The Junior League of Lufkin welcomes all women who are committed to volunteerism. The League educates and challenges its members to be effective community leaders, advocates, and individuals. Trained volunteers and collaborators will address and respond to community needs with positive solutions. The League focus is to educate and empower individuals, primarily children, by providing the resources and tools that will address all aspects of their well being.

Leadership Lines
Happy summer to you! I want to thank you for allowing me to serve as President of the Junior League of
Lufkin this year. It is indeed an honor and privilege to work with a group of women who have incredible talents and gifts that they are willing to share with each other and the community. I have been a proud member of this organization since my second year in
Lufkin and look forward to many more years of service to come. Thank you for sending me and Jennifer Webster to Orlando for the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) Annual Conference in April. We were totally inspired by the entire weekend – and we were shocked at how busy they kept us the entire time! AJLI planned activities starting with a 6:30 a.m. exercise class (we passed on that – our apologies!) and kept individual classes, group sessions, and meeting with Leagues our size going into the night the entire time we were there. By the time the closing awards dinner rolled around on Saturday night, we had made friendships with Leagues throughout Texas and the nation, and had even talked with some of our League sisters in Mexico and England. My only regret is that we cannot send each and every one of our members to Annual Conference. It is truly revitalizing and invigorating to realize the role our Lufkin League plays on the international scene and the resources available to us ALL as a part of this organization. I do hope you’ll become familiar with all that www.ajli.org has to offer in the members only section – there are a lot of fantastic resources literally at our fingertips! One standout moment for me during conference was a Saturday morning session with the incoming President of AJLI, Delly Beekman, who hails from New Jersey and has been an active League member for 33 years. No – that is not a typo – an ACTIVE member for 33 years. When asked why she hasn’t gone Sustainer yet, she said, (and I’m paraphrasing, as I didn’t write every word) “I found myself still believing in the work of the active Junior League members. I am interested in where we have been and the new directions we are heading, and felt a desire to stay involved with an organization that was still helping me grow personally. I’m still not quite ready to ‘get out’ of serving our League and our community.” Your board has been hard at work since our planning retreat
on April 30. The Board this year is a great mix of women with differing years of experience, areas of expertise, and opinions, which is a true blessing. What we want for you to know is that we are grateful to each and every member for your contributions and willingness to be a part of this organization that serves the women and children of Angelina County. Every single member plays a vital role in the health of our organization and we are so thankful for what you bring to the table! Before our first meeting in September, Camp Get Fit will have come and gone, school supplies and backpacks will have been distributed to all public primary through high school campuses in Angelina County, the League office will have been cleaned and inventoried, the Board will have had another retreat, our newest Provisional class will be formed, and this year’s Vision Screeners will have been trained. Who says the League takes the summer off? If you are in town and willing to help with Camp Get Fit during mornings the week of August 2-6, I know Heather Robertson and her committee can use you in some way. If you have not already contributed to the Backpack Drive, please contact Anita Boyd with your donation. Also, if you do not work full time (or if you do work full time and have flexibility in your schedule) and would be able to help with Vision Screening on an as needed basis, we would love for you to come to the Museum of East Texas on Thursday, August 26 from 10 to 2 to get trained. Lunch will be provided. Vision Screening is our oldest and longest standing placement and we serve thousands and thousands of children with this placement every year. The committee is in need of more “hands on deck” and will be happy for any time you (whether you are an Active or a Sustainer) can give during the fall. I look forward to a great year with all of you and am excited about all the possibilities the League has for growth and continuing to make a positive difference in our community. We have a rich and strong history of service behind us, support from those who have come before us, and a bright future down the road. The 2010 Career Conference was held on Friday, May 21st, at Lufkin Middle School. Approximately 600 8th grade students attended the Career Conference. The one-day conference included a
motivational speaker, a team building activity, 26 career-choice speakers, and the College Road Trip activity which required 40-80 volunteers to assist.
College Road Trip is designed to help students understand the value of a dollar and the relationship between educational levels and earning potential. The success of the conference was due to the large number of Junior League members and community volunteers that spent the day at Lufkin Middle School. I was impressed with how the members of the Junior League
came together to make sure that this event was a huge success again this year. Chad Morgan State Farm Insurance catered the lunch from Popeye’s Chicken for all volunteers.
A big thank you goes out to Chad Morgan State Farm Insurance.

