JIPMER Wins India Healthcare Awards 2014

JIPMER Health Education Initiative

Under the leadership of Professor Dr. SC Parija, Director, JIPMER, a new initiative

has been planned to improve public awareness on health and disease which would include a series of interactive programs conducted on a fortnightly basis. These programs will focus on building knowledge among the general public as well as patients and their care-givers on prevention and treatment of common illnesses. The programs will be in Tamil and are planned for every 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month between 3.30 and 5.00PM.

This initiative was formally launched at 3.15 PM on 26th May 2015 at Super Specialty Block Auditorium

(3rd Floor), JIPMER. The first interactive program titled “Diabetes: How can I manage it myself?” was held at the same venue after the inauguration. The second interactive session - “Hypertension (High B.P.): What do you need to know?” was held on 9th June 2015 while the 3rd interactive session focusing on Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack) and titled “Heart Attack: What do you need to know?” was held on 23rd June 2015. These programs focused on building knowledge and clear doubts among the general public, patients and their care-givers on the prevention and treatment of diseases and conditions. Around 300 participants from the general public attended the event and questions raised by the participants were clarified.

JIPMER won the India Healthcare Awards 2014 in the category Best Hospitals with Medical College–

Non Metro. The award were given by Shri Shripad Yasso Naik, Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare at a glittering function held on 8th June, New

Delhi. Dr. T. S. Ravikumar, who was the Director of JIPMER during 2014, the year for which the award was given, received the Award along with Dr. Gitanjali Batmanabane, HOD, Medical Education & Faculty Finance/Administration.

Dr. Vikram Kate, Professor of Surgery, was awarded the Membership of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of The Royal College of the Surgeons of Edinburgh (MFSTEd.) by the President of the College on April 24 2015 at Diploma Ceremony, The Royal College of the Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Honours for JIPMER Staff, Students & Faculty – Hall of Fame

Dr. Mohsina Subair IInd year Junior Resident Department of General Surgery, participated in the Torrent Young Scholar Award 2015 - South Zonal round (TYSA), conducted by the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) on 13th June 2015 at Chennai and won second prize.

Ms. Kalpana Sampath, ANS, JIPMER has been honoured with National Florence Nightingale Award on the occasion of International Nurses Day on 12th May 2015 at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi along with 35 Nursing professionals in India. This award was instituted in 1973 as a mark of recognition for the meritorious services of nurses.

Yoga for all – World Yoga Day Rally by ACYTER JIPMER

On the occasion International Yoga Day, Advanced Centre for Yoga Therapy, Education and Research

(ACYTER), JIPMER in collaboration with Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN), Ministry of AYUSH, conducted a Yoga rally for Public awareness of health benefits of yoga on 20th June 2015

(Saturday) between 6.30 – 7.30 a.m. at the beach road. Around 500 Public participated in the rally. Director Dr. SC Parija stressed the need of yoga for common man and highlighted the roll of ACYTER of JIPMER in achieving the objective of holistic health for all.

World No Tobacco Day 2015 – JIPMER calls for “Quitting Tobacco”

The Dept. of PSM, JIPMER in partnership with The Union (International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung

Disease and School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh organised the first “Workshop on Tobacco Control” for students and faculty of Public Health at NTTC Hall 1, JAC, JIPMER, Puducherry from 29th June to 3rd July 2015.

Medico-Social Services Wing, JIPMER Hospital observed World No Tobacco Day by conducting Public

Education programmes on effects of tobacco use, health related risks, effects of passive smoking, better ways to quit smoking and to adapt healthy life style. Health education pamphlets were distributed to patients, general public and staff of JIPMER. During the occasion videos on tobacco effects and health risks were played in the outpatient departments and ward sides.

Geriatric Health care – Caring for our Senior Citizens

JIPMER students pursuing Masters of Public Health course under auspices of Department of Preventive &

Social Medicine conducted an outreach programme in Ravuthankuppam village on outskirts of Puducherry. The programme was facilitated by Dr Kumaraguruparan & his colleagues working for NGO Uthavum Agam.

