3. Zhujiajiao Watertown, shanghai, china

Arup was commissioned by SIIC to prepare a development strategy for a 330 ha site in Zhujiajiao to provide 5665 homes to accommodate up to 17,500 people.

Within easy reach of Shanghai and its suburbs, the site sits adjacent to Dianshan lake, the largest fresh water lake within Shanghai. With more than 20% of the site being water, its stunning waterscape and links with China’s past will ensure Zhujiajiao Leisure Water Town as an unique place for people to live, work and play.

The design of the masterplan was inspired by traditional Chinese water towns, giving a unique lightness and spacious quality to the city. The development will provide a high quality modern residential area leading to a desirable resort destination situated next to the Dianshan Lake. It will also provide job opportunities at all levels in a range of clean industries including a culinary school, Industrial design school, retirement community and resort.

Zhujiajiao leisure water town will thrive on its own terms, and will be a popular destination in its own right.

4 La spezia Water Front, Italy

Role and contribution

Lead conceptual designer, working with Italian architecturefirm. Hands on design, process and production.

Runner-up of international competition.

La Spezia is a city in the process of reinventing itself as a major Mediterranean destination. Its central location in Northern Italy and Europe, year-round good weather, historical town centre, and good local services give it exceptional potential to grow beyond its original function as a port, and attract new business, jobs, people and tourism. The proposal for LaSpeziaaimstogrowthecity’sscaleofinfluenceand allow it to develop into a vibrant and successful waterfront city.

The strategies for La Spezia to achieve its objectives focused on ways of improving existing infrastructure, targeting a wider group of users, and harnessing the potential for leisure and tourism uses. Key principles include:

growing into a knowledge-based economy with an •emphasis on innovative sustainable technologiesrecognising the harbour as an asset, not a barrier, •and promoting connectivity with Nervi, Porto Venere, and Cinque Terre with a solar powered public transport networkidentifying underutilised harbour sites that can be •redeveloped into mixed use, compact, and high quality placesgenerating a wide range of tourism and leisure •activities for residents as well as visitorsdemonstrating clean technologies for regeneration •which in itself could showcase the city’s new identity

AsoneofthefirstprivateuniversitiesinChina, theuniversity seeks to combine the traditional values ofChineseeducationwiththoseoffirstclassinternational standards.

It endeavours to create a centre for stimulated social exchange and sharing of ideas within a contemporary academic village.

The value assigned to the forested and steep topographic nature of the site has meant it necessary to minimise building footprints and circulation routes; maximisingbuildingefficiencywhilstavoidingcuttinginto the natural contours of the landscape.

An estimated 70% of the natural landscape has remained untouched, creating a legacy of parkland; a unique resource for the well-being of its inhabitants. A network of sensitive routes allows cycling and walking deep into the hilly landscape where follies provide places for study, meeting and contemplation. Equally studentsmaychoosetoreflectuponthelandscapefrom within the more formal arrangements of the courtyards.

The integration of buildings within the unique landscape respects the harmonious relationship between man and nature providing visually rich setting for learning and inspiration.

‘Time and Tide’ Plantation Lane

A large glass screen, forty one meters long and 6m high, was devised as a public art project to complement the construction of Plantation Place, two new office buildings designed by Arup Associates. The screen flanks one side of a new central London alleyway that links Wren’s St Margaret Pattens Church with Mincing Lane. The new pedestrian route, which cuts through the city block in the manner of the many alleyways that criss-crossed the medieval City, sits between the two buildings. The artwork was conceived to suggest constancy during times of change.

Patterson, short-listed for the Turner Prize in 1996, has also devised a collection of texts that have been inset into the stone of the new pavement. The text sits along a series of great arcs, which appear to slide underneath the mass of the new buildings. Each curve of text represents a different timeline, beginning with Roman gods and goddesses, and moving

through miscellaneous information such as the City Guilds, the Livery Companies and the different membership degrees of the Freemasons.

Patterson settled on an image of the Moon as a counterpoint to the difficult, rapid and often violent historical changes that have imposed themselves upon the people of London across the ages. Moreover, Londinium’s Roman inhabitants used the cycles of the Moon to underpin their calendar, while today the Moon is considered a symbol of scientific progress.

“The image of the moon is particularly rich in associations, within the field of pagan and sacred symbolism, as ubiquitous symbol in legends and myths, as locus for romantic yearning, but also as incarnation of scientific progress in the 20th century. Patterson wants to allude to all of these different concepts with this mysterious and emblematic image.”

Plantation Place South

The evolution of large development sites within the City of London brings with it the challenge to maintain the City’s essential character: a variety of architectural expressions and human-scaled spaces that together create a richly textured urban fabric.

As a discreet element of the larger Planation Place site, this 10-storey building adheres to many of the design principles developed for the site as a whole, while establishing a strong identity for itself, though its massing and its use of materials.

The use of loadbearing natural stone in the perimeter wall introduces an innovative approach to the energy-led minimisation of the glazed area in office buildings. The stone structurally supports the floors and modulates sunlight penetration while also providing shading and depth to the façade.

The buildings that formerly occupied the site incorporated little-known internal routes. These linkages have been redefined within Plantation Place as an accessible sequence of internal and external spaces. The building’s entrance incorporates a north / south route that links into existing the pedestrian routes of the City.

9. Qintai art and culture centre, Wuhan, china

Arup was invited in Summer 2003 to make design proposals for the redevelopment of Qintai park in Wuhan, China.

The design remodels Qintai Park as a single programme. Arup’s interventions have a close relationship with the landscape preserving the Guqin Tai pavilion as a key element in a ring of eight features to occupy the lakeside.

These eight lakeside stations, which are the focus of early morning and evening activities, are linked by a series of winding paths which thread their way informally through a landscape enriched through newly-planted grasses, shrubs and trees.