Registration is now open for the 2010 Camp Get Fit and Kids in the Kitchen for students entering 3rd
through 5th grade. The dates are August 2nd - 6th from 9 am to 12 pm at The First United
Methodist Church Christian Life Center. Cost of registration is $10. This program
was developed to teach youngsters about health, nutrition and fitness. The children learned the importance of choosing a healthy lifestyle by staying active and making healthier food choices. Activities include cooking, physical activity games, and fun,
interactive education about health and nutrition. Pre-registration deadline is Friday, July 16th. Those who pre-register will receive a t-shirt. We will accept registration the morning of camp but t-shirts will not be available to those who do not pre-register. Mail forms to Heather Robertson: 911 Dogwood Ridge, Diboll 75941. The Extra Mile / Thank You
The Extra Mile
Let’s be honest…most of us have a countdown to when we get to go sustainer. But what
would our league look like if we all got to that point, and thought, “Wait, I still enjoy the League and believe in what we are doing. I think I’ll stay!”
This month in the Extra Mile, we celebrate 7 women who, between
them, have almost 50 YEARS of active League experience. Each is eligible to go sustainer, but has chosen to remain an active member of the League. We all know Susan Childers, Misty Croley, Jean Hester, Suzy Jungmann, Donna Ross, Reba Squyres, and Kathi White. We know them because they have been pillars in our League and have been a part of just about every one of our community fundraisers. These women are a true example of stewardship to not only the League, but to the entire community. In this group of women, we have past chairs of Charity Ball, Spring Market, Art Camp, members of Career Conference, Family Night, Xchange Place, HOSTS, and even Zoo Safari (Misty will have to fill us all in on this one!). These women aren’t taking their extra active years lightly, either. This year alone, this group of women will take on Treasurer, Provisional Trainer, Spring Market Hospitality Chair, and Style Show/Entertainment Chair--just to name a few of their placements. What an example and what a wealth of knowledge! We are blessed to have these women as actives for another year and hope for many more to come!

2. I am an Accountant (CPA) and VP/Mortgage Loan Officer with First Bank and Trust. I can help JLL members with banking/financial matters.
3. I am an Associate Attorney with Haglund Law Firm, P.C. I can offer legal expertise to a JLL member.

11. I teach 7th grade math and Lufkin Middle School. I can offer math tutoring services to JLL members.
12. I work for a consulting firm that specializes in Total Resource Campaigns (volunteer-driven sponsorship drives) for Chambers of Commerce all over the country.
13. I am the Development Director/Case Supervisor for CASA of the Pines.
14. I am an architect with a locally owned firm. I can help JLL members with architectural and interior design services for residential, office, medical and religious buildings.

A Word of Advice
As the Senior Health Inspector at the Angelina County & Cities Health District, I monitor an array of
situations in which the environment may be adversely affected, or consumers may encounter public health risks. At Angelina County & Cities Health District we offer
environmental health protection by licensing on-site sewage facilities and investigating complaints regarding unlicensed or malfunctioning systems, which lead to pollution and risk of disease. We also offer consumer health protection by licensing food service establishments such as restaurants, grocery stores, and even snow cone units. Inspectors conduct classes to educate the food managers and food handlers who work within Angelina County food establishments. Buildings we inspect include hotels, daycares, preschools, group homes, foster care homes, public and private schools, public pools and spas, and health clubs. We also activate as members of a disaster team during emergencies, having been directly involved in sheltering, evacuation, and medical service for hurricane evacuees. One thing I can always count on is that every day will bring unique challenges. Environmental & Consumer Health Protection is when
people talk about protecting the environment, they may not realize that such protection is an integral part of public health. Food Service Protection is inspection and licensing of all retail food service establishments in the county. Food establishment managers and employees are required to attend food safety courses taught by Health District staff. Consumer Health Protection ensures compliance with local and state laws regarding motels, child care facilities, public and private schools, health clubs, and public swimming pools. In addition, the staff investigates complaints dealing with health and sanitation problems in the country. Private on-Site Sewage Facility Licensing has been a responsibility of the Health District since 1973. This set of rules adopted under the authority of the Texas Water Code insures proper on-site waste water systems are installed to protect against pollution and disease in areas not connected to organized sewer systems. Vector Control assists when possible in the prevention of disease-carrying pests, including rodents, insects, bats and other vectors.