The program gains significance as there has been an increase in elderly population in our country. In Tamil Nadu, elderly account for 10% of total population of the state. During the initiative, 50 elderly individuals were offered medical advice.

Departments of Clinical Haematology, Haemato-pathology & Transfusion Medicine with Haemophilia Society – Puducherry

jointly organized “Pondy Haemophilia 20” to commemorate 20 years of comprehensive haemophilia care at JIPMER. Chief Minister Thiru N Rangasamy attended the function, he urged the students from Pondicherry who are studying on government aid to continue serving in the state. He also informed the gathering regarding the efforts taken by government in providing medical care to patients of Haemophilia. Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation conducted a rehabilitation camp where 200 patients were offered medical care and advice.

World Immunology Day Celebrations

World Immunology Day Celebration” was held on April 29, 2015 at JIPMER, Puducherry,

organized by the Department of Biochemistry in collaboration with the Indian Immunology Society (IIS). Dr. MG Sridhar, Senior Professor and Acting Head, Department of Biochemistry welcomed the gathering. Chief guest Dr. J Balachander, Medical Superintendent delivered the key note address. The guest of honour, Dr. S. Mahadevan, Dean (Academics) stressed on the importance of understanding immunology and thus of the World Immunology Day. This was followed by two guest lectures by Dr. Maheswaran Mani, Assistant Professor, Centre for Microbiology, Pondicherry University and Dr. K. Prashanth, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology, Pondicherry University. It was attended by postgraduate students and faculty

members of JIPMER and other medical institutions of Pondicherry.

JIPMER faculty Attending as Resource Persons in National / Regional / International Conferences / CMEs / Workshops

The Dept. of PSM, JIPMER in partnership with the Union (International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease), South East Asia Office, New Delhi and School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh organised the first “Workshop on Tobacco Control” for students and faculty of Public Health at NTTC Hall 1, JAC, JIPMER, Puducherry from 29th June to 3rd July 2015. Prof. S. C. Parija, Director JIPMER, Dr. Rana J Singh, Senior Technical Advisor, The Union, SEA Office and Dr. Gautam Roy, Professor and Head of Department, PSM, JIPMER inaugurated the workshop. Dr. Sitanshu Sekhar Kar, Assoc. Prof. of PSM, JIPMER proposed Vote of Thanks. The workshop on tobacco control was attended by 60 participants from four medical colleges in Puducherry and from State Health Department, Puducherry.

Department of Emergency Medicine & Trauma conducted:

• One day “BLS & FIRST AID TRAINING” program at hotel GRT, Chennai on 7th April 2015.

• American Heart Association (AHA) certified Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider (BLS & ACLS) course at JIPMER on 29th & 30th April and 1st May 2015.

• One day Basic Life Support (BLS) training program and certification for the intern’s batch (2014-15) on 1st May 2015.

• 2nd Indo-French Emergency Medicine CME 2015: at JIPMER from 9th – 11th May, 2015. A team of Doctors and Nurses comprising of 6 members, headed by Dr. Patrick Plaisance, Professor of Anesthesia & Emergency Medicine, Head of the Department of Emergency Medicine, Lariboisière University Hospital, Paris, France visited JIPMER during this period.

Hemat-CME 2015: organized in collaboration with the Departments of Pathology, haematology, Medicine and Medical Oncology at JIPMER on 11th and 12th April 2015.

• Dr. R Manju Assistant Professor in Pulmonary Medicine chaired session in Puducherry Chest Society update 2015 on 15th February 2015.

• Dr. Dharm Prakash Dwivedi, Assistant Professor delivered Guest Lecture on “Aerosolized antibiotics in pneumonia” in Puducherry Chest update 2015 on 15th February 2015.

