospital institution stay for the mentally ill with the revolving problem of the lack of adequate health services- Since the deinstitutionalization movement this has been an ongoing issue until present day, but not many have taken the initiative to find a solution or bring awareness to it4They SayCausesEffects Time permittedAdmissionsPublics safetyMentally ill Treatment

DiscriminationFamily hardshipCost to the communityReduced quality of lifeUnemployment and disabilitySuicideCrimesSubstance Abuse

Causes-Both short-term and long-term causes are similar with this particular problemFocuses on releasing patients to reduce the population size of the mental institutions by shortening stays, and reducing admission as well as readmissionsPublics safety, mentally ill treatment

Effects-The most important effect is that the mentally ill are not receiving the treatment needed because they are released 15 days before they are stabilized causing 10 to 20 percent of these patients to be re admitted within 30 days.-Due to the discrimination of the mentally ill they cannot obtain a job, receive quality health care aside from their mental illness, experience low self esteem and cannot find a life partner or friends-increase in homelessness, crimes, suicides therefore here are more persons with mental illness in jails and prisons than there are in state hospitals -Due to lack of adequate housing in the community the average client changed places of residence at least 14 times. Approximately 50% of people with a diagnosis of severe mental illness are diagonosed with substance abuse because Clients may self medicate because symptoms of the illness are not under control or as a way to deal with their social isolation.42% of clients had attempted suicide.Mentally ill population lost 8.8 more years of potential life than persons in the general population 5Community ConnectionSocietyFamilyEveryone who is affected by it

-Society as a whole needs to definitely hear about my research because they are the ones that have the power to make a change happen through voting, advocating, and funding and also because about 2.8% of the US adult population suffers from severe mental illness.

-I would say also family so the family can have beneficial resources to help in the progress of the mental disorder of the family member, learn how to fight for proper treatment for their loving ones- Basically everyone that in a way is affected through this issue and would benefit from the information provided.