I hope that everyone is enjoying their summer!! We are very excited to present the first ever summer issue
of Our View. As of June 1, 2010, Jeff Griggs from Miraculous Solutions is
our web designer. He has been working diligently over the summer to rebuild our website and provide a new look. We hope that you will start seeing changes to the website as early as the end of July. Our goal is to have all modifications completed by September 1, 2010. Throughout the year, we are going to implement new features to the website. One feature in particular will be the Message Board. The Message Board will allow members to post comments, topics, and allow moderators to review and edit content as necessary. Sharon Kruk will be our Internal Public Relations for the upcoming year. Mucho Gusto Casserole Ingredients: 1 1/2 pounds of ground meat 1 chopped onion flour tortillas 1 can Ranch Style Beans 1/2 pound Colby/Monterey Jack Cheese 1 can Cream of Mushroom Soup 1 can Diced Rotel Tomatoes (with chilis)1. Brown meat in skillet with onions and drain and drain off grease2. Grease pan with oil or spray with Pam3. Line pan with flour tortilla layer4. Put on top of tortillas in layers: a. meat and onions b. beans - drain off first c. 1/2 pound cheese d. a layer of flour tortillas5. Mix Cream of Mushroom soup and Rotel tomatoes.6. Pour on top of layers7. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes8. Take out of oven and cover with cheese and onions
Pineapple Cheese Ball Ingredients: 2 packages of 8 ounce cream of cheese 1 small can of crushed pineapple (drained) 1/4 cup of minced bell pepper 1/2 tablespoon of Lawry Seasoning Salt 2 tablespoons of minced onion 1 cup of chopped pecansMix all ingredients except for pecans. Form a round ball. Roll the cheese ball into the pecans. Place cheese ball in refrigerator to chill and harden.

Late in the afternoon, as I read my friend, Rachel Colthrap’s, blog and I thought how appropriate her words were for
me. There have been days that I have sat and complained, asking God “why me”, but then I realize that through all my troubles and trials, He holds my hand and has always guided me safely through each trial. I have learned to be
content with my circumstances … anyway. To read about a person who faces tragic circumstances, who lives through unimaginable pain and suffering and who chooses to live a life of dignity with honor is inspiring, but to know one though… that is another thing entirely. To read their story of courage is to wonder at it. To see it lived before you, humbles you to your very soul. An hour in their presence burns into your brain the sermon of a thousand Sundays. Recently, I spent the day with one of these people. Polio has stripped her of her ability to care for herself. It has stolen her ability to do the things she loves, to create the masterpieces she has produced her whole life long. For she is an artist. Using color, texture, shape and textile she has created garments only seen to a poor country girl like me in photographs of galas, inaugurations. But those hands are stilled now and stripped of their artistry. I hear her speak of how painful it is to see the tools of her art, the treasures she has collected, used and loved now being passed on to people to whom they are meaningless. As her caregiver bags them up and donates them to charity, she knows she is saying goodbye to more than metal, glass and plastic. She is saying goodbye to life. The life she had. The life she loved. Stripped of the useful and valuable things of life, she is left with the priceless ones. And they aren’t things. The faithful husband of over 50 years, who daily cares for her every need. Every need. The food, the personal hygiene, the mental and emotional companionship and the spiritual encouragement. All given by him, to her, willingly. Such love, such devotion. It is the stuff that fairy tales forget to write of. It is the stuff seldom sung about, seldom glorified in media, seldom splashed on the big screen. Because it is so seldom seen. And like the rarest of rare treasures, it is priceless. A man who chooses to love her through better, and now worse. In health and now in sickness. A man who chooses to keep his vows... anyway. She is left with the memories of a life lived with honor, with dignity. A woman faithful to her house of worship, when navigating the car, the doorways, ramps, stairs and narrow aisles in her wheelchair made it difficult. But she built a monument to faithfulness…anyway. She is left with the memories of the choices she made to not be bitter, although afflicted with polio just before the vaccine came out, such bitter timing. Yet she built a life of influence and productivity and happiness. From her
chair. In her pain. With her limitations. Anyway. I am humbled, returning to my busy, rushed, sometimes chaotic life. Humbled to be reminded that this too shall pass. The things that seem so important, so RIGHT NOW, are in fact only right now. One day, I too will lay down the things in my life. And as I say goodbye to the stuff that I let define me, as I am stripped of the tools that I have used, the computer, the camera, the sewing machine, the oven, I will see what I really am. Me. Minus the stuff. Stripped to the bones, the support, of my life.I am left to ponder…when I stand there, naked to my soul, what will my soul look like? What will the choices I am making be revealed then as? Wood, hay, stubble? Will there be anything of real substance left? Will I have let the bitter wrongs done me by life, by others, define me? Or did I build a life of dignity, honor, meaning… anyway. Where are you today? What circumstance has unfairly limited you? Lets face it, we do not all have the same IQ levels. We do not all have the same physical abilities. We do not all have the same giftedness. We are, all of us, limited in some way. What choices are YOU making? Do you blame life, God, others? Or do you face life with determination and build a moment to faithfulness, honor and dignity ANYWAY. Yes, life is not fair. Bad stuff happens. Tragedy strikes. But press on anyway. Live a life worth living, worth knowing, worth sharing. Leave behind that most precious legacy of all, an example worth following. From your wheelchair, from your divorce, from your unmet expectation, from your disappointment, from your pain. Glorify God in your moral body… anyway. The Provisional Class would like to say a “Big Thanks” to the League and Sustainers for supporting our efforts in raising money for backpacks.
To date we have collected $1010. Even though this may sound like a good start…that is really all it is. We are definitely short of our goal. Actually, this will buy less than 100 good quality backpacks for the students of Angelina County. We are asking that if you have not contributed and feel led to do so, please send monetary contributions to Anita Boyd. If you would like to donate a backpack it can be given to any provisional member. Do you know a business or individual who might want to partner with JLL as a “Backpack Sponsor”? If so, you can extend an invitation to your contacts to participate. I had a great group of girls to work with.Advice for new members in the League: Along with giving your time and your talents to better your community, always remember to cherish the friendships that you will make in the League.Where will you continue to volunteer? First and foremost I will continue to support the school my daughter attends. I am also on the board at the Museum of East Texas and will continue volunteer as needed.