• Dr. Vikram Kate, Professor of Gen Surgery, delivered a guest lecture on “The art of clinical presentation in a postgraduate examination” in the ASI South Zonal CME held at Chennai on 13th & 14th June 2015.

• Dr. Vikram Kate, Professor of Gen Surgery, moderated a session on Upper GI procedures including D 2 Gastrectomy and Heller’s Cardiomyotomy in the 08th International Conference and Live workshop in Laparoscopic Surgery, “LAPAROSURG 2015” held at Coimbatore from 14th – 16th May 2015.

• Dr. Vikram Kate, Professor of Gen Surgery, presented a paper entitled “Comparison of electrocautery incision with scalpel incision in midline abdominal surgery – a randomized trial” in the International Surgical Congress of The Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland held at Manchester, United Kingdom between 22nd and 24th April 2015.

• Dr. Vishnu Prasad, Addl Professor Gen Surgery, chaired a video session on Coloplasty in a workshop on GH GASTRO UPDATE 2015 held at Chennai.

• Dr. Ashutosh Mukherji, Assoc Professor Radiotherapy, invited as Faculty moderator in Panel discussion on “Practice changing advances in head and neck cancers” in 1st Best of ASTRO conference held at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai on 1st May 2015(International Training Event).

• Dr. Bhawana A Badhe Professor and Head of the department of Pathology chaired a session in the Hemat CME-2015 organized in collaboration with the Dept. of Medicine and Dept. of Medical Oncology at JIPMER on 11th and 12th April 2015.

• Dr. Surendra Kumar Verma Professor of Pathology chaired a session on “Glomerular Diseases (IgA Nephropathy) at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi on 10th October, 2015.

• Dr. N. Siddaraju, Professor of Pathology chaired a session on “Central nervous system tumours” in the CME in Pathology held at Sri Venkateshwaraa Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Puducherry on 29th June 2015.

• Dr. Debadatta Basu Professor of Pathology was a part of the organizing team of Hemat CME-2015 held on 11th and 12th April 2015 at JIPMER Puducherry; delivered a talk on “Diagnostic Dilemma in Hodgkin Lymphoma”.

• Dr. Debadatta Basu Professor of Pathology delivered three guest lectures on topics entitled (i) Lymphoma

• Dr. Debadatta Basu Professor of Pathology a guest faculty in the 5th Basic Hematopathology Course held at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai on 26th and 27th June 2015; spoke on “Morphology of Peripheral Blood Smear”.

• Dr. Rakhee Kar, Associate Professor was a part of organizing team and chaired a session in Hemat CME 2015 held on 11th and 12th April 2015 at JIPMER Puducherry.

• Dr. Rakhee Kar, Associate Professor was a guest faculty, and delivered a guest lecture on ‘Myelofibrosis-Diagnosis and Prognosis” in the Alumni meet and National Hematology Update –X organized by AIIMS New Delhi from 1st-3rd April 2015.

• Dr. Rajesh NG, Associate Professor of Pathology delivered a guest lecture on “Infection related glomerulonephritis: changing trends” at Xth Annual Conference of Indian Society of Renal and Transplantation Pathology and International CME in Renal Pathology held at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi from 10-12th,July 2015. In the conference, he co-authored two posters titled “IgA dominant Post infectious glomerulonephritis - a single centre experience” and “Spectrum of Nephrotic syndrome in pediatric and adult population in a tertiary care centre in South India”. He also officiated as Secretary of the Indian Society of Renal and Transplant Pathology and conducted the Executive and General Body meetings during

the Conference and CME. • Dr. Rajesh NG, Associate Professor of Pathology

delivered a guest lecture on “Recent advances in diagnosis of Soft tissue tumors” in a CME on Kaleidoscope of Pathology held at Department of Pathology, Chengalpattu Medical College, Chengalpattu, on 12th and 13th of June 2015.

• Dr. BH Srinivas, Assistant Professor of Pathology chaired a session at Hemat CME-2015 on “Multiple myeloma: Recent updates in diagnosis and management”.

