EVERYBODY IN THIS LIFE IS ENTITLED TO EQUAL RESPECT. EVERYBODY CAN HAVE AUTONOMY. EVERYBODY HAS RIGHTS. EVERYBODY SHOULD GET A FAIR GO.

JOAN KIRNER SOCIAL JUSTICE AWARD 2012.The Joan Kirner Social Justice Award recognises those people who are working to bridge the gap between the “haves” and the “have nots” in a way that ensures that everyone, and every community, has the confidence and power to shape their own future.

Everybody in this life is entitled to equal respect. Everybody can have autonomy. Everybody has rights. Everybody should get a fair go.

In this world, though, there’s often a gap between people’s rights and entitlements and the reality of people’s lives.

Social justice is about closing that gap in ways that are inclusive and empowering.

Such work is relentless; it’s sometimes slow to bear fruit. But when it works, and it often does, it’s life-changing to all those involved.

Through the Joan Kirner Social Justice Award, we want to identify those people who are shaping the social justice agenda, and acknowledge and share their achievements.

JOAN KIRNER SOCIAL JUSTICE AWARD 2012.About the Joan Kirner Social Justice Award

For more than forty years, The Hon Joan Kirner AM has worked to eliminate inequality and empower people to shape their own futures.

The former Premier of Victoria and current Victorian Communities Ambassador is a champion for equity, empowerment and inclusion, particularly in the areas of women’s rights, educational equality, community development and the environment.

This award has been created by the Trawalla Foundation and Our Community to both honour Joan’s work, and to unearth and celebrate some of the perhaps lesser-known but equally committed social justice campaigners who are following in her footsteps (or, indeed, carving out their own paths).

The inaugural award was announced at Communities in Control in May 2011 and launched in March 2012. A new recipient will be selected annually.

What is social justice?

Social justice is about empowering people to exercise their rights to equality, respect and autonomy.

It’s about ensuring people, and communities of people, have the ability to shape their own future, about closing the gaps between the “haves” and the “have nots”, and ensuring that no one is left behind.

All effective social justice activities - local, state, national or global - involve respect, inclusion, and collaboration. They ensure that the process of change is owned by those affected by the change.

Who’s eligible for this award?

The award is open to anyone who is working to build social justice in Australia.

We expect and encourage applications from:

• Individuals(unpaidorpaid;amateurorprofessional)

• Peopleworkingasateam

• Community-centredgroups,suchascommunityresidents’associationsorcommunity committees (whether incorporated or not).

There are no age restrictions or requirements as to focus or scope of work. While the nominee may be a citizen of another country, or working in another country, to win this award their contribution to social justice must be felt in Australia.

People (and teams/groups) can nominate themselves or be nominated by others. Note, though, that we do not accept anonymous nominations for this award.