Sustainer News / A Walk Down Memory Lane
Sustainers have been very busy with graduations, weddings and much anticipated grandbabies. May 15th was a very eventful day as Kittie and Mike Davis’s son Jamie and Rebecca Osborn married at the home of Larry and Shannon Davis with a fun and beautiful reception afterwards at The Lodge. Also on the same day, Ann and Jim Caskey’s daughter, Angela, married Brian Hafernick at the First Christian Church, with a wonderful reception at Crown Colony Country Club. Angela returned from her honeymoon in time to graduate from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston School of Medicine. Callie and Randy Winston’s son Randolph married Chrysti Dennison in Portland, Oregon on June 12th in a beautiful ceremony. Making the trip from Lufkin were Debra and Steve Moore, Kathy Sample, Mary Jane and Jim West and LeeAnn Brookshire. Everyone had a wonderful time at the wedding and even found time to tour the Oregon wine country and see the Columbia River Gorge waterfalls. Lots of Lufkin folks will be traveling to Denver, Colorado for the wedding of Amy Poland and Roy Preyer on June 26th. That is sure to be a beautiful wedding and fun reception at Coors Field. Amy is the daughter of Linda and Robert Poland. I can’t wait to hear all about it. Callie Winston is hosting her bridge group in her Ruidosa, New Mexico home in July for some R and R. I know that will be a fun-filled trip. Liz Jeffrey, husband Ken and daughters, Leigh Martin Tyler and Michelle Martin traveled to the Bahamas, staying at the RIU Resort on Paradise Island. They had a great time celebrating Michelle’s 25th birthday and spending time together. Michelle lives in Ft. Worth and Leigh in Lufkin. Lynell Stover is excited and proud of son Andy Arnold who graduated last month from LSU with his MBA. Andy was one of 6 Flores Scholars with a perfect 4.0 average. Way to go Andy! Terri and Rocky Thigpen are busy with graduations also. Son Austin Thigpen graduated from Texas A&M on May 14 and is working in Waco. Son Blake Williams will graduate this summer from TCU and will begin Optometry School in San Antonio in the fall. Liz and Richard Byler’s son John Byler graduated from Texas A&M on May 14th with a degree in architecture. He will be working in Boulder, Colorado before working on his MBA. Hudson Henderson, son of Brigettee and Trey, graduated on May 14th from where else Texas A&M, with a degree in architecture also. He will attend Clemson University in South Carolina, in the fall, to complete his master’s degree. Kimberly Doyle, daughter of Kelley Moore graduated from SFA with her master’s degree in education. Her emphasis is special education. She teaches at Anderson Elementary. Congratulations to all of these graduates! Vickie Evans is very excited about the much anticipated arrival of her first grandchild, due on Vickie’s birthday, July 14th. “Aunt” Hayley is coming home July 4 from London for the birth of her nephew. Hilary has instructions NOT to give birth until Hayley arrives. Len Medford traveled to Fort Worth and went to the doctor with daughter Amanda to see an ultrasound of her grandbaby, a little girl,
who is due in October. Len is having fun decorating a guest room in pink for the baby. Meggan Jones Thompson, daughter of Jonna Jones, is pregnant and due Sept. 24th. Jonna can’t wait to be a grandmother. Meggan and husband Chris have bought a house in Huntsville and are getting settled. Congratulations to all of the new parents and grandparents! The LHS Alumni Association’s Junior League Sustainer Scholarship Recipient for 2010 is Mylle Lewis. Melissa Abeldt presented the scholarship at the LHS Awards Assembly. Will Griffin, son of Lisa and Fred Griffin, will be in the Honor Guard at LHS next fall. His dad, Fred, was an Honor Guard member the first year they began. Congrats! We need your help!