• Mrs. M. J. Kumari, Vice-Principal (Ag. Principal, College of Nursing JIPMER) invited as a Resource person to deliver a talk on “Team Preceptorship – A new approach for Novice Nurses” at Pauls College of Nursing, Vanur, Villupuram district on 8th April 2015.

• Mrs. D. Vetriselvi, Lecturer, College of Nursing was invited as a Resource person for workshop on “Essential Newborn & Neonatal resuscitation” held at JIPMER.

• Mrs. D. Vetriselvi, Lecturer, College of Nursing was invited as a Resource person for two tuberculosis workshops under GFATM held at JIPMER.

• Mrs. K. Kanimozhi, Sister Tutor, College of Nursing, presented paper on Recent health services available in maternal health on 30.04.2015 in 5th National conference on “Recent updates in National Health services” at Kasturba Gandhi College of Nursing.

• Mr. B. Janarthanan, Clinical Instructor, College of Nursing, participated in the National conference on “Eminent liabilities in Critical care unit” as a resource person and delivered an oration on “Monitoring of equipments in ICU/CCU” at Shanmuga College of Nursing, Salem, Tamil Nadu on 28th April 2015.

• Dr. Frank Bellivier, Director and Head of Psychiatry, University hospitals St. Louis, Lariboisière, Paris delivered a guest lecture on topic "Biomarkers of response to lithium" on 11th May 2015.

• Faculty from Global Academy of Emergency Medicine (GAEM) visited EM & Trauma Department, JIPMER as part of exchange training programme.

• Dr. Benjamin Chidester, International EM fellow from Eastern Virginia Medical School, USA visited JIPMER from 04-04-2015 to 10-04-2015. Skill: ED mock resuscitation and ultrasound training.

• Dr. Benjamin D’Souza, Paediatric Emergency Physician, Women's and Children's Hospital, Adelaide, Australia visited JIPMER from 19-04-2015 to 24-04-2015. Module: Paediatric Emergencies.

• Dr. Naren Gunja– Professor, Paediatric Toxicology, Sydney Children’s Hospital, Australia was the Resource Person for the Paediatric toxicology work shop on 24-04-2015 at JIPMER.

New Services Added by JIPMER and Augmentation of Existing Services

Inauguration of Immunotherapy UnitThe Immunotherapy unit of the Department of Clinical Immunology was inaugurated by Dr (Prof ) Subhash Chandra Parija, Director, JIPMER on 6th May 2015. This facility, the first of its kind in the country will treat patients with autoimmune and immunological disorders through stem cell therapy.

Dr. Philippe ARHETS, Counselor for Science and Technology, French embassy in India, New Delhi was the guest of honor for the function.

Augmentation of services in Emergency Medicine and Surgery

• Trauma-OT and Recovery Room was commissioned from 30th June 2015. This OT is meant exclusively for Emergency Surgeries of Trauma patients attending JIPMER EM & Trauma Department.

• 11 Bedded step down High Dependency Unit (HDU) was started functioning from 13/7/2015 in the 1st floor of EMS Block for continuation of Treatment

after initial Resuscitation and management. It was provided with 5 high end ventilators, Multi-para monitors and infusion pumps, Defibrillator etc.

• 36 Multi-para Monitors, 13 high-end Ventilators, 3 defibrillators, Infusion pumps were installed at various locations in the EMS Block for utility.

Inauguration of Special Pharmacy Counters in SSB

Dr. S. C. Parija, Director had inaugurated the Special Pharmacy Counters in the Super Specialty Block (SSB) of JIPMER for senior citizens and women patients, on 5th May, 2015.

JSS Guest Lecture: On 11th of May 2015, Frank Bellivier, Director and Head of Psychiatry, University hospitals St. Louis, Lariboisière, Paris delivered a guest lecture on “Biomarkers of response to lithium”.
