Happy New Year! Although the next few months are cold and likely dreary, we have plenty to be thankful for and much to look forward to…

Many thanks to Sheila Corbishley for coordinating our Annual Pie Making Event! It was a great success (see side article).

The last issue of the NOTES had an article about nomination submissions for the Mary Harriman Award. To date, I have not received any nominations; therefore, I encourage you to talk amongst yourselves and submit a few names to be considered. You all know how meaningful this award is, so let’s be sure to give it our sincere attention now to ensure a successful outcome. I will be forming a committee in January to help with the process. Please email me your thoughts.

The Mary Harriman Award nomination application is available on the JLS Facebook page and emailed out in a blast.

In the past we have held Sustainer Sectionals in February. If there is interest, we could do this again. Please let me know if you would like to host and/or have an idea for a Sectional.

It’s also time to begin thinking about our Spring Cocktail Party! Would you consider hosting this fun event at your home? Are you interested in serving on a cocktail party committee to help out the hostess? I would love to hear from you!

Nicole Hoy and Kerry Buske Dominski traveled to the NYSPAC Fall conference in Albany, New York. The energetic conference delegates discussed several interesting topics and engaged in a spirited conversation in regards to each topic.

The voting delegates selected continued support of the Trafficking Victim’s Protection and Justice Act (TVPJA) as our primary issue for support and advocacy in the 2014-2015 year. Support for paid family leave was selected as the secondary issue.

So where does TVPJA stand now? As many of you already know, last year,

the bill passed as a stand-alone bill in the Senate and as part of the Women’s Equality Act omnibus bill in the Assembly. Given the recent mid-term election results – with the Republican Party taking back control of the NYS Senate, it’s unlikely that the omnibus WEA bill will pass in the Senate. The NYS Assembly, which will remain Democrat-controlled, has expressed hesitation in regards to passing the WEA as individual bills.

We need the TVPJA to pass as a ‘same as’ in both houses to be signed into law!

information.

JLS members have voted in three new Nominating Advisors who will serve for two League years 2015 – 2016 and 2016 – 2017. Congratulations to Liz Lane, Audra Mueller and Kate Zwecker! These ladies will begin their term as Nominating Advisor in July 2015, replacing three advisors who will roll off the five-person committee next July.

Happy New Year Active Members! Phase II Paperwork will be sent out next month (March 2015), so it’s time to start thinking about your JLS Committee interest for 2015 – 2016. One of the requirements to be considered “in good standing” is that all Active members are to actively participate in at least one JLS Committee or a Board/Chair position. The Phase II provides each Active member with the opportunity to identify her top three choices for Committee placement and to inform Placement of interest in leadership or status change (e.g., going Associate or Sustainer) for the next League year.

So for all those asking, “How can I prepare to respond to Phase II?” here’s the scoop – there are several resources available to help support your decisions for next year.

First, take a look at the JLS Policies and Bylaws. These documents outline the details associated with each Committee and leadership position. You might also consider reaching out to the current Chair of each Committee. Committee Chairs are the best resource for insight into Committee activities, expectations, and accountabilities of each member (e.g., frequency of meetings, key events, opportunities for leadership, etc.).

Your Nominating Advisor is also a great resource of information as you plan out your upcoming League year. Nominating Advisors are assigned for the purpose of guiding you through your League journey, and this is the best time of year to set up a meeting – be it a phone call, a coffee date, or a quick meet-up after a GMM – to discuss your interests and opportunities within the League.

Be on the lookout for your Phase II paperwork in early March 2015. Much like

It was a very close contest and the Nominating Committee wishes to recognize the two other nominees Kerry Buske Dominiski and Christie Novak who were also on the ballot.

Many thanks, also, to all the active members who cast their votes by attending the December GMM or sending in their vote via proxy.

Phase I, we will distribute this paperwork electronically. Please take some time in March to complete the paperwork and return it to me by the March 31 deadline. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or your Nominating Advisor.

The Community Council continues its fight against Human Trafficking in Central New York! The Council has been planning an activity for January, which is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Please watch for more details in upcoming email blasts.

In addition, the Community Council is ex-cited to announce that Theresa Flores, human trafficking survivor, victims’ advocate, and Wall Street Journal and USA Today best selling author of the book, The Slave Across the Street, will travel to Syracuse to speak at our GMM on Tuesday, March 10 and at a fundraising breakfast on Wednesday, March 11. The sec-ond part of the presentation at the GMM will be a training on S.O.A.P.S. distribution, which will follow on Saturday, March 14. We are thrilled to have secured this opportunity for our League and are grateful to be receiving this support from Theresa and her affiliated not-for-profit organization, BE FREE Dayton.

The Community Collaborations Committee planned and executred several volunteer activi-ties this holiday season. Back in October, the committee organized a successful Recreation Drive for the Southwest Community Center. In December, 15 volunteers helped to host the Dorothy Day House Holiday Brunch by pre-paring and serving food, decorating, playing bingo, and distributing prizes and gift bags do-nated by the League. In addition, 15 volunteers wrapped bags of gifts for families supprted by McMahon-Ryan.

The Public Policy committee represented our League at the NYSPAC conference in Alba-ny in November. At the conference, NYSPAC voted to continue supporting the Trafficking Victims Protection and Justice Act and also ad-opted Paid Family Leave as a secondary issue.

AJLI’s Issue Based Community Impact transformation initiative continues to progress. As communicated previously, the initiative is a great learning opportunity on building strategic community impact and membership capabilities. JLS needs to grow this team, so if you are interested in attending training webinars (from your computer!) and helping to advocate our Human Trafficking issue, please contact Megan Husted or Heather Wallace.

The Community content has been up-dated on the JLS web-site prototype. We are excited to share our Human Trafficking message to all visi-tors to the site once it is launched.

8 ASPECTS OF A MOTION!When making a motion, or putting an issue to vote, you want to

make sure you can answer all of the following questions to ensure it follows proper parliamentarian procedure. Each motion has eight dif-ferent components or phases to remember.

Here is a quick guide of questions to remember. 1. May the motion apply to other motions? No. Motions can only be

concerning one issue at a time.2. May the mover of this motion interrupt another member who is

speaking? Never. You must first be addressed by the Chair [Presi-dent] before making a motion.

3. Must a member be recognized by the Chair [President] before she can make this motion? Yes.

4. Must this motion be seconded before it is officially before the as-sembly [membership]? Yes. A second is always required for a vote.

5. Is this motion debatable? Always. The issue must be discussed by the voting membership, prior to the vote to make sure all opinions are heard.

6. What vote is required for its adoption? Majority vote (51%) or a quorum of the membership.

7. May this motion be renewed after it was been voted down? No, not the same mo-tion. However, a new motion can be made.

8. What other motions may apply to this motion? All.
